Chapter 12 - The Verdict of Steel-12

Later that afternoon, after the guests had departed and the sun began its slow descent toward the horizon, Marcus Pendelton joined Daniel, Julianna, and me on the wide wooden porch overlooking the valley.
Marcus carried a thick, black leather binder containing the final, un-appealable court decrees issued by the Federal District Court in Portland earlier that morning.
"The criminal proceedings for Arthur, Eleanor, and Harrison Vance have officially concluded," Marcus announced, sliding the certified judicial documents across the cedar table.
"What were the final sentences, Marcus?" Julianna asked quietly, taking a slow sip of her tea.
"Dr. Harrison Vance," Marcus reported flatly, "was convicted on all fourteen federal counts, including Human Trafficking, Falsification of State Medical Records, Wire Fraud, and Unlawful Confinement. He has been sentenced to THIRTY-FIVE YEARS at the Federal Correctional Institution in Florence, Colorado, without the possibility of parole."
He turned a page on the decree.
"Your father, Arthur Sterling, was sentenced to EIGHTEEN YEARS in federal custody for his active role in corporate fraud, perjury, and child endangerment. Your mother, Eleanor, received an EIGHT-YEAR sentence for accomplice conspiracy, with her personal assets fully liquidated to satisfy the civil restitution judgments awarded to Lily and Julianna."
And Madison?" I asked, keeping my tone razor-sharp.
"Madison’s marketing firm was permanently dissolved under civil forfeiture," Marcus added with a grim smile. "Her professional license was revoked by the state board, and she has been ordered to perform two thousand hours of mandatory community service while serving five years of supervised federal probation. She is legally barred from ever coming within five miles of Lily or Julianna."
My phone chimed on the table—a brief, automated notification from the Federal Bureau of Prisons inmate registry:
Status Update: Inmates #884192 (Harrison Vance) & #884193 (Arthur Sterling). Security Level: Maximum. Status: Confinement Active / All Visitation Rights Permanently Terminated by Judicial Order.
I looked at the notification for three seconds.

I felt no rush of vengeful triumph. I felt no lingering anger, no bitterness, and no phantom pain. The monsters who had tried to destroy my sister, steal my daughter, and crush my life were locked behind concrete and steel, forever stripped of their titles, their wealth, and their power over our world.
I swiped the notification away, locked the screen, and placed the phone face-down on the table forever.
