Chapter 10 - The Unbroken Chain-10

The afternoon light softened into a deep, golden amber as the sun began its slow descent toward the western horizon of the Pacific.

Inside the coastal cottage, the wood stove threw a warm, flickering glow across the pine floorboards. Lily was sitting on a plush sheepskin rug near the hearth, completely absorbed in showing Julianna her drawing book, pointing out her colorful renditions of sea turtles, yellow rainboots, and her ragged blue bunny.

Julianna sat beside her on the floor, her hands trembling slightly as she helped Lily select colored pencils, her eyes shining with a profound, quiet reverence every time she looked at her daughter’s face.

Daniel, Marcus, and I sat at the rustic timber kitchen table nearby, drinking warm cider, watching the two of them together.

"I surrendered her at the safe-haven station in Eugene three days after she was born," Julianna explained softly, her voice dropping into a somber, reflective register as she kept her gaze fixed on Lily. "I was living in a battered women's shelter under a fake name, terrified every time a black SUV drove down the street. I knew that if Harrison's operatives found me while I had a newborn, they would take her from me and use her as leverage to keep me silent forever."

"So you gave her up to protect her," I said, reaching across the table to squeeze Daniel's hand.

"I placed her in the safe-surrender box at the fire station with a note written on Grandma's stationery," Julianna murmured, a soft, tearful smile touching her lips. "I prayed every single night that she would be placed with a good family—a family that would love her, protect her, and give her the life I couldn't."

She looked up at me, her brown eyes filled with an overwhelming, transcendent gratitude.

"When I found out six months ago that you had adopted her, Emily... I sat on this cliff and wept for three days. I knew then that God hadn't forgotten us. I knew she was safe because she was with the bravest woman I’ve ever known."

A soft, emotional sob escaped my throat. I stood up from the table, walked over to the rug, and knelt beside Julianna and Lily, wrapping my arms around both of them. Lily giggled happily, sandwiching herself between her mother and her aunt, her small arms reaching up to hug us both.

"We're a family now, Jules," I whispered into my sister's hair. "A real family. And no one is ever going to hide us, control us, or separate us again."
