Chapter 5 - THE MIDNIGHT BOARDROOM

-1-
The executive boardroom on the top floor of Prescott Technologies’ downtown Denver tower was a masterpiece of intimidation. Designed to project absolute, untouchable power, the room featured a massive twenty-seat table carved from a single slab of black obsidian, surrounded by floor-to-ceiling glass windows that offered a dizzying, panoramic view of the snowy city skyline far below.
It was 11:45 PM on Christmas Eve.
Fifteen of the most powerful investors, venture capitalists, and tech executives in the country sat in absolute silence around the obsidian table, their faces illuminated only by the harsh, blue glow of their digital tablets. At the head of the table sat Marcus Vance, wearing an immaculate charcoal suit, looking every bit the ruthless corporate czar. He casually checked his Rolex, a subtle twitch of annoyance marring his otherwise polished facade.
"Fifteen minutes until midnight," Marcus announced, his voice echoing off the vaulted glass ceiling. "If Mr. Prescott does not arrive to execute the final signature, the Merritt Systems acquisition defaults to Calder’s group, and our nine-month investment vanishes into thin air."
"Where is Damon?" asked Arthur Sterling, the lead venture partner holding fifty percent of the voting shares. "He has never missed a critical closing in the history of this firm. Something is wrong."
Before Marcus could formulate a reassuring lie, the heavy double doors of the boardroom swung open with a sharp, echoing bang.
Every head at the table snapped toward the entrance.
I walked into the boardroom, my stride long, deliberate, and unhurried. I wasn't wearing my usual formal overcoat; I wore a simple, dark tailored shirt with the sleeves rolled up to my forearms, carrying a heavy, encrypted tactical hard drive in my left hand.
Trailing right behind me, walking with absolute, unyielding poise, was Cassandra Hayes.
The entire boardroom erupted into stunned, confused murmurs. Investors blinked in disbelief, whispering frantically among themselves. Marcus Vance’s face went completely, catastrophically pale. The color drained from his skin so fast he looked like a corpse under the fluorescent lights.
"Damon..." Marcus stammered, standing up slowly from his chair, his hands gripping the edge of the obsidian table. "What... what is the meaning of this? Who is this woman? Security must have lost their minds letting unauthorized visitors onto the executive floor!"
I didn't answer him immediately. I walked down the length of the massive table, my eyes locked dead on Marcus’s terrified expression. I stopped three seats away from him, gently placing the heavy encrypted hard drive right in the center of the obsidian surface.
"Sit down, Marcus," I said, my voice dropping into a low, razor-sharp baritone that made the air in the room feel instantly ten degrees colder.
Marcus hesitated, his knees visibly trembling beneath the table. He forced a strained, nervous laugh. "Damon, you're exhausted. You missed the flight from Oregon, you're jet-lagged, let's reschedule the signature for—"
"I said, sit down," I roared, slamming my palm against the obsidian table with a concussive crack that rattled the crystal water pitchers.
Marcus dropped back into his leather chair as if he had been struck by lightning.
I turned my attention to the assembled board members, letting my gaze sweep over each of their faces. "Gentlemen. Before we execute a $780 million acquisition with Merritt Systems, there is a small administrative oversight we need to clear up regarding the internal security of Prescott Technologies."
Arthur Sterling frowned, leaning forward. "What oversight, Damon? We have twelve minutes before the midnight deadline."
"An oversight involving embezzlement, corporate espionage, and unauthorized human experimentation with chemical sedatives," I said smoothly.
I reached out, tapped the master control panel on the wall, and mirrored my subterranean bunker's forensic terminal directly onto the four massive LED screens lining the boardroom walls.
Instantly, the horrifying digital contents of Marcus Vance’s secret files exploded across the room:
The forged parental relinquishment waivers.
The internal emails detailing Operation Cradle Cleanse.
The multi-million-dollar wire transfers siphoning company funds into Marcus’s offshore Swiss bank accounts.
The entire boardroom gasped in unison. Several investors dropped their tablets in shock, staring up at the giant screens in absolute horror.
Arthur Sterling turned an alarming shade of purple, pointing a shaking finger at Marcus. "My God... Marcus, you embezzled from the operating reserves? You forged legal documents using the CEO’s signature?!"
Marcus sat frozen in his chair, staring up at his exposed crimes on the screen. The polished, untouchable corporate lawyer had completely disintegrated, leaving behind a cornered, sweating criminal.
"Damon... please," Marcus choked out, his voice cracking as he looked up at me with desperate, pleading eyes. "I did it for the company! I did it to protect your focus! You were building an empire, and a family would have ruined everything!"
I walked slowly around the table, stopping right beside his chair. I leaned down until my face was inches from his.
"You didn't protect my focus, Marcus," I whispered, every word dripping with a lethal, concentrated fury. "You stole my life. You stole my children's first years. And for that... I'm going to take everything you've ever built."
I straightened up, turning to the board members. "The $780 million acquisition of Merritt Systems is hereby approved, executed, and signed under my direct authority as sole majority shareholder. But our very first corporate resolution as a newly restructured entity is the immediate, unceremonious termination of Marcus Vance, followed by a referral to the Department of Justice for federal racketeering charges."
Arthur Sterling swallowed hard, nodding rapidly. "Approved. Motion carried unanimously."
"Get him out of my sight," I instructed the two security guards standing by the doorway.
They didn't wait. They marched across the boardroom, grabbed Marcus by the shoulders, and hauled him out of his chair as he thrashed and screamed, dragging him out of the room in absolute disgrace.
When the heavy double doors slammed shut behind him, a profound, heavy silence settled over the boardroom.
I turned back to Cassandra, who was standing near the entrance, holding little Violet while Luke clutched her hand. The board members turned their heads, staring at them with newfound, reverent understanding.

I walked over to my family, wrapped my arm securely around Cassandra’s waist, and pulled them close against my side.
"Gentlemen," I announced to the stunned board members, a brilliant, genuine smile breaking across my face. "The acquisition is finished. Now, if you'll excuse me... I have a family to take home for Christmas."
