Chapter 10 - THE ARCHITECT’S VOW

-1-

The trial of Arthur Sterling was the fastest white-collar prosecution in Colorado judicial history. Armed with the unassailable digital evidence we had secured in the master bunker, federal prosecutors dismantled his empire in less than three weeks. Sterling was sentenced to consecutive life terms without the possibility of parole, his assets seized and repurposed into a federal restitution fund for the families affected by his illegal trials.

By early summer, the mountains surrounding our estate were blanketed in lush green pines and vibrant wildflowers.

Inside the vaulted living room, the atmosphere was a masterclass in domestic tranquility. Luke and preschool-aged Violet were busy building an elaborate Lego castle on the Persian rug, while Cassandra and I sat by the open picture windows, sipping coffee in the warm morning sun.

My phone buzzed on the coffee table.

I picked it up, glancing at an email notification from the executive board of Prescott Technologies. They had unanimously voted to ratify my new corporate charter—a groundbreaking charter that permanently enshrined worker protections, strict ethical compliance boards, and absolute transparency as foundational pillars of the company.

I locked the screen and set the phone face down, never wanting it to dictate my attention again.

Cassandra noticed, offering a warm, knowing smile. "Everything alright at the office?"

"The office is running itself," I replied, wrapping my arm around her shoulders and pulling her close. "My chief executive officer is a competent man named Greg, and my board of directors finally understands that family comes before balance sheets."

She laughed, resting her head against my chest. "You really changed, Damon. The old you would have been micromanaging every single line item from a laptop on the beach."

"The old me was running away from ghosts," I said softly, looking down at her, then across the room at our children playing happily on the rug. "I spent my whole life building walls out of ambition because I thought love wasn't enough to keep a family safe. But I was wrong. Love is the only foundation that can't be shaken."

Luke suddenly scrambled up onto the sofa, holding up a crooked Lego tower. "Daddy, look! I built the tallest tower in the world!"

I scooped him up into my arms, tickling his ribs until he giggled uncontrollably, while Violet ran over to join the pile.

Looking out at the vast, open horizon stretching across the Colorado Rockies, I knew that the empire I had built was finally complete. Not because of the billions of dollars in the bank, or the corporate towers downtown, but because of the two little pairs of gray eyes looking up at me with absolute, unconditional love.

The storm had passed. The past had been redeemed. And our family was finally anchored in an eternity of peace.
