Chapter 10 - THE MONEY DANIEL HID FROM EVERYONE

10

Six years after sentencing, investigators found another account.

Not because new crime.

Because restitution asset search continued.

$612,000 in a Wyoming trust.

Beneficiary:

Daniel.

Funded before Riverstone collapse.

He had hidden money from everyone.

Prosecutors moved seize.

His attorney argued legitimate inheritance.

Records said transfers from D.H. Strategic and Laurel House.

Fraud proceeds.

Seized.

Why did this matter to me?

Because he told investors project failed because “everything was tied up.”

He told Theresa every dollar went to save project.

He told Lauren no money left.

He told me bonus needed because he had risked everything.

He hadn’t.

He had protected $612,000 for himself.

Everyone else collateral.

That ended last trace of his “desperate family savior” story.

He wasn’t merely drowning and grabbing.

He hid life raft.

Theresa took hard.

“He let me lose house while he had that?”

“Yes.”

“He could have paid first mortgage.”

“Some.”

She became angry in new way.

For years she still mothered internally:

He panicked.

He got in over head.

This account showed calculated self-preservation.

She stopped visiting prison for months.

Daniel wrote apology.

She didn’t answer.

Eventually resumed limited because he was son.

Choice.

I understood.

Then Robert found personal archive from my payments.

My total support to Hayes family:

$376,421 over three and a half years.

Not $318k due additional.

Seeing number stunned.

What could I have done?

Retirement.

Travel.

Investments.

But regret dangerous.

I had chosen based false information partly.

Can I seek restitution?

Some payments induced by fraud maybe.

Lawyers included claims.

I recovered approximately $142,000 through forfeiture settlement tied direct misrepresentations.

Not all.

Utilities genuinely consumed.

Mortgage partly housing Theresa.

Card bills maybe Daniel.

I accepted.

Money lost.

Lesson not to obsess.

I created “no invisible support” rule personally.

Any future gift explicit.

No recurring autopay for another capable adult unless transparent and reviewed annually.

I shared with friends.

One laughed:

“You have family aid policy.”

“Yes.”

Better than chaos.

Theresa adopted budget.

At 68? maybe early 70s. She managed.

Aaron helped sometimes.

Direct.

No secrets.

Lauren rebuilt? She moved away eventually.

She sent one final letter:

Mariana,

I used to think you were cold because you never performed generosity.

Interesting.

Now I know I confused performance with truth.

She apologized.

I did not answer.

No need.

Daniel’s prison letters improved.

One:

I used to think if project succeeded, methods would become justified retroactively.

That was insight.

Success doesn’t sanitize fraud.

Another:

The dinner receipt is in discovery. I saw it. You paid for meal where Mom left you empty plate.

He wrote:

I don’t know whether to laugh or be ashamed.

I answered first personal line in years:

Be ashamed first. Laugh later.

He replied:

Fair.

Strange humor.

Did forgiveness start?

Maybe softening.

Not trust.

No relationship.

Then a health event.

Theresa fell.

Hip fracture.

Hospital.

She called Aaron first.

He came.

Then me, not for money.

“Can you feed cat?”

I laughed.

“Yes.”

Boundary success.

I fed cat.

Visited.

She said:

“I’m scared.”

I held hand.

No debt.

Care freely chosen.

After rehab, she moved smaller ground-floor unit.

Sold some jewelry.

Fine.

One necklace expensive, given by Daniel during “successful” years.

She sold and donated part to investor restitution fund voluntarily.

I said not necessary.

She said:

“I wore proof of money that wasn’t real.”

Her choice.

Growth.

Aaron remarried eventually? Maybe no need.

I dated.

A man named Victor? Avoid old names. Michael Reed? Let's call Jonah.

I met Jonah Pierce at nonprofit board event.

Divorced.

Teacher turned museum administrator.

First time he asked:

“Who pays utilities?”

I laughed so hard he looked confused.

I explained later.

We dated slowly.

When he offered to cover dinner, I said we can alternate.

He didn’t care.

When I said no, he didn’t punish.

That felt more romantic than flowers.

I did not remarry quickly.

Maybe never.

We eventually moved? I kept condo; he had place. We maintained.

Healthy adult love did not require merging every account.

He said:

“Separate finances are boring.”

“Boring is sexy.”

He laughed.

Years after, Daniel became eligible for early transfer to halfway house? Federal 11-year, maybe after 9 with good conduct. He served about 9.5. He requested no contact with me.

Theresa asked if she could attend release.

“Yes. Your choice.”

“Will you?”

“No.”

“Okay.”

No guilt.

Daniel left prison without company, wife, house, hidden trust.

He had restitution balance.

Work restrictions.

His brother distant.

Mother cautious.

Life.

He took warehouse operations job eventually.

Ordinary.

One day he emailed:

I will never ask you for money.

I smiled.

Good baseline.

Then:

I owe you more apology than repayment can cover.

True.

I replied:

Live differently.

He wrote:

May you like

Trying.

Enough.
