Chapter 9 - THE FATHER WHO WANTED EVERYTHING EXPOSED

9
Victor did not believe Samuel.
Not at first.
“My father wouldn't shoot at Grace.”
Samuel looked at him.
“Gabriel wasn't aiming for Grace.”
“Then Matteo.”
“Yes.”
Victor's expression changed.
“Why?”
“Because Matteo sold Lucia's location to Antonio. Gabriel never forgave him.”
Grace looked at Samuel.
“You're telling me Gabriel has spent twenty-three years waiting to kill Matteo?”
“No.”
“Then what changed?”
“The registry came back into play.”
Gabriel had disappeared shortly after helping Samuel stage his death.
At first, they worked together.
Both wanted Shepherd destroyed.
But they disagreed about how.
Samuel believed victims' identities had to remain protected.
Gabriel wanted everything made public.
Every name.
Every official.
Every protected criminal.
Every fabricated family.
“He said secrecy created Shepherd,” Samuel explained. “So secrecy couldn't destroy it.”
“That sounds almost reasonable,” Grace said.
“It did at first.”
“What changed?”
“His wife.”
Victor went still.
“My mother?”
Victor's mother Elena died when he was twenty.
Car accident.
Again.
Samuel looked at him carefully.
“She didn't die.”
Victor's chair scraped backward.
Grace closed her eyes.
Another ghost.
Samuel explained.
Elena Reyes entered Shepherd voluntarily after Gabriel disappeared.
Not because she was hiding from Moretti.
Because she was hiding from Gabriel.
Victor stared.
“That is a lie.”
“She found out Gabriel had killed someone.”
“Who?”
“A federal clerk.”
The clerk helped Vale create false documents.
Gabriel believed killing him would cripple the system.
It didn't.
Elena realized Gabriel was becoming what he hated.
She took a new identity.
Left Victor with relatives because she believed Gabriel would eventually find her if Victor came too.
Victor's face twisted.
“She abandoned me.”
Samuel didn't soften it.
“Yes.”
Grace respected that.
Protection could coexist with abandonment.
They had all learned that.
“Is she alive?”
Samuel nodded.
Victor sat.
“Where?”
“I can't tell you without her permission.”
Victor's eyes filled with rage.
“You don't get to decide that.”
“No.”
Samuel took out a phone.
“But she does.”
He dialed.
Put it on speaker.
A woman answered.
“Samuel?”
Victor stopped breathing.
Samuel said:
“Elena, he's here.”
Silence.
Then a sob.
“Victor?”
Victor couldn't speak.
Grace looked away.
Some reunions did not belong to an audience.
Afterward, Victor walked alone for almost an hour.
When he returned, something in him had changed.
Not healed.
Clarified.
“My father is alive.”
Samuel nodded.
“And he's trying to release everything.”
“Yes.”
“Why now?”
“Because Vale started killing survivors. Gabriel thinks the only protection left is total exposure.”
Grace understood the terrible logic.
If every secret became public, Vale couldn't quietly hunt people anymore.
But hundreds of innocent people would lose new identities.
Children might discover their parents had been criminals.
Abuse survivors could be located.
Witnesses could be killed by old enemies.
There was no clean solution.
Luca spread the registry categories across the library table.
“We can separate evidence.”
Samuel nodded.
“That's what I've been doing.”
“Then Gabriel doesn't know?”
“He thinks I became cowardly.”
“Have you?”
Samuel looked at Grace.
“Sometimes.”
She appreciated that too.
No heroic speeches.
No clean men.
They formed a plan.
Three independent prosecutorial teams.
Encrypted copies.
Protected victim identities redacted.
Criminal records released.
A court-supervised process for the complicated cases.
Conrad Vale would be arrested only after evidence moved outside his influence.
Gabriel had to be stopped from triggering full public release.
“How?” Victor asked.
Samuel looked toward Titan.
“He needs Lucia's encryption key.”
“The chip.”
“Yes.”
“And Titan is here.”
“Yes.”
“So Gabriel will come.”
Samuel nodded.
“He already has.”
Everyone turned.
Samuel pointed toward the estate security map.
“There are six dogs.”
“Yes,” Victor said.
“There should be seven.”
Grace remembered the hidden room.
Six puppy files plus Titan?
No.
Samuel explained.
Titan had fathered six dogs.
Only five currently remained at the estate.
The sixth, Nero, disappeared six months ago during a veterinary transfer.
Victor believed someone stole him for ransom.
Gabriel took him.
“Why?”
“Each dog carried part of Lucia's old access system.”
Luca frowned.
“You said Titan carried the key.”
“The primary key.”
“And Nero?”
“Emergency override.”
Gabriel already had half of what he needed.
That was why the shooter burned the kennel.
Not to destroy records.
To force them to retrieve Titan's key.
Gabriel was watching.
Grace felt exposed again.
“Then he knows we scanned Titan.”
“Probably.”
The estate lost power at 9:18 p.m.
Backup generators failed seven seconds later.
Victor swore.
“Internal sabotage.”
Security shutters began closing.
Then stopped halfway.
The dogs started barking.
Not random.
One after another.
A pattern.
Samuel stood.
“He's here.”
Grace's heart accelerated.
“How?”
“Tunnels.”
The Moretti estate had old service tunnels connecting kennels, garage, and former wine storage.
Antonio built them decades earlier.
Gabriel designed the security system.
He knew every blind spot.
Victor handed Grace a flashlight.
“Stay with Luca.”
“No.”
“Grace.”
“My father just reappeared after twelve years. I'm not spending tonight locked in a bedroom.”
Samuel almost smiled.
“That's my girl.”
Grace looked at him.
“You don't get to use that yet.”
“Fair.”
They moved toward the underground passage.
Titan led.
Halfway down, another dog barked from darkness.
Titan froze.
A black mastiff emerged.
Older than the others.
Scarred ear.
Nero.
Behind him stood Gabriel Reyes.
Sixty-seven.
Gray hair.
Gun lowered at his side.
Victor stopped.
“Dad.”
Gabriel looked at his son.
For the first time, the hard man Samuel described disappeared.
“Victor.”
Then his eyes moved toward Grace.
“Lucia's girl.”
Grace hated being called that by strangers.
“You shot Matteo.”
“Yes.”
“You burned the kennel.”
“Yes.”
“You tried to use me.”
Gabriel almost smiled.
“You sound like Samuel.”
Samuel stepped forward.
“This ends tonight.”
Gabriel looked at him.
“It should have ended twelve years ago.”
“We weren't ready.”
“You were scared.”
“Yes.”
That honesty irritated Gabriel more than denial would.
“You protected criminals.”
“I protected children.”
“You protected secrets.”
“Some secrets keep victims alive.”
Gabriel's voice rose.
“And some keep men like Vale powerful.”
Victor moved closer.
“Put the gun down.”
Gabriel looked at his son.
“Your mother called you.”
“Yes.”
“She filled your head.”
“She told me the truth.”
“She abandoned you.”
Victor flinched.
Grace saw Samuel almost intervene.
She stopped him.
Victor needed this moment.
“You abandoned me first.”
Gabriel's face broke.
“I was protecting you.”
Victor laughed bitterly.
“Everybody's favorite excuse.”
Grace looked at Samuel.
He looked away.
Gabriel raised a small device.
“Give me Titan's chip key.”
“No,” Samuel said.
“I'll release what I have anyway.”
“You'll expose hundreds of victims.”
“They deserve truth.”
“You don't get to decide what truth costs them.”
Gabriel's expression hardened.
“Neither did Lucia.”
He pressed a button.
Screens throughout the tunnel flickered.
A countdown appeared.
30:00.
Twenty-nine fifty-nine.
“What is that?” Luca demanded.
Gabriel looked at Grace.
“In thirty minutes, every Shepherd file I possess goes public.”
Samuel's face drained.
“How much?”
“Enough.”
Grace stared at the countdown.
“How do we stop it?”
Gabriel held out his hand.
“Give me Titan's key.”
Samuel shook his head.
“You'll complete the archive.”
“Yes.”
“And release everything.”
“Yes.”
Grace stepped forward.
“What if I give you something else?”
Everyone looked at her.
Gabriel frowned.
“What?”
“The person you actually want.”
Grace had finally understood him.
Gabriel did not want files.
He wanted Conrad Vale.
Grace said:
“Help us take Vale alive, and I'll make sure the guilty names come out.”
Gabriel stared.
“You promise to expose Moretti too?”
Grace looked at Luca.
Luca answered for himself.
“Yes.”
No hesitation.
“My father. My companies. Me, if necessary.”
Gabriel studied them.
The countdown reached twenty-eight minutes.
Then he lowered the device.
“One condition.”
Grace waited.
“No private family justice.”
Luca frowned.
Gabriel looked at him.
“Vale goes into a courtroom.”
Grace nodded.
“Agreed.”
Gabriel entered the shutdown code.
The countdown stopped at 27:14.
Samuel exhaled.
Victor didn't.
He stared at his father.
“You don't get to disappear again.”
Gabriel looked at him.
“I know.”
Victor's jaw tightened.
“No. You don't.”
For once, a father had no answer.
Then Gabriel looked toward Titan.
“Vale has one move left.”
“What?”
“He knows Samuel is dying.”
Grace's chest tightened.
Gabriel continued.
“He knows you'll rush.”
Samuel's face hardened.
“So?”
Gabriel looked at Grace.
“He won't come for the registry.”
“Then what?”
“He'll come for the only witness who can put him in Lucia's kitchen.”
Grace.
May you like
And this time, Vale no longer needed her dead.
He needed her memory discredited forever.
