Chapter 5 - THE NAME HER FATHER NEVER SPOKE

5
Matteo survived.
Barely.
The bullet entered below his collarbone and missed the artery by less than an inch.
He was transported under Moretti security to a private surgical center.
Grace wanted to go.
Luca refused.
“You're the target.”
“You don't know that.”
“The first shot hit exactly where you were standing before Victor moved you.”
Grace stopped arguing.
Victor had saved her life.
That complicated the suspicion beginning to form around him.
The shooter escaped.
A rifle was found two miles away.
No prints.
No serial number.
Professional.
Victor doubled security.
Nobody entered or left the estate without Luca's approval.
Grace sat in the kitchen at two in the morning with Titan beneath the table.
She had spent her first day expecting to cook for criminals.
Instead she learned her mother had been poisoned, her father might be alive, her legal identity concealed ownership in a criminal empire, and someone was trying to kill her before she learned why.
She made tea.
It felt like rebellion.
Luca entered.
“You cook when you're frightened?”
“I boil water.”
“Less impressive.”
“I'm saving the soufflé for assassination attempt number two.”
He sat across from her.
For several seconds neither spoke.
Then Grace asked:
“Who helped Samuel disappear?”
Luca knew the answer.
She saw it.
“Say it.”
“Gabriel Reyes.”
Victor's father.
Grace looked toward the hall.
“You knew.”
“I suspected.”
“Victor?”
“I don't know.”
“There it is again.”
Luca rubbed his face.
“Gabriel was my father's security chief. If anyone could create a false death and move Samuel without being detected, it was him.”
“And Samuel wrote that Gabriel wanted out.”
“Yes.”
“Matteo said the man who helped Samuel disappear poisoned my mother.”
“He may have been trying to say Gabriel.”
“Or someone else.”
Luca nodded.
Grace studied him.
“Tell me about Gabriel.”
Gabriel Reyes had served Antonio Moretti for eighteen years.
Driver first.
Then guard.
Then chief of security.
He knew every safe house.
Every corrupt officer.
Every Shepherd route.
When Lucia decided to run, Gabriel was ordered to retrieve her.
Instead, he lied about finding her.
Later, after Matteo revealed Lucia's Albany location, Gabriel warned Samuel.
Apparently too late.
Helen Walker died.
Samuel understood Moretti operatives had found them.
Within months, Samuel staged his own death.
Gabriel helped.
“And disappeared,” Grace said.
“Yes.”
“Where?”
“No confirmed record after 2015.”
Grace looked toward Titan.
“Victor said his father abandoned him.”
“He believed that.”
“Did you?”
“I believed Gabriel was dead.”
“Everyone around you dies without bodies.”
Luca almost smiled.
“I'm aware of the pattern.”
The next morning Victor joined them in the library.
Grace placed Gabriel's photograph on the table.
“Did your father know Samuel Walker?”
Victor stared at it.
“I didn't know until yesterday.”
“Luca thinks Gabriel helped Samuel fake his death.”
Victor's expression changed.
“What?”
“Matteo said the person who helped Samuel disappear was connected to my mother's poisoning.”
Victor stood.
“You think my father killed Lucia?”
“I think I need facts.”
“My father was not a murderer.”
“You work for the Morettis.”
“So did Samuel.”
That landed.
Grace looked at him.
Victor immediately regretted it.
“I'm sorry.”
“No. You're right.”
Her father was not a simple innocent outsider anymore.
Samuel lied.
Used false identities.
Worked with organized criminals.
Moved evidence.
Staged his death.
Maybe moved money.
Grace needed to stop treating him as the man from her childhood workshop.
That version of Samuel might not have survived twelve years underground.
Victor looked at Luca.
“Do you have anything from my father?”
Luca opened the hidden-room inventory.
One file was marked GR.
Gabriel Reyes.
Inside they found copies of old security rosters.
A letter.
And a photograph.
Victor opened the letter.
His father's handwriting.
Victor,
If you ever learn what I did, you'll hate me before you understand me.
Victor stopped.
Grace knew that feeling too well.
Gabriel wrote that Antonio ordered Lucia located.
Gabriel delayed.
Matteo betrayed her location.
Then someone else arrived in Albany before Antonio's men.
A federal marshal.
Conrad Vale.
Grace frowned.
“Who is that?”
Luca's face changed.
Victor continued reading.
Vale ran a federal witness relocation unit in the Northeast.
Lucia originally intended to give him the Shepherd registry.
Instead, Vale betrayed her.
He was the federal official Samuel's recording called compromised.
Vale wanted the registry for himself.
Not to expose Shepherd.
To control it.
Antonio Moretti created the criminal half.
Conrad Vale provided legal identities, official death certificates, sealed records, and access to government databases.
Together, they could make people disappear completely.
Grace looked sick.
“Vale poisoned my mother?”
Victor read further.
Gabriel believed so.
Helen became ill after meeting a man who claimed he could finally place the family in federal protection.
Three days later she collapsed.
Official diagnosis: aneurysm.
Samuel later discovered her blood had contained traces of a substance that could trigger catastrophic bleeding but was not tested during the emergency.
“Samuel had blood results?”
Luca asked.
Victor nodded.
“He secretly had a stored sample tested.”
Grace stared.
“My father knew Mom was murdered.”
“Yes.”
“And he never told me.”
“He may have been trying to keep you alive.”
Grace stood.
“Everybody keeps saying that as though it makes lying painless.”
Nobody answered.
Gabriel's letter continued.
After Lucia died, Samuel wanted revenge.
Gabriel stopped him.
They realized killing Vale would expose Grace.
Instead they gathered evidence.
They planned to destroy Shepherd from inside.
Samuel staged his death.
Gabriel disappeared.
For years they worked separately.
Then came the final lines.
Victor's voice broke as he read them.
If I fail, tell my son I did not leave because I wanted another life.
I left because the life I had was coming for him.
Victor lowered the paper.
He stared at nothing.
Grace watched another child discover that abandonment had been protection.
It did not make the abandonment hurt less.
Then Victor turned the page.
Something fell out.
A photograph.
Taken five years earlier.
Samuel Walker.
Gabriel Reyes.
And a third man.
Older.
Distinguished.
Federal seal on the wall behind him.
Conrad Vale.
Grace stared.
“They were with him?”
The photograph showed no struggle.
They appeared to be talking.
Luca picked it up.
“Maybe negotiating.”
Victor looked at the date.
“My father was alive five years ago.”
Grace touched Samuel's face.
“So was mine.”
Behind them on a whiteboard were six words.
SHEPHERD TERMINATION — ASSET RECONCILIATION PHASE.
Luca frowned.
“Termination.”
Grace turned the photograph over.
Samuel had written something on the back.
VALE THINKS WE'RE HELPING HIM CLOSE IT.
HE DOESN'T KNOW WE FOUND THE CHILDREN.
Nobody spoke.
“What children?” Grace asked.
Victor looked through Gabriel's file.
Nothing.
Luca began pulling old Shepherd records.
Grace searched too.
After twenty minutes, she found a list encoded as veterinary vaccinations.
Sixteen numbers.
All corresponding to children between ages three and twelve.
Status:
DECEASED.
But beside several, Samuel had written:
NO BODY.
NO HOSPITAL.
NO BURIAL.
Grace's blood ran cold.
“They declared children dead.”
Luca stared.
“To reuse their identities?”
“Or to hide where they went.”
One number appeared repeatedly.
F-17.
The same code from Titan's original record.
Eight-year-old.
Red coat.
Transfer complete.
Grace remembered the red sweater.
“Who was F-17?”
They decoded the attached birth date.
October 14, 1997.
Grace went still.
Her own birthday was October 14, 1997.
“No.”
Luca stared at her.
Grace checked again.
Eight years old at the time of transfer.
That matched the year her mother died.
Her hands began shaking.
“F-17 is me.”
Victor looked horrified.
“Grace—”
“Why was I in Shepherd?”
She searched the file.
No name.
Only code.
Destination:
WALKER / ALBANY.
Grace stopped breathing.
Samuel Walker had not simply hidden her from Shepherd.
She had been processed through it.
Her legal identity had been created by the same system.
“Grace Walker,” she whispered.
Luca understood.
“May not be your birth name.”
The room tilted.
Then Victor's phone rang.
Hospital.
Matteo was awake.
He had asked for Grace.
Only Grace.
Luca refused to let her go alone.
They reached the private hospital shortly before noon.
Matteo looked gray.
Weak.
But conscious.
Grace stood beside his bed.
“You said the man who helped Samuel disappear killed my mother.”
Matteo nodded.
“I was wrong.”
Grace's anger sharpened.
“That's useful.”
“I thought Gabriel was responsible for years.”
“Who was?”
“Conrad Vale.”
“We know.”
Matteo closed his eyes.
“But that's not what I needed to tell you.”
Grace leaned closer.
“Then tell me.”
Matteo looked toward Luca.
“Lucia Moretti was not Grace's biological mother.”
Grace stopped breathing.
Luca stared.
“What?”
Matteo looked at Grace.
“Lucia raised you. Loved you. Died protecting you.”
Grace couldn't speak.
“But you came to her through Shepherd.”
“Whose child am I?”
Matteo's eyes filled with something like shame.
“That's why Antonio was so desperate to find you.”
Grace grabbed the bed rail.
“Whose child?”
Matteo whispered:
“Antonio's.”
The room went silent.
Grace looked at Luca.
If Antonio Moretti was her father—
Luca wasn't her cousin.
May you like
He was her half-brother.
And Samuel Walker, the man she had spent twelve years mourning, had risked everything to protect a child who wasn't his at all.
