Chapter 9 - THE VAULT OF SECRETS

-9-

The hidden entrance to the subterranean vault beneath the Voss compound was concealed behind a massive, two-ton marble wine rack that pivoted smoothly on a hydraulic axis. As the heavy stone wall slid aside, it revealed a steep, concrete stairwell descending into the pitch-black heart of the earth, illuminated only by emergency red track lighting along the baseboards.

Harlan drew a heavy, matte-black Sig Sauer pistol from a shoulder holster hidden beneath his vest, clicking off the safety with a sharp, metallic snap. He glanced back at me, his eyes sharp and commanding.

"Stay behind me, Rue," he ordered, taking the first step down into the cool, damp air.

I clutched the heavy iron fireplace poker like a medieval club, following closely at his heels. The air down here smelled entirely different from the rest of the mansion—it was sterile, charged with the hum of high-capacity cooling fans and the unmistakable scent of ozone from heavy server racks.

As we reached the bottom landing, the deafening sound of a high-speed mechanical shredder echoed down the concrete corridor.

"She’s in the primary data room," Harlan muttered, breaking into a tactical jog, his boots pounding against the floor.

We rounded the corner into the glowing, blue-lit expanse of the subterranean data center. Rows of towering server chassis blinked with thousands of tiny green and red lights. And standing at the master control console at the far end of the room was Mrs. Gable.

She wasn't wearing her severe navy housekeeper's dress anymore. She wore a tactical black jumpsuit, her gray hair untied and blowing wildly in the artificial wind of the server cooling vents. Her fingers flew across the mechanical keyboard with terrifying speed, while a heavy-duty industrial shredder beside her chewed through stacks of original paper ledgers, spitting confetti-like strips of confidential corporate documents onto the floor.

"Stop right there, Helen," Harlan’s voice boomed through the data center, the barrel of his pistol locking squarely on her chest.

Mrs. Gable stopped typing. She slowly turned around, leaning back against the control console. Her pale blue eyes, usually cold and clinical, were now lit with a wild, fanatical triumph.

"You're too late, Harlan," Mrs. Gable laughed, a raspy, unhinged sound that echoed off the concrete walls. "The primary decryption keys were transmitted to Arthur Sterling's secure server three minutes ago. Your empire is currently evaporating into the public ether."

"Why, Helen?" Harlan asked, his voice dropping into a dark, dangerous register as he advanced slowly toward her. "Fifteen years. You managed my estates, you helped raise my daughter, you had my absolute trust. Why sell out to Arthur?"

Mrs. Gable sneer deepened. "Trust? You think I cared about your trust, Harlan? I wasn't your housekeeper. I was an intelligence asset planted in your household twenty years ago by the very syndicate you betrayed. You thought you could walk away from the black-ops directorate and play domestic king in Detroit? You were always a ghost living on borrowed time."

She reached down slowly toward a red toggle switch mounted on the side of the console—a master self-destruct relay designed to flash-fry the entire server array with a high-voltage surge.

"Don't do it," Harlan warned, taking another step forward.

"Goodbye, Harlan," she smiled, slamming her palm down onto the red toggle.

Before the surge could fire, I didn't think. I raised the heavy iron fireplace poker and hurled it across the data center like a javelin.

The iron bar struck the console’s main power circuit with a deafening CRACK, shattering the plastic housing and sending a massive shower of white-hot electrical sparks cascading over Mrs. Gable’s hands.

She screamed, jerking her hands back as the console went completely dark, the flashing lights dying instantly into a heavy, suffocating blackness.

Harlan closed the distance in a fraction of a second, lunging forward and slamming Mrs. Gable hard against the server rack, pressing the barrel of his pistol beneath her chin.

"The game is over, Helen," Harlan whispered, his voice vibrating with lethal fury. "Call off Arthur’s extraction team, or I promise you won't live to see the inside of a federal holding cell."

Mrs. Gable stared up into the barrel of his gun, her chest heaving, the wild triumph in her eyes finally giving way to stark, unadulterated terror.
