Chapter 8 - THE BLEEDING WALLS

-8-

The security gates of the Voss compound opened with unusual hesitation as our van sped up the cobblestone driveway. The storm outside had intensified, turning the snow into a driving, heavy sleet that battered the bulletproof windows of the vehicle.

Inside the grand foyer, the atmosphere was thick with tension. The crystal chandelier cast a harsh, unforgiving light over the marble floors where three senior security guards stood at attention, their expressions grim.

Harlan Voss stood at the foot of the sweeping staircase, his dark overcoat soaked with rain, his jaw clenched so tightly the muscle ticked visibly.

"Where is Mrs. Gable?" Harlan demanded the moment I stepped through the front doors, shedding my ruined Chanel trench coat onto the marble floor.

The head of security swallowed hard, stepping forward. "Mr. Voss, we searched the east wing. Mrs. Gable’s quarters are empty. Her personal effects, her passport, and her encrypted terminal are all gone. She didn't just leave—she scrubbed her room clean before she vanished."

Mrs. Gable.

The iron-faced, severe housekeeper who had managed the estate for fifteen years, who knew every security code, every family secret, and every encrypted frequency used by the Voss empire.

"She was the mole," I whispered, the realization hitting me like a physical blow. "She’s the one who gave the frequency to Arthur’s men. She called herself an 'independent auditor' on the wire."

Harlan didn't yell. He didn't smash a vase or shatter a glass. He simply closed his eyes, took a slow, deep breath, and let his head drop back for a fraction of a second. When he opened his eyes again, they were entirely dead—the eyes of a man whose absolute trust had been weaponized against him.

"Track her," Harlan commanded, his voice dropping into a dark, razor-sharp baritone that made the guards snap to attention. "Every traffic camera in Michigan, every private aviation registry, every cell tower ping. I want her brought back to this estate before dawn. Alive."

"Yes, Mr. Voss," the security chief barked, turning sharply on his heel to deploy the tracking teams.

Harlan turned his gaze toward me. He looked me up and down, taking in the mud on my boots, the pale terror still lingering in my eyes, and the slight tremor in my hands.

"You should have died out there tonight, Rue," he said, his voice disturbingly calm as he stepped closer. "Arthur’s hit squad wasn't planning to negotiate. They were planning to frame you for the warehouse shooting and leave your body in the harbor."

"Then why did you save me?" I asked, my voice rising with a mixture of fear and lingering adrenaline. "Why risk your sniper team, why blow your tactical cover, just for a broke waitress you hired off a garage floor?"

Harlan stopped just inches away from me. He reached out, his large, warm hand gently gripping my shoulder, anchoring me to the freezing marble floor.

"Because you are not a variable, Rue," he murmured, his dark eyes burning into mine with an intensity that felt impossible to escape. "You are the center of gravity. And in this house, nobody touches my center."

Before I could process the terrifying, intoxicating weight of his words, a sharp, urgent alarm began to wail throughout the mansion—a low, rhythmic klaxon that flashed red lights along the baseboards of the foyer.

"Sir!" a guard shouted, running down the stairs from the second-floor communications hub. "The perimeter firewall has been breached! It’s not an external hack—someone is overriding the master security grid from inside the basement vault!"

Harlan’s eyes narrowed. "The basement vault? Only two people have the biometric clearance for the primary vault: myself, and..." He stopped, a grim realization dawning on him. "...Mrs. Gable."

"What’s in the vault?" I asked, my heart skipping a beat.

"Everything," Harlan said, turning toward the hidden panel beneath the grand staircase. "Every offshore account, every corporate title deed, and every classified document detailing the true origins of the Voss empire. If Mrs. Gable wipes that database, she doesn't just rob me—she hands my entire life over to Arthur Sterling on a silver platter."

"Then what are we waiting for?" I demanded, forgetting my fear entirely as I grabbed a heavy iron poker from the fireplace stand. "Let's move."
