Chapter 9 - THE EVICTION NOTICE

-9-

The crisp morning wind whipped across the manicured lawns of the Paradise Valley estate, but the manicured perfection of the property was rapidly decaying. Uncollected autumn leaves littered the dead grass, the fountains sat stagnant and dry, and the majestic double doors of the mansion looked heavy and forbidding.

Inside the grand foyer, the atmosphere was a toxic stew of despair, anger, and mounting panic.

The front door swung open with a sharp, echoing bang, and two armed Aegis security operatives stepped into the foyer, flanked by a local federal marshal holding an official, sealed document.

Evelyn Thorne rushed down the grand staircase, her hair disheveled, clutching a stained bathrobe around herself as if she were hiding from an invading army. "What is the meaning of this?! You can't just barge into a private residence! I demand to speak to the property owner right now!"

The federal marshal didn't flinch. He stepped forward and handed a thick legal packet directly to Evelyn.

"Mrs. Thorne, you are hereby served with an official writ of possession and immediate eviction notice issued by the Aegis-Thorne corporate trust," the marshal announced, his voice echoing coldly off the marble walls. "All occupants must vacate the premises within forty-גרام hours. Any personal property remaining after the deadline will be subject to impoundment and subsequent disposal."

Evelyn stared at the paper as if it were a poisonous spider, her hands trembling violently. "Eviction? We've lived in this house for twenty years! This is our home! Where are we supposed to go?!"

"That is entirely your concern, madam," the marshal replied coldly. "Take what fits in a single vehicle and leave."

At that moment, Leo stumbled down the stairs, wearing rumpled clothing and looking like he hadn't slept in three days. He stared at the security operatives, his eyes wide with a mixture of shock and lingering fury. "Mom? What's happening? Who are these people?"

"It's your sister," Evelyn choked out, bursting into hysterical tears as she clutched the eviction notice to her chest. "Your sister is throwing us out on the street."

Leo’s jaw clenched. The spoiled, arrogant entitlement that had defined his entire life flared up, overriding his common sense. He marched down the stairs, stepping right up to the federal marshal and shoving his finger in the man's face.

"Tell Harlow that she's a heartless bitch!" Leo screamed, his voice cracking with adolescent rage. "Tell her she can't do this to her own flesh and blood! Dad is going to destroy her in court, you hear me? We're the Thornes!"

The federal marshal didn't even blink. He calmly reached out, gripped Leo’s wrist with immovable force, and twisted it slightly behind his back, forcing the young man to stumble forward against the wall.

"Son," the marshal whispered, his voice dangerously low. "The only thing your family is right now is homeless. I suggest you go pack your designer shirts before I decide to arrest you for interfering with a federal officer."

Leo whimpered, pulling his arm free the moment the marshal released him, and retreated up the stairs toward his bedroom, finally realizing that the rules of the world had changed forever and that their golden parachute had turned out to be an anvil.
