Chapter 7 - THE FALLOUT SPREADS

-7-

The live broadcast of my press conference hit the airwaves with the concussive force of a tactical bomb. Across the country, televisions in living rooms, break rooms, and bustling stock exchanges flickered to life, broadcasting my face to millions of stunned viewers. In Paradise Valley, the feed projected onto the massive living room television screen of our former family mansion, where my mother and brother were currently trapped in a house with no electricity, no running water, and a mounting sense of apocalyptic dread.

"Turn that off!" Evelyn shrieked, throwing a decorative throw pillow at the screen in a fit of absolute, unbridled rage. "Turn that wretched thing off right now, Leo! She's mocking us! Your sister is publicly humiliating us on national television!"

Leo, sprawled out on the dusty leather sofa in his silk pajamas, stared at the screen with a look of slack-jawed horror. The anchorwoman on CNN was currently running a biographical profile of my career, flashing images of Aegis Holdings' gleaming glass towers across the screen while detailing how my private investments had secretly sustained Thorne Enterprises for the past three years.

"Mom... she's a billionaire," Leo whispered, his voice trembling as the sheer magnitude of what we had thrown away finally penetrated his dense skull. "Harlow isn't a freelance artist. She owns... she owns everything. She owns this house. She owns dad's company. She owns the bank that just foreclosed on our credit cards."

Evelyn collapsed onto the armchair, burying her face in her hands as silent, bitter tears of utter defeat tracked down her cheeks. The game was over. The luxury cars, the country club memberships, the endless social climbing—all of it had evaporated into thin air, leaving them stranded in a cold, dark mansion with no power and no savior.

Meanwhile, back in the Aegis auditorium, my press conference was reaching its crescendo.

"...and let this serve as a clear, unequivocal message to corporate predators everywhere," I stated, leaning slightly into the microphone, my eyes locked onto the primary camera lens broadcasting live to the nation. "The era of unchecked corporate greed, built on the backs of exploited labor and familial manipulation, is officially over. Aegis Holdings is committed to absolute transparency, ethical restructuring, and ruthless accountability. Thank you."

The auditorium erupted into a chaotic storm of flashing camera lights and shouting reporters thrusting their microphones forward.

"Director Thorne! Director Thorne! Is it true that your father embezzled funds from your private shell companies?"

"Will Arthur Thorne face criminal prosecution for corporate fraud?"

"What are your plans for the future of Thorne Enterprises?"

I didn't answer their frantic shouting. I simply offered a calm, polite nod, stepped back from the podium, and turned away, flanked by Marcus and two towering Aegis security guards. As I walked off the stage and back toward the private executive elevator, a profound, breathtaking wave of peace washed over my soul.

The Paradise Valley nightmare was dead and buried. The people who had sought to crush me had been systematically dismantled by their own boundless arrogance.

And as the heavy steel doors of the executive elevator slid shut behind me, sealing me off from the media circus outside, I knew that the empire I had built was finally, beautifully, and permanently my own.
