Chapter 9 - THE CHILD WHO REMEMBERED THE RAIN

-9

Rain triggered Leo’s first full memory.

It was six months after restaurant night.

A storm hit Brooklyn.

Thunder.

Leo screamed.

Clara was at Rico’s townhouse because she had become part of Leo’s care team with therapist approval, but she did not live there.

Rico rushed.

Leo hid under table.

Clara crawled near, not under without invite.

Tap tap.

Safe.

Leo whispered:

“Rain car.”

Clara froze.

Dr. Bennett had warned memories may come spontaneously.

Do not interrogate.

She said:

“Rain car.”

Leo nodded.

“Mommy cry.”

Rico stood doorway.

He looked ill.

Clara raised hand.

Do not interrupt.

Leo:

“Vince open.”

“Door?”

Nod.

“Bang.”

He covered ears.

Clara breathed.

“Then what?”

Too leading? Better: “You can tell me if you want.”

Leo said:

“Wolf phone.”

Clara:

“You saw wolf?”

He shook head.

“Phone wolf.”

Maybe on Vince's phone contact icon? Salvatore's contact image was wolf? Interesting. Leo may have seen Vince's phone with silver wolf logo before attack. That could corroborate contact.

“Phone show wolf?”

Nod.

Then:

“Mama say no.”

“What did Mama say?”

Leo's face crumpled.

“No take Leo.”

Rico collapsed into chair.

So perhaps before attack, Elena was on phone with Salvatore, arguing about taking Leo? Or in car, Vince handed phone? Let's parse.

Leo continued:

“Uncle Sal say Mama bad.”

Maybe earlier that day.

Could be mixed memories.

Therapist later helps separate.

The most reliable piece:

Leo remembers Salvatore visiting house morning of murder.

Rain.

He argued Elena.

He said:

“If you take that boy away, you’ll destroy Rico.”

Elena:

“I’m saving him.”

Salvatore grabbed her wrist.

Wolf ring.

Leo saw.

Then later attack.

Thus ring association.

Excellent.

Leo finally speaks:

“Wolf hurt Mama hand.”

Not murder scene but threat.

This plus Elena docs.

Rico cries.

Then therapist advises record but no pressure.

The child's testimony may not be used heavily due age, but corroborative.

Rico asks Leo:

“Did Papa scare Mama?”

Leo thinks.

“Papa loud.”

Rico winces.

“Papa break glass.”

He remembers an argument? Rico once threw glass in rage.

Clara sees.

Rico asks:

“Did Papa hurt Mama?”

Leo shakes head.

But loudness matters.

Rico apologizes.

No defensive.

“Papa was wrong to scare.”

Then he takes responsibility.

Then same night Rico tells Clara he’s turning himself in/cooperating for own crimes.

She is shocked.

“You could lose Leo.”

“I already almost did.”

He has lawyers arranging plea preserving parental contact but custody during incarceration to trusted guardian. Who? Clara is aunt, but relationship new. Mom? Elena's aunt? Maybe nanny and Clara. Better Rico has no safe family. Clara is blood aunt. Court can place with her if she agrees after vetting. Huge ask.

Rico says:

“I won't ask you.”

Good.

Clara chooses later.

Dr. Bennett/child welfare. She has stable enough though waitress. Rico can establish legal trust to support Leo independently, not buy custody.

Clara says:

“I’ll be his aunt. Not your substitute wife.”

May you like

Good boundary.

Potential romance slow.
