Chapter 8 - DANTE’S SECRET

Dante confessed before anyone accused him.
That made it worse and better.
He came to Rico at 2 a.m.
Clara was asleep in guest room? Why there? Maybe they had moved Leo temporarily to secure penthouse; Clara stayed because Leo trusted. She needed boundaries. Let's say at Rico’s townhouse with nanny; Clara had refused to move in permanently but sometimes stayed late. That night she was there after Leo nightmare.
Dante said:
“I knew Elena was scared of Salvatore.”
Rico stood.
“How long?”
“Two months before death.”
Clara closed eyes.
Rico’s voice became lethal.
“You knew.”
“She asked me not to tell.”
“Why?”
“She said you’d confront him.”
Correct.
“Did you believe?”
“I believed she believed.”
Not same.
Dante thought Salvatore arrogant, controlling, but murder own nephew's wife impossible.
Family bias.
Then Elena asked Dante to check Vince.
He did casually.
Found nothing.
He told her she was imagining.
She stopped asking.
Dante carried guilt.
Then night of murder, Vince changed route.
Dante was on Rico’s detail, not Elena.
He saw route alert.
Thought normal.
After attack, he reviewed but Salvatore told him:
“Rico needs enemy, not questions.”
Dante hated line but accepted.
He focused on rival theory.
Then:
“I failed her.”
Rico punched wall? Could, but not person. Clara flinches. He stops.
“Why tell now?”
“Because I’ve spent six months letting you think certainty existed.”
Then Dante pulled old phone.
He had retained a voicemail Elena left him day before death.
Never deleted.
He had never played for Rico.
Why?
It made him look negligent.
He played.
Elena:
“Dante, if anything happens tomorrow, check Vince before you check enemies. Please. And do not let Rico turn this into a war.”
Rico stared.
Tomorrow.
She knew danger immediate.
Dante had received.
What did he do?
He called Vince.
Vince laughed.
Said Elena paranoid.
Dante did not escalate.
Then Elena died next day.
He buried voicemail because shame.
Rico wanted hit him.
Instead sat.
Clara watched.
This was test.
Rico whispered:
“You protected yourself.”
Dante nodded.
“Yes.”
“Not me.”
“No.”
“Not Elena.”
“No.”
“Not Leo.”
“No.”
Then:
“You’re suspended from security command.”
Dante’s eyes widened.
“Boss.”
“Independent review.”
Clara said nothing.
Good.
Not family-style cover.
Dante surrendered credentials.
Stayed available.
Rico appointed outside security firm temporarily.
This was painful.
Dante had saved Rico’s life twice.
Yet trust specific.
Not permanent.
Independent investigation found no evidence Dante participated murder.
But serious failure to disclose evidence and conflict.
Would he return?
Later maybe in reduced role.
For now, no.
Then Leo asked where Dante.
Rico said:
“He made a mistake and we’re checking if he can keep us safe.”
Age-appropriate.
No “traitor.”
Then Clara confronted Dante separately.
“Why didn’t you trust Elena?”
He looked wrecked.
“Because women in this family are always called emotional when they see danger before men.”
Clara surprised.
He knew.
Then:
“I thought I was different.”
But behavior same.
He apologized.
Clara:
“Apologize to her?”
Can't.
So carry.
Then Dante gave another clue.
Elena had asked him about Crown Trust.
What?
A trust controlling Moretti Holdings shares if Rico incapacitated/dead.
She was reviewing.
Salvatore as backup protector.
Dante thought estate planning.
Now motive.
Margaret retrieved.
Salvatore had pushed amendment six months before Elena death, allegedly to “ensure continuity.”
The amendment would expand protector power over Leo’s voting shares during minority.
Rico had signed?
Draft, not final.
Elena stopped.
She told Rico paperwork needed review.
He postponed.
If she died and Rico later died, older version still gave Salvatore some influence but less.
Salvatore had wanted more.
Elena blocked.
Motive stronger.
Then one email from Salvatore to attorney:
Elena does not understand succession. Rico is emotionally dependent on her. We need structure before something happens.
Before something happens.
Maybe ominous.
Then Clara asked Rico:
“Why is a criminal uncle in your son’s trust at all?”
Rico winced.
“Because families like mine trust blood.”
“Even when blood is problem.”
“Yes.”
He amended through legal channels immediately, removing Salvatore subject court/board approval, appointing independent fiduciaries.
No more family sole.
Then Rico made another decision.
He began separating from criminal enterprise.
Not overnight.
He could not simply resign and walk.
But he instructed lawyers to negotiate with federal/state authorities about his own exposure in exchange for cooperation on Salvatore and broader racketeering? High stakes. Could lead prison. We need happy ending but grounded.
Maybe Rico's "mafia boss" is active criminal. If he wants exit, likely consequences. We can have he cooperates, pleads guilty to financial conspiracy charges, serves a shortish sentence? But user likely wants alluring ending, maybe 4 years later. Could. This would make moral arc strong and not glorify impunity.
Let's set later: Rico enters cooperation, pleads to nonviolent racketeering/financial crimes, gets 30 months partly due cooperation. But as capo he likely serious. Could be longer. Maybe 5 years. Yet romance can survive. We'll do maybe 4 years sentence? Hmm.
Alternative he was "boss" by reputation but current activities mostly legitimate with inherited old syndicate, still violent. Yet opening said dismantled rivals with pistol. Clearly murderer. Can't just absolve. So if happy ending, he should face law. We can have he accepts 6-year federal sentence, reduced to 4 with cooperation. Leo lives with Clara/guardian? But Clara isn't legal relative recognized? Aunt. Could. Rico keeps parental rights with supervised visits maybe. This becomes more dramatic.

But user likely expects mafia romance fantasy where boss stays free. Yet safer values better if consequences. We can still have compelling.
