Chapter 2 - The Anatomy of a Whisper-2-

The monitor's alarm was a jagged, piercing sound that set Claire’s teeth on edge. Dr. Price and two nurses rushed into the room, their movements practiced and frantic. Gabriel backed away, his face turning into a mask of stone, though his eyes remained fixed on his daughter.
"She’s spiking a fever," a nurse announced, checking the lines. "Heart rate is over 140. We need to sedate her."
"No sedatives!" Gabriel barked, the authority in his voice stopping the medical staff mid-motion. He turned to Claire. "What did she mean? What lady?"
Claire felt the weight of the moment. She hadn't expected to be thrust into the heart of the mystery within the first ten minutes. "I don't know, Mr. Varrick. But she’s not hallucinating. That was a clear, conscious statement. Someone has been threatening her. Someone who had access to this room."
Gabriel walked to the window, his back to them. His shadow stretched long across the floor, a dark silhouette against the city lights. "This room is guarded by the most sophisticated security in New York. No one enters or leaves without my explicit knowledge. My staff has been with me for a decade. Every one of them has been vetted by the most rigorous standards."
"Then one of them is an excellent actor," Claire countered, her voice firm despite the fear clawing at her throat. "And they've been doing this for a long time. If Lily is reacting this way, it’s not just one comment. It’s a campaign of terror."
As the doctors stabilized the girl, Claire moved closer, whispering so only the nurses could hear. "Has anyone else been in this room? A cleaner? A server? Someone who stays while you’re out?"
A nurse, a woman with tired eyes and a tight bun, looked around nervously. "Only Ms. Halloway. The head housekeeper. She’s the only one who cleans the master suite. She’s been with the Varricks since before Lily was born."
"Get her," Gabriel said, his voice a low, dangerous rumble.
"Sir, she’s currently on her break," the nurse said.
"Get her," Gabriel repeated, and he didn't need to shout. The nurse scurried from the room.
Claire sat back down on the floor, her heart racing. She realized that she wasn't just a nanny; she was a witness. She watched Lily’s face as the fever began to subside. The girl looked exhausted, but she hadn't opened her eyes again.
"She called me 'Grandpa' in her sleep earlier," Gabriel said, turning around. He looked older than his forty-one years. "She keeps asking for my father. My father has been dead for six years."
Claire felt a chill down her spine. "Maybe it's a person she associates with him? Or someone who looks like him?"
"There is no one," Gabriel said. "My father was a man who lived and died in isolation. There are no ghosts in this life, Claire. Only people who want something, and people who are willing to do anything to get it."
When Ms. Halloway entered the room, she looked like the epitome of professional service—a woman in her late fifties, wearing a crisp uniform, her face a neutral map of duty.
"Mr. Varrick," she said, her voice steady. "You requested my presence?"
"Lily mentioned a lady in a red coat," Gabriel said, his eyes drilling into the woman. "She says this person told her you were going to kill her."
Halloway didn't flinch. She simply looked at Lily, then back at Gabriel. "I see. And you believe a child who has been in shock for four days? Mr. Varrick, I have been loyal to this family for years. I am a housekeeper, not a monster. If you want to believe the delusions of a sick girl over your most trusted employee, that is your choice."
Gabriel stepped toward her, his presence suffocating. "Is it a delusion? Or is it a memory of a threat?"
"I have no idea what you're talking about," Halloway said. But Claire noticed it—a tiny, imperceptible tic in the woman's jaw. She was scared. She was terrified.
"Claire," Gabriel said, not taking his eyes off the housekeeper. "Stay with Lily. Do not leave this room. Halloway, you’re coming with me."
"And where are we going?" Halloway asked, her voice finally losing its composure.
"To the security office," Gabriel said. "We’re going to review every second of footage from the last four days. And if I find you in this room, even once, you won't leave this building alive."
He dragged the housekeeper out, and the door clicked shut. Claire was alone in the room with the heart monitor and the girl who held the secret of the underworld in her silent, feverish head. She leaned down to Lily’s ear, whispering softly, "I’m here, Lily. I’m the lady who’s going to make sure no one hurts you anymore."

To her surprise, Lily’s hand reached out, grabbing Claire’s sleeve with a strength that was impossible for a starving child. "The red coat," Lily whispered. "She’s hiding in the music room. She’s waiting for Daddy to leave."
Claire’s breath hitched. She looked at the door. If she left to find this woman, she would be violating Gabriel's orders. If she stayed, she was letting a killer wander through the penthouse. She didn't have a choice. She slowly stood up, her eyes on the bedroom door, and realized that her emergency babysitting job had just turned into a hunt.
