Chapter 5 - A NEW DAWN AT CROSS ESTATE

-5
The morning sun broke through the heavy stained-glass windows of the grand foyer, casting vibrant splashes of red, blue, and gold across the freshly polished marble floors. The estate was unusually quiet, but it was no longer the heavy, suffocating silence of fear and tyranny. It was the peaceful, steady hum of a household finally operating under the care of someone who actually knew how to protect it.
Gemma stood by the main staircase, wearing a tailored navy-blue blazer over her crisp white blouse—the uniform of her new, elevated position as Chief of Domestic Security and Personal Guardian. Her posture was erect, her eyes sharp and observant as she reviewed the estate’s morning patrol logs on a digital tablet.
“Good morning, Gemma,” a soft, cheerful voice called out from the landing above.
Gemma looked up to see Lucy skipping down the grand staircase, her little pink sneakers tapping lightly against the marble steps. The dark, fearful shadows that had long haunted the six-year-old’s eyes were completely gone, replaced by the bright, uninhibited smile of a child who finally felt safe in her own home.
“Good morning, Princess,” Gemma greeted warmly, stepping forward to catch Lucy at the bottom of the stairs and giving her a gentle, affectionate hug. “Did you sleep well?”
“Like a rock! And guess what? Daddy said we can go to the botanical gardens this afternoon!” Lucy beamed, holding up a small, freshly drawn picture of a butterfly. “I drew this for you, Gemma, to say thank you for my inhaler.”
Gemma accepted the drawing, her heart swelling with a deep, maternal warmth she hadn't allowed herself to feel in years. “It’s beautiful, Lucy. I’m going to frame it right on my desk.”
Just then, the heavy oak doors of the master study opened, and Fabian stepped out. He was dressed in his usual immaculate charcoal suit, but the harsh, unapproachable frost that had defined his expression for years seemed to have softened around the edges. He stopped, watching the interaction between Gemma and his daughter with a quiet, contemplative expression.
“Good morning, Mr. Cross,” Gemma said, maintaining professional decorum, though her tone was now laced with mutual respect.
“Gemma. Lucy,” Fabian nodded, walking over to them. He knelt down beside his daughter, checking her breathing with a quick, practiced hand against her shoulder. “How is your chest today, sweetheart? Any tightness?”
“None at all, Daddy! Gemma gave me my medicine right on time, and we practiced my breathing exercises before bed!” Lucy reported proudly, throwing her arms around her father’s neck.
Fabian held her close for a moment, pressing a rare, tender kiss to the top of her dark hair. He looked up, his ice-blue eyes meeting Gemma’s steady gaze over his daughter’s shoulder.
“Senator Briggs announced his resignation on national television thirty minutes ago,” Fabian stated quietly, the news hanging in the air like a fallen executioner's axe. “The media is calling it a shocking medical retirement. His daughter Ophelia has been permanently escorted off the property and deposited back at her father’s Georgetown townhouse. Her biometric access cards have been wiped, and her name has been scrubbed from every active file in this syndicate.”
Gemma nodded slowly, showing no surprise. She had known the outcome the moment Fabian set his sights on the target. “And the security logistics for the estate?”
“Fully updated under your command,” Fabian replied, standing up to his full height. He reached into his breast pocket and withdrew a small, ornate brass key, holding it out toward her. “This unlocks the master security vault in the west wing. It contains the primary communication codes, the encrypted satellite feeds, and the personnel files for every operative on our payroll. You now hold the keys to the entire house, Gemma.”
Gemma looked at the brass key resting in his palm. It was a massive responsibility—a level of trust that Fabian Cross had never bestowed upon anyone outside his inner circle of capos. She reached out, her fingers closing securely around the cold metal.
“I won't let you down, Boss,” Gemma said, using the title with a new, profound gravity.

“I know you won't,” Fabian said softly. He turned toward the double doors leading to the courtyard, where his armored town car was idling in the crisp morning air. “Come, girls. Let’s go to the botanical gardens. It’s time my daughter learned what the world looks like when the storms finally clear.”
As Fabian led Lucy and Gemma out into the bright, sunlit courtyard, the heavy iron gates of the Cross estate swung open wide. For the first time in years, the shadows had been completely swept away, leaving behind an unbreakable fortress built not just on fear and power, but on loyalty, protection, and the unyielding grace of a second chance.
