Chapter 10 - THE SIEGE OF CROSS ESTATE

-10

The pulsing red emergency lights cast a strobe-like effect across the marble hallways of the estate as the security lockdown protocol fully engaged. Heavy steel shutters dropped automatically over the ground-floor windows, turning the grand mansion into an impenetrable concrete bunker.

Fabian moved through the corridors with the cold, lethal grace of a master tactician, his Sig Sauer held at the ready. Behind him, Salvatore and four heavily armed capos fell into formation, their tactical harnesses bristling with weaponry.

"Gemma," Fabian barked, pausing by the foot of the grand staircase where Gemma stood holding a secure encrypted radio. "Take Lucy to the reinforced panic room in the master pavilion. Do not open the door for anyone—not even me—unless you hear the three-knock protocol."

"I'm not hiding, Boss. I'm running your tactical grid," Gemma stated firmly, holding up her tablet, which was streaming real-time thermal imaging of the intruders advancing through the courtyard gardens. "The intruders are deploying a localized EMP device near the generator. If they blow the auxiliary power, your primary cameras go dark in three minutes."

Fabian looked at her, seeing the absolute, unyielding courage blazing in her eyes. There was no time to argue.

"Fine. Stay on my six, and do not leave my line of sight," Fabian ordered sharply. "Salvatore, deploy the smoke canisters near the fountain. Flush them out into the open."

"On it," Salvatore grunted, tossing a tactical grenade toward the front courtyard.

Within seconds, a thick, blinding cloud of white smoke erupted across the grounds, obscuring the moonlight and turning the estate's sprawling gardens into a hazy, disorienting battlefield.

From the shadows of the greenhouse, a volley of suppressed automatic gunfire chewed through the stone pillars of the veranda. Bullets whined into the night, chipping ancient masonry and shattering decorative planters.

"Contact! Eleven o'clock!" Salvatore roared, returning fire with a suppressed submachine gun.

Fabian did not flinch. He dropped to one knee behind a marble balustrade, using the cold stone as cover. His eyes scanned the smoke through his tactical night-vision scope. He spotted two figures in black tactical gear creeping along the edge of the terrace, trying to flank the western entrance.

Crack. Crack.

Two precise, synchronized shots rang out. Both intruders dropped instantly, neutralized by clean, center-mass impacts.

"Sector West is clear!" Fabian shouted over the din of gunfire.

"Boss! We have a breach at the service kitchen entrance!" Gemma’s voice called out sharply from behind him. Her fingers raced across her tablet. "A third operative just forced the manual latch using a hydraulic wedge. He's inside the building!"

Fabian spun on his heel, his tactical instincts overriding everything else. "Gemma, get back—!"

Before he could finish the warning, the heavy oak doors of the service corridor burst open. A massive man in tactical gear lunged through the doorway, leveling an assault rifle directly at Gemma’s chest.

In a fraction of a second, instinct took over.

Gemma did not scream; she did not cower. With a swift, fluid motion, she dropped flat to the marble floor, dragging her heavy security tablet with her.

Fabian’s weapon flashed.

CRACK.

A single bullet pierced the intruder's chest, spinning him backward and crashing him hard against the oak doorframe before he slumped lifelessly to the floor.

The hallway fell instantly, terrifyingly silent, save for the faint hiss of the emergency ventilation system and the crackle of the distant fire.

Fabian rushed forward, dropping to his knees beside Gemma, his hands gripping her shoulders. "Gemma! Are you hit?!"

Gemma blinked, looking up at him, her breath coming in shallow gasps. She shook her head slowly. "I'm... I'm not hit. I'm okay."

Fabian exhaled a harsh, ragged breath—a sound so raw and unfiltered that it shocked even him. He pulled her up against his chest in a fierce, protective embrace, his fingers tangling in her hair. For a terrifying second, as the gun barrel pointed at her, he had realized just how empty, how cold, and how utterly devastating his life would be if he lost her.

"You fool," Fabian whispered fiercely against her ear, his voice trembling with a mixture of rage and overwhelming relief. "I told you to stay behind me."

Gemma rested her hands against his chest, feeling the frantic, hammering rhythm of his heart beneath the expensive suit fabric. She looked up into his ice-blue eyes, seeing the raw, exposed humanity that he hid from the rest of the world.

"You said... you said the walls were strong enough to hold," Gemma whispered back, her voice steady and soft.

Fabian looked down at her lips, the battlefield, the syndicate, and the gunfire fading entirely into the background. In the middle of the smoking hallway, the cold mafia boss and his loyal guardian closed the distance between them, sealing an unspoken vow forged in fire and absolute survival.
