Chapter 13 - A NEW GENERATION

The following spring brought new life to the ranch in the form of a fresh litter of German Shepherd puppies—eight squirming, furry balls of chaotic energy that kept Tessa and Miles endlessly entertained for hours on end.
I spent my mornings running agility drills with the older dogs, while afternoons were dedicated to teaching Tessa the foundational principles of canine handling and behavioral psychology. She had developed a remarkable, intuitive patience with the animals, reading their posture and calming their nervous energy with the exact same steady grace her mother had used to rebuild our family.
On a warm Sunday afternoon, the entire extended family—Sarah, her husband, Elena, the kids, and I—gathered on the back patio for a massive barbecue. The smell of grilled ribs and smoked brisket drifted through the air, mixing with the happy barks of dogs and the musical laughter of children playing in the grass.
Sterling had even sent a polite, formal letter of congratulations for the upcoming awards gala, along with a generous, anonymous donation to the local animal shelter—a gesture we accepted as a sincere step toward genuine rehabilitation.
I sat at the wooden picnic table, sipping a cold glass of sweet tea, watching Elena chase Miles across the lawn as he giggled uncontrollably in her arms.
Sarah walked over, sliding onto the bench opposite me and resting a plate of ribs on the table.
"You know, little brother," Sarah said, eyeing the sprawling ranch with a satisfied grin. "If someone had told me five years ago that we'd be sitting here as local heroes instead of running from a corrupt mayor's hit squad, I would have told them they were completely insane."
"You and me both, Sar," I agreed, taking a bite of a rib. "You and me both."
"So, are you going to wear a tuxedo to the gala next week?" she teased, raising an eyebrow. "Or are you going to show up in your standard training vest and mud-caked boots?"
"Elena already bought me a suit," I laughed. "Navy blue. Tailored. She said if I show up in a training vest, she'll lock me out of the house again."

"Smart woman," Sarah chuckled, shaking her head. "Always has a plan."
As the sun began to dip below the horizon, painting the Oklahoma sky in magnificent strokes of violet, orange, and gold, I felt a deep, profound sense of gratitude wash over my soul. We had walked through the fire, faced down the darkest corners of human greed and corruption, and come out the other side entirely unbroken.
