Chapter 11 - REBUILDING THE BRIDGE

-11-

The drive back to our ranch-style home in Edmond felt entirely different from the frantic, terrified journey we had taken weeks ago. The storm clouds had finally cleared, leaving behind a brilliant, sun-drenched Oklahoma sky that stretched out endlessly across the horizon.

When we pulled into the driveway, Tessa and Miles came running out of the front door, shouting with joy as they threw their arms around Elena and me.

"Mom! Dad! You're home!" Tessa cheered, burying her face in my jacket.

"We're home, sweetie," I smiled, lifting Miles up into my arms and kissing his cheek. "And nobody is ever going to scare you again."

Sarah parked her massive pickup truck right behind us, climbing out and stretching her arms with a satisfied grin. "Well, that was certainly more exciting than rounding up stray cattle. Who's ready for a celebratory steak dinner?"

"I am!" Miles cheered.

Inside, the house felt lighter, warmer, and entirely free of the toxic secrets that had poisoned our walls for months. The burner phone was gone, destroyed in a secure federal incinerator; the financial ledgers were safely archived in Washington; and our family was finally standing together on solid ground.

Elena walked into the kitchen, leaning against the counter and looking out at the backyard where the dogs were happily chasing each other across the training field. She looked tired, but the haunted, hunted look in her eyes had completely vanished, replaced by a quiet, profound peace.

I walked up behind her, wrapping my arms gently around her waist and resting my chin on her shoulder.

"Penny for your thoughts," I murmured softly.

Elena leaned back against my chest, covering my hands with hers. "I was just thinking about how close we came to losing everything, Grant. Because I was too proud to tell you the truth from the very beginning."

"We made mistakes," I admitted, kissing the side of her neck. "Both of us. But we survived them. And we proved that when someone threatens our family, we don't break—we build an army."

Elena turned around in my arms, wrapping her arms around my neck and pulling me into a deep, passionate kiss that washed away the last lingering shadows of the past.

"No more secrets, Grant?" she whispered against my lips.

"No more secrets," I promised.
