Chapter 7 - The Server Cascades-7

The interior of the subterranean utility matrix was a cavernous tomb of cold concrete, roaring ventilation turbines, and exposed high-voltage conduits that vibrated with a deafening, industrial hum. The air down here was thick, smelling of axle grease, diesel fuel, and the sharp chemical tang of hot hydraulic fluid.
Sawyer and Agent Harris moved with clinical speed down the narrow iron catwalk, guided only by the narrow, red-filtered beams of their tactical flashlights. With every level they descended into the bunker's foundations, the heat rose, generated by the thousands of high-density processor blades humming inside the central server vault ahead.
They reached the heavy, reinforced glass door of Server Array Alpha. Through the ballistic glass, the massive corporate mainframes could be seen glowing with millions of blinking blue and green LED lights, casting a cool, rhythmic pattern across the room.
Standing at the administrative master console in the center of the vault, his face illuminated by the bright blue glow of a diagnostic monitor, was Marcus Croft.
He was dressed in an expensive charcoal suit, but his tie was loosened, his face covered in sweat, his eyes bloodshot and wild with a desperate, manic panic. Beside him stood Carolina, still clutching her leather purse in one hand and a carbon-fiber briefcase in the other, her face completely pale, her lips trembling as she watched a massive progress bar scrolling across the central monitor: TRANSMITTING OWENS LOGISTICS MASTER DEEDS TO CYPRUS ACCOUNT: 84%... 85%... 86%...
"Finalize it, Marcus!" Carolina shrieked over the roar of the server fans, her voice cracking with pure, unadulterated madness. "The FBI tracked me to the hospital! Sawyer has the neighbor's video! If that transfer doesn't hit one hundred percent before the precinct processes the state warrant, my mother won't be able to protect us from the circuit court grand jury!"
"I’m moving the encryption layers as fast as the proxy allows, Carolina!" Marcus yelled back, his fingers flying across the mechanical keyboard as he bypassed the remaining federal firewalls. "Sawyer’s personal administrative token has a rolling cryptographic delay—it requires a secondary biometric validation from the Owens Group database every ten minutes! I’m forcing the system override now!"
"You're not forcing anything, Marcus," Sawyer’s voice rang out through the server vault speaker system, deadly calm, steady as iron as he pushed the shattered glass vault door open with his steel crowbar.
Marcus and Carolina jumped, their heads snapping up, their eyes widening in pure, animalistic terror as Sawyer and Agent Harris stepped into the light, followed by a dozen heavily armed tactical operators whose laser sights instantly painted bright red dots across Marcus’s chest.

Carolina let out a sharp, guttural scream, dropping the carbon-fiber briefcase onto the floorboards and reaching into her purse, her hand emerging with a sleek, silver compact pistol, leveling the barrel directly at Sawyer’s forehead.
"Don't move, Sawyer!" she shrieked, her face distorted into a demonic mask of pure, desperate self-preservation. "Step back! Tell the feds to clear the room! If you take another step, I swear to God, I will pull this trigger and end this right now!"
