Chapter 6 - The Industrial Canal Annex-6

The cold, torrential rain battered the windshield of the massive black FBI tactical SUV as it tore down the deserted industrial corridors toward the shipping canal. Sawyer sat in the passenger seat, his travel jacket thrown aside, his sleeves rolled up to reveal his powerful forearms, his gray eyes locked onto the digital tactical monitor mounted on the dashboard frame.

The time was 6:42 a.m. We had precisely seventy-eight minutes before the financial markets opened in New York, executing the automatic verification script that would permanently lock the riverfront infrastructure deeds inside Vanguard Global’s offshore accounts.

"The annex is a windowless concrete bunker," Agent Harris said from behind the wheel, her hands white against the steering wheel as she pushed the high-performance vehicle through a flooded intersection. "It was built during the manufacturing boom of the 1970s, reinforced with heavy steel blast doors and protected by an independent power grid funded by Vance Financial. Marcus Croft has four private security operators stationed on the roof helipad, and the internal security network is hardwired to a localized thermite self-destruct charge designed to incinerate the server core if a physical breach is detected."

"He won't detonate the thermite until the transmission hits one hundred percent," Sawyer said, his voice steady as iron over the roar of the vehicle's engine and the thunder shaking the valley sky. "He needs the physical data core intact to validate the signature blocks with the Cypriot banks. If we can isolate the building’s primary high-voltage intake vault near the canal locks, we can short-circuit their auxiliary battery array, freezing the transmission script mid-cascade."

The SUV slammed to a halt behind a row of heavy privacy hedges overlooking the annex courtyard. Through the blurred sheets of gray rain, the dark silhouette of the concrete bunker loomed out of the darkness like a broken finger reaching into the stormy sky.

Carolina’s luxury sedan was parked right in front of the main administrative loading dock, its driver's side door thrown wide open to the rain, its headlights still cutting through the dark courtyard like the eyes of a stranded predator.

"Tactical teams, execute the perimeter seal," Agent Harris commanded into her headset, her voice dropping into a sharp, military cadence. "Bypass the main loading dock—the doors are electronically welded from the inside. We’re taking the old utility access tunnel that runs from the water filtration station directly beneath the blast vault."

Sawyer didn't wait for the tactical operators to clear the vehicle. He grabbed a heavy steel crowbar from the SUV’s rear utility chest, his face a grim, unyielding mask of pure adrenaline as he flung his door open, lunging out into the freezing storm.

The rain hit his face like needles, but he didn't feel the cold. He only saw the glowing red lights of the annex’s electronic security matrix, and the memory of his daughter’s purple back burning into his soul like a brand.

He reached the utility access door, wedged the flat head of the crowbar into the steel latch frame, braced his heavy boots against the concrete wall, and threw his entire body weight downward. With a deafening, metallic screech of ripping steel, the door frame tore open, plunging them down into the dark, wind-howling bowels of the concrete bunker.
