Chapter 8 - Locked in the Cellar

-8-
The cellar beneath the Carver mansion was a damp, stone-walled labyrinth that had once been used to store vintage wines and winter preserves before the estate was modernized. Now, it smelled of stale earth, mortar dust, and generations of forgotten family history.
The two guards shoved Emma through the heavy iron-reinforced door, pushing her down onto the cold stone floor.
“Stay put, Mrs. Carver,” the larger of the two guards grunted, his flashlight cutting a harsh beam across the dark room. “Mr. Carver will decide what to do with you once he deals with the federal agents downtown.”
Clang.
The iron door slammed shut, followed by the heavy, echoing thud of a deadbolt sliding into place from the outside. A moment later, the sound of their heavy boots faded up the wooden stairs, leaving Emma alone in absolute darkness.
She didn't panic. She reached into her coat pocket, pulled out her burner phone, and pressed the side button. The screen lit up, casting a soft blue glow across her face.
The battery was at fifteen percent.
She had just enough power to make one encrypted call. She dialed a direct extension that bypassed public carriers—the secure relay line Detective Miller had given her before she left the precinct.
It rang twice before a gruff voice answered.
“Miller.”
“It’s me,” Emma whispered, keeping her voice low. “They locked me in the cellar of the North Side estate. Nathan knows the federal freeze is in motion, and he’s trying to arrange transport out of the state before noon.”
“We’re en route to your location right now,” Miller replied crisply over the secure line. “We intercepted Nathan’s corporate communications ten minutes ago. He booked a private charter flight out of the municipal airfield for twelve-thirty today. But Emma... there’s something else.”
Emma’s breath hitched. “What is it?”
“We ran facial recognition on the security footage from the storage locker last night, cross-referencing old airline manifests and private financial transfers from Meridian Crest.” Miller paused, taking a breath. “Your father didn't just go into hiding to escape a corporate hostile takeover. He was being hunted by the very syndicate Nathan and Celeste partnered with five years ago. And based on our latest intel... he’s currently heading toward the main downtown tower to intercept Nathan himself.”
Emma’s heart hammered against her ribs. “My father is going to the tower? That’s suicide! Nathan and Celeste have armed private security guarding every floor!”
“Which is why we need to move fast,” Miller said. “Sit tight. My tactical unit is thirty seconds away from breaking the front gate of the estate. We’ll have you out in a minute.”
The call disconnected with a soft click.
Emma slipped the phone back into her pocket, shining her penlight around the damp stone cellar to find a place to wait. As the beam swept across the far corner of the room, illuminating a stack of old wooden crates marked CARVER IMPORT/EXPORT 1994, something caught her eye.
A fresh scrape mark on the stone floor.
Emma walked over to the crates, knelt down, and pushed the heaviest wooden box aside with her shoulder. Beneath it lay a secondary iron hatch set directly into the stone foundation—a hatch that wasn't on any of the mansion’s modern architectural blueprints.
She grabbed the rusted iron ring on the hatch and pulled upward with all her might.
With a grinding shriek of old metal and stone, the hatch gave way, revealing a dark, brick-lined subterranean tunnel that sloped downward into the absolute blackness of the earth.
It was an old utility and escape tunnel built during the Prohibition era, connecting the mansion directly to the riverbank half a mile away.

And based on the fresh footprints pressed into the damp soil inside the tunnel... someone had used it very recently.
Someone who didn't want to wait for the police to rescue them.
