Chapter 12 - The Ghost Returns to the Table

-12-

For three seconds, the executive boardroom was so quiet you could hear the hum of the overhead projector.

Nathan’s jaw dropped so low his lower lip trembled. The corporate papers slipped from his fingers, fluttering down like wounded birds onto the mahogany table. He stared at the doorway, his face turning the color of wet chalk, his eyes darting frantically between Emma and the man standing beside her.

“No,” Nathan whispered, his voice cracking into a high, hysterical panic. “No... that’s impossible. You’re dead. You died in the crash!”

Emma’s father walked slowly into the boardroom, his footsteps clicking rhythmically against the polished hardwood floor. He didn't raise his voice, but every syllable carried the weight of an absolute, crushing authority.

“Death is a very inconvenient rumor, Nathan,” her father said smoothly, stopping five feet from the head of the table. “Especially when you have forged signatures, falsified coroner reports, and forty million dollars in offshore money laundering to catch up on.”

Celeste reacted faster than Nathan. Her sophisticated composure shattered completely. She slammed her crystal glass down onto the table, shattering the stem, and leaped to her feet, pointing a shaking finger at Emma’s father.

“He’s an imposter!” Celeste screamed, her voice shrill and desperate as she looked around the stunned faces of the board members. “He’s a ghost, or a hired fraud! Security! Get these lunatics out of this building right now!”

None of the security guards outside could answer her call—they were currently tied up on the floor forty feet away.

Instead, the frosted glass double doors pushed open once more.

Detective Miller stepped into the boardroom, flanked by four federal agents in dark tactical vests, their badges gleaming under the penthouse lights.

“You don't need security, Ms. Vance,” Detective Miller said loudly, holding up an arrest warrant as he walked straight toward the head of the table. “You need a very good defense attorney.”

Celeste staggered backward, her champagne silk dress catching on the edge of the leather executive chair as she tripped and fell hard against the wall.

Nathan tried to back away, his hands gripping the edge of the mahogany table. “This is a mistake,” he stammered, looking frantically around the table at the board members who were now standing up in shock and disgust. “This is a hostile coup! They forged documents! They’re trying to ruin the company!”

“The only thing being ruined, Nathan, is your prison sentence,” Emma said clearly, stepping forward and placing her hand on the table right in front of him.

She looked down at the forged proxy transfer papers he had spent months preparing—the very documents designed to strip her of her birthright before Friday midnight.

“You wanted my shares so badly, Nathan?” Emma asked, her voice cold and sweet as poison. “Why don't you check the signature again?”

Nathan looked down at the papers. For the first time, he noticed something different about the transfer deed resting on top of the stack.

It wasn't his forged copy.

It was the original, master revocation deed signed by the primary founder of Carver Holdings five minutes ago in the underground parking garage—a deed that instantly restored one hundred percent of voting control back to Emma and her father, rendering every contract Nathan and Celeste had signed over the past five years legally null and void.

Nathan dropped into his executive chair like a man who had just been shot.
