Chapter 9 - THE PATRIARCH'S PROPOSAL

-9

The heavy oak doors of my executive suite swung open, and Arthur Kane stepped into the room.

Up close, the older Kane was a striking, formidable figure. In his late sixties, with sharply tailored silver hair, piercing gray eyes identical to his son’s, and a razor-sharp bespoke suit that screamed old-money dominance, he carried an aura of absolute, terrifying command. He didn't look like a man mourning a family crisis; he looked like a general inspecting enemy lines after a decisive victory.

He stopped a few feet from my desk, his cold eyes sweeping over the minimalist luxury of the office before locking onto mine.

"Mrs. Hayes," Arthur greeted, his voice a gravelly, aristocratic baritone that commanded immediate attention. "Or should I say, Chief Creative Officer Hayes. Congratulations on your promotion. It takes a remarkably strategic mind to climb out of an alleyway and land in the corner office in less than thirty days."

I didn't stand up. I didn't invite him to sit. I simply folded my hands on the desk, holding his piercing gaze with absolute, unyielding calm.

"Thank you, Mr. Kane," I replied smoothly. "Though I’d argue my promotion had less to do with strategy and more to do with the fact that your son lacks basic impulse control and professional boundaries."

A faint, humorless smirk touched the corners of Arthur’s mouth. He pulled out the leather chair opposite my desk, uninvited, and sat down smoothly, resting his hands on the gold-plated handle of his cane.

"You're entirely right about Adrian, Mrs. Hayes," Arthur admitted with chilling frankness, shocking me slightly with his utter lack of paternal defense. "He’s arrogant, impulsive, and blinded by his own sense of inherited entitlement. I spent thirty years grooming him to take over Kane Global, and the moment he faced a tiny bit of corporate pressure, he threw a temper tantrum like a spoiled child."

"If you're here to beg for a family discount on the civil lawsuit, Mr. Kane, you're wasting your time," I said, my voice hardening. "Your son assaulted an employee on company property. He will face the legal consequences of his actions."

"I'm not here to beg, Mrs. Hayes," Arthur said, leaning forward, resting his forearms on the desk. "I'm here to offer you a business proposition."

I raised an eyebrow. "A business proposition."

"As of this morning, the board of directors at Kane Global has officially voted to strip Adrian of his executive vice presidency, revoke his voting shares, and remove him from the corporate succession line," Arthur stated coldly, as if announcing a minor inventory adjustment. "He is done. Finished. He will spend the rest of his life living off a modest trust fund in Europe, completely cut off from the family empire."

I stared at the billionaire patriarch, the sheer ruthlessness of his corporate execution leaving me momentarily speechless. He had severed his own son from the family tree without a second thought the moment Adrian became a liability.

"That's a very thorough family pruning, Mr. Kane," I noted dryly. "Still, I don't see what this has to do with me."

"It has everything to do with you," Arthur corrected, sliding a thick, gold-embossed legal document across the desk toward me. "With Adrian out of the picture, Kane Global needs a strategic creative partner to anchor our upcoming luxury branding restructuring in North America. We need a firm with absolute integrity, fearless vision, and a leader who cannot be bought, bullied, or intimidated."

I looked down at the document. It was a multi-million-dollar exclusive master services agreement between Kane Global Holdings and Apex Strategic Advisory—the high-end corporate consulting firm Marcus Vance and I had quietly partnered with years ago.

"You want to award Kane Global’s primary North American branding contract to my firm," I said slowly, looking back up into his cold, calculating eyes.

"I want to partner with the most dangerous, effective strategist currently operating in Manhattan," Arthur corrected smoothly, a thin, approving smile touching his lips. "And as a secondary condition of this agreement, my legal team will quietly facilitate a comprehensive, out-of-court financial settlement for your civil lawsuit against Adrian—a sum substantial enough to ensure that you and your daughter never have to worry about financial security for the rest of your lives. In exchange... you drop the criminal battery charges against my son."

The silence in the executive suite became absolute.

It was a classic Kane family power play: weaponize a massive financial windfall to make a criminal problem disappear, trading justice for corporate pragmatism.

I looked at the multi-million-dollar contract, then down at my hands—the same hands that had been dragged across a wet alleyway floor just weeks ago.
