Chapter 4 - THE GHOST OF THE PAST

-4

The conference room of Vance & Sterling Corporate Law smelled of aged leather, expensive espresso, and the quiet, crushing weight of impending legal warfare.

I sat at the polished mahogany table, wearing a high-necked black turtleneck that couldn't completely hide the faint, yellowish-purple shadow blooming across my left cheekbone. Across from me sat Marcus Vance, his silver hair neatly combed, his sharp gray eyes scanning a thick dossier spread out before him. Beside him was Sarah Jenkins, a fierce, no-nonsense senior associate specializing in corporate torts and executive misconduct.

"Let's review the timeline," Marcus said, tapping his pen against the wooden table. "Yesterday morning, you brought your daughter into the Blackwell & Reed office because your childcare fell through. Your daughter, being six, wandered into Adrian Kane's private executive suite and made an innocent, albeit bizarre, remark about him being tall and handsome enough to be her daddy."

"Yes," I confirmed, adjusting the cuffs of my blazer. "And instead of laughing it off or calling security to escort us out politely, Kane immediately jumped to the conclusion of corporate espionage. He assumed I was a plant sent by a rival firm to sabotage the upcoming Kane Global acquisition vote."

"Because he’s paranoid," Sarah chimed in, sliding a printed financial audit report toward me. "Kane Global is in the middle of a hostile takeover of Blackwell & Reed. The board is deeply divided. Kane needs a unanimous vote next month to push the merger through and consolidate his family's absolute control over the firm. If there's any scandal—any hint of instability, executive volatility, or workplace violence—the board will block the vote, and Kane’s father will strip him of his succession rights."

I blinked, processing the high-stakes corporate chess game Sarah was laying out. "So his violent reaction wasn't just arrogance... it was panic."

"Absolute panic," Marcus nodded, a predatory grin spreading across his face. "Adrian Kane is a man who operates on total, unyielding control. The moment your daughter penetrated his inner sanctum, he felt exposed. And when people like him feel exposed, they lash out with overwhelming force. Which is the single greatest mistake he could have possibly made."

Marcus tapped the dossier, opening it to a certified medical report and a high-resolution photograph of the bruised handprint left on my arm by the security guards.

"We aren't just filing a standard workplace wrongful termination suit, Elena," Marcus said, his voice dropping into a deadly serious register. "We are filing a multi-million-dollar civil lawsuit for assault, battery, intentional infliction of emotional distress, and gender-based workplace discrimination. Furthermore, we are attaching an emergency injunction motion to freeze Kane Global’s acquisition proceedings at Blackwell & Reed until the criminal battery charges are formally investigated by the NYPD."

My breath hitched. "Criminal charges? Are we going to press charges for the slap?"

"Damn right we are," Sarah said fiercely. "There are hallway security cameras at Blackwell & Reed. We’ve already subpoenaed the unedited footage through an ex-parte court order before their IT department had a chance to scrub it. Adrian Kane physically assaulted an employee on company property in front of witnesses. In the state of New York, a billionaire’s money doesn't buy out a battery charge when it's caught in 4K resolution."

I looked down at the dossier, a slow, vindictive thrill washing away the lingering trauma of the previous day. Adrian Kane had wanted to crush me into the pavement of a dirty alleyway. He had wanted to leave me voiceless and powerless.

He had no idea he had just handed me the wrecking ball.

"File the motions, Marcus," I said, my voice steady, clear, and cold as ice. "File every single one of them. Let's see how well the Marble Duke handles a deposition when he's sitting across from the woman he thought he could throw away."
