Chapter 9 - THE VENEER OF CIVILIZATION

The secure line hummed with static as Daniel’s panicked breathing echoed through the receiver in the Swiss chalet's study.
"Sebastian? How... how are you calling me? The strike team confirmed the perimeter breach—"
"Your little commando squad is currently sleeping off concussions on my foyer floor," Sebastian interrupted, his voice dropping into a razor-sharp whisper that made the secure line crackle. "And before you try to invent another lie, your lead operative gave you up, Daniel. He told me everything about your little executive coup."
A heavy, suffocating silence hung on the line for three agonizing seconds. Then, Daniel’s nervous chuckle broke through the speaker—forced, brittle, and drenched in sudden, desperate terror.
"You're... you're bluffing," Daniel stammered, his bravado rapidly dissolving. "If my men failed, they would never give up my name. They're professionals!"
"They were professionals until I put a gun to their heads and reminded them whose payroll they were actually on," Sebastian lied smoothly, fabricating the intimidation factor with chilling perfection. "Listen to me very carefully, Daniel. You thought you could use my grandfather’s obsession with the family legacy to do your dirty work, and then pick the bones clean when the dust settled. But you made a fatal mistake."
"What... what mistake?" Daniel gasped.
"You touched my children," Sebastian said, every word dropping like a lead weight. "By sunrise tomorrow, I am transmitting the complete, unredacted corporate embezzlement ledgers—including the slush funds you used to finance your private black-ops teams—to the federal grand jury in Chicago and every major financial news network in the country. Your assets will be frozen, your accounts seized, and you will spend the rest of your natural life in a maximum-security federal penitentiary."
"No! Sebastian, you can't do that!" Daniel shrieked, his voice pitching up into absolute hysteria. "We're family! We share the same blood! If you destroy me, you destroy the entire foundation of Vale Industries!"
"Vale Industries burned to the ground the moment you decided to put a hit on a four-year-old child," Sebastian said, his voice flat, dead, and entirely devoid of mercy. "Pack a bag, cousin. The federal marshals will be knocking on your penthouse door by noon tomorrow."
Sebastian terminated the call, tapping the screen to sever the connection permanently. He stood alone in the dimly lit study, the storm outside still howling against the reinforced glass, but the cold knot in his chest had finally begun to loosen.
He walked down the hallway to the West Wing, approached the reinforced steel door of the panic room, and tapped a specific four-digit security code into the electronic keypad.
Click.
The heavy steel door slid open with a soft hiss.
Inside the bunker, the soft ambient lighting illuminated three little sleeping angels curled up on a plush velvet sofa, while Chloe sat reading a paperback book by the corner lamp.
When I looked up from the floor, my eyes locking onto Sebastian standing in the doorway with no weapon in his hand and a quiet, resolute calm on his face, I knew instantly.
"Is it over?" I whispered, scrambling to my feet so I wouldn't wake Noah, who was resting his head in my lap.
"For tonight," Sebastian said, walking into the bunker and dropping down beside us on the carpet. He reached out, his hand gently resting over Noah’s little leg, before his gray eyes shifted up to meet mine. "Daniel is finished. Grandfather’s control is broken. Tomorrow morning, when the storm clears, we are catching a private flight back to the US—not as fugitives, but as owners."
I stared at him, the weight of four years of fear, isolation, and survival slowly lifting from my shoulders.

"And what happens when we land?" I asked softly.
"We take back our lives," Sebastian promised, leaning in to press a tender, lingering kiss to my forehead. "And nobody will ever be able to touch us again."
