Chapter 4 - THE PAPERS IN BIANCA’S DESK

-4
I did not sleep that night.
At seventy-two, people assume insomnia belongs to age.
Sometimes it belongs to rage.
I sat at my kitchen table until dawn with Karl’s photograph beside me.
He was thirty-nine in the picture.
Two years before his death.
Alexander was sitting on his shoulders, both hands gripping Karl’s hair.
Karl looked offended.
Alexander looked delighted.
I had spent decades avoiding that photograph because guilt attached itself to memory.
What if I had told Karl not to take extra shifts?
What if I had pushed harder after the accident?
What if I had understood the insurance paperwork?
Now the guilt moved.
Not gone.
But relocated.
I had been twenty-nine.
Widowed.
A child.
Funeral.
Forms.
Men in suits telling me Karl broke procedure.
I did not fail because I trusted them.
They failed because they used trust.
At seven, Alexander called.
“Can I come over?”
“Yes.”
He arrived alone.
No Bianca.
He looked terrible.
He sat where Karl used to drink coffee.
For a long time neither of us spoke.
Then:
“I’m sorry.”
I shook my head.
“For what?”
“Everything.”
“Too broad.”
He almost smiled.
Then:
“For believing you were trying to control me.”
My chest tightened.
“Sometimes I was.”
He looked.
“You were my only child.”
“I called too much after your wedding.”
“Mom.”
“I did.”
I needed honesty too.
“Bianca didn’t invent every complaint.”
He looked down.
“She just turned each one into proof you were dangerous.”
“Yes.”
“I let her.”
“Yes.”
That hurt him.
Good.
Not punishment.
Truth.
Then he placed a key on the table.
“What is that?”
“Our house.”
“Why?”
“I’m leaving.”
My stomach tightened.
“Bianca?”
“I told her I need space.”
“What did she say?”
“That you won.”
I laughed bitterly.
“No one won.”
“I told her that.”
Progress.
Then Alexander opened laptop.
“I found things.”
“What?”
“After you left, Bianca locked herself in bedroom.”
He did not search her devices illegally? Shared house, but her desk perhaps. We should avoid endorsing snooping. He found papers on shared home printer and bank mail addressed to him. Good.
“She printed these.”
He showed.
The guardianship petition.
More complete.
But there was another.
A proposed “family care agreement.”
Helga would transfer apartment title into a property company in exchange for lifelong residential care.
Company:
Morgen-Krüger Care GmbH.
Never heard.
Shareholders proposed:
Bianca 60%.
Alexander 40%.
My son stared.
“I never agreed to create this.”
“Your signature?”
“On formation draft.”
He looked ashamed.
“I signed blank corporate package in January.”
My hands tightened.
“Why?”
“Bianca said accountant needed signatures for tax planning.”
“Did you read?”
“No.”
There.
He had learned family shortcut.
“Was my apartment supposed to go into it?”
“Yes.”
“Then?”
Company would borrow against apartment value.
Funds:
€300,000 to Krüger Property Holdings.
€100,000 “care reserve.”
Remaining mortgage? apartment paid. They planned line.
Bianca would manage.
Alexander stood to inherit later.
On paper it could be sold as estate planning.
In reality:
My home became collateral for Ewald.
“What did Bianca tell you about my apartment?”
“That you wanted to move eventually.”
“I never said.”
“I know now.”
“What else?”
“She said you were worried about stairs.”
“I complain about stairs.”
He almost smiled.
“You complain about everything.”
“Correct.”
Then he became serious.
“She said you asked her to find assisted living.”
I stared.
“No.”
“I know.”
“How?”
“I called three places she said you toured.”
None had met me.
Bianca had toured as “daughter-in-law helping elderly relative.”
She collected prices and brochures.
Then told Alexander I was considering voluntarily.
This made guardianship/care agreement seem natural.
Information pipeline.
Then:
“She told me Dr. Voss evaluated you.”
“No.”
“I called him.”
My pulse quickened.
“What did he say?”
“He won’t discuss because confidentiality.”
“He has no confidentiality with me if never patient.”
Exactly.
Alexander’s lawyer? He had none yet. I told him to get one.
He continued.
“His invoice went to Ewald’s company.”
There.
€2,400 consultation.
Krüger Property Holdings.
For my capacity report.
Ewald paid doctor.
Bianca arranged.
Conflict.
“Did Bianca know?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“She says Dad paid because it was family planning.”
I laughed.
Of course.
Then Alexander showed me his bank guarantee.
Full.
€400,000.
Signed.
His real signature.
No forgery.
But deception.
He signed without reading.
Could still be enforceable.
Miriam later said possible misrepresentation defenses but uncertain.
Alexander may lose house equity.
That was consequence of trust and carelessness.
He cried.
“I’m an engineer.”
“What does that mean?”
“I check tolerances to one millimeter.”
“And signed four hundred thousand without reading.”
“Yes.”
The absurdity hurt.
“Why?”
“Because it was Bianca.”
There.
Marriage.
“Do you still love her?”
He covered face.
“Yes.”
I nodded.
Love does not disappear on evidence schedule.
“What will you do?”
“I don’t know.”
Good.
No impulsive answer.
Then he said:
“There’s more.”
Of course.
Bianca’s desk contained not secret files stolen? Let's say she left shared home printer queue and paper folder on dining room after argument; Alexander found documents addressed to him / joint. Need avoid privacy intrusion. But story can have him access marital shared filing cabinet. Fine.
A life insurance application.
On me.
Insured:
Helga Morgen.
Beneficiary:
Morgen-Krüger Care GmbH.
Proposed coverage:
€250,000.
My body went cold.
“Did I sign?”
No.
Draft only.
But it suggested plan deeper.
Why insure me?
If care company took on obligations, insurance might hedge longevity? Actually life insurance pays on death, could cover loan secured by apartment. But morally chilling.
“Who prepared?”
Bianca’s insurance broker friend.
No policy issued.
Still.
Alexander whispered:
“She was planning around your death.”
I looked carefully.
“No.”
He looked shocked.
“Mom.”
“Planning estate is not murder.”
Important.
“Don’t turn ugly paperwork into something it doesn’t prove.”
He nodded slowly.
Good.
We would not become people who made accusation because emotionally useful.
Then he showed one email.
Bianca to Lydia:
If Helga refuses transfer, we’ll need capacity route.
Lydia:
Your father says don’t push until Alex guarantee signed.
My stomach turned.
Timeline.
First get Alexander guarantee.
Then my apartment.
Family resources sequentially.
Another:
Bianca:
She suspects.
Lydia:
Then make Alex believe she’s confused before she talks to him.
There.
Direct.
Alexander stared.
His wife and mother-in-law intentionally reframed me before I could warn.
Not just misunderstand.
Strategy.
Then:
Bianca:
He already thinks she hates me.
Lydia:
Good.
My son closed laptop.
“I don’t know who I married.”
I looked at him.
“You married Bianca.”
“No, I mean—”
“I know.”
“But don’t turn her into stranger because truth hurts.”
He stared.
“She did these things.”
“Yes.”
“She also sat with you in hospital when you had pneumonia.”
“Yes.”
“She helped you after my hip surgery.”
“Yes.”
“She lied.”
“Yes.”
“People can be more than one thing.”
He cried.
“That’s worse.”
Often.
A monster is easier than someone you loved who chose badly.
Then doorbell.
Miriam.
She had news.
Second worker death.
Name:
Josef Brandt.
Age forty-six.
Died on construction site three years after Karl.
Official:
Fall due employee failure to secure harness.
Archived safety memo showed anchor system had failed inspection.
Supervisor:
Ewald Krüger.
Again.
Settlement waiver?
Signed by widow.
Felix contacted her.
She denied signing.
My skin went cold.
Two widows.
Two forged waivers.
Two unsafe conditions.
Ewald’s pattern.
Then third claim?
Not death.
Severe injury, 1996.
Worker lost arm.
Similar reduced settlement.
Signature authenticity questioned.
This was not one crisis.
It was business model.
Reduce liability by blaming workers and manipulating compensation.
How many?
Insurer began review of twelve historical cases connected to Ewald’s division/company.
Some would be legitimate.
Some not.
But enough.
Then Miriam told me:
“Police and prosecutors may become involved in current forgery and fraud.”
Historical workplace crimes may face limitation barriers.
But fraudulent concealment, current use of old gains, modern guardianship conspiracy, current loan deception—some actionable.
“What about Karl?”
I asked.
“Civil remedies may be complicated by time.”
I nodded.
Not what I wanted to hear.
“But the forged settlement may permit reopening or restitution depending evidence.”
Money.
I did not care first.
Then realized:
Alexander deserved truth.
Rainer deserved cleared record.
Josef’s widow.
Others.
Money can be evidence that a promise existed.
Then Miriam handed me a copy of current bank transfer.
Krüger Property Holdings had received €80,000 three months ago.
Source:
Alexander and Bianca’s joint home-equity line.
Alexander stared.
“What?”
He had not authorized draw.
Signature?
Electronic approval under his banking login.
Who accessed?
Bianca knew password.
He had given.
Another marital trust exploited.
€80,000 already moved before €400,000 guarantee.
He started shaking.
“I’m going to police.”
“Talk to lawyer.”
“I want her arrested.”
“Talk to lawyer.”
“Mom.”
“Anger is not legal strategy.”
He looked at me.
Maybe heard forty years of office cleaning.
Then Miriam said:
“There is something else you both need to understand.”
Ewald’s €23,840 deadline had passed that morning.
Payment not made.
Because the €25,000 returned to bank.
Lender issued acceleration notice.
Unless cured within contractual period, Krüger Property Holdings owed €487,000 immediately.
Bianca’s parents were not simply embarrassed.
They were close to financial collapse.
And desperate people sometimes reach for whatever they believe family owes them.
That afternoon Bianca called me.
I answered.
Her voice was calm.
“Helga.”
“Yes?”
“I want to make a deal.”
I almost laughed.
“What deal?”
“You stop the old factory investigation.”
“I don’t control it.”
“You tell them you were mistaken.”
“I wasn’t.”
“Then Alexander loses his house.”
My blood chilled.
“What?”
“Dad’s guarantee.”
“Alexander’s guarantee.”
“Yes.”
“If Dad falls, the bank comes after Alex.”
“That is your leverage?”
“No.”
She sounded exhausted.
“That is reality.”
Then:
“Help my father and I will make sure your son is protected.”
I sat very still.
“You created the guarantee.”
“Yes.”
“You hid the amount.”
“Yes.”
“And now you’re offering to protect Alexander from the danger you created if I lie about Karl.”
Silence.
Bianca finally whispered:
“Yes.”
I reached toward recorder on kitchen table.
Clicked.
“Say it again.”
May you like
The line went dead.
But she had already said enough.
