Chapter 10 - LYDIA TELLS BIANCA THE TRUTH

-10

Lydia waited until Bianca’s plea hearing was scheduled before telling her daughter the full story.

Maybe she feared losing her.

Maybe she finally understood she already had.

She asked Bianca, Alexander, and me to meet.

I almost said no.

Then Lydia said:

“This is about Bianca’s childhood.”

Not mine.

I went.

Neutral apartment.

Lydia’s new place.

Small.

Secondhand furniture.

No glass walls.

She served coffee in mismatched cups.

Ewald would have hated it.

Bianca sat across from mother.

Alexander beside but not touching.

They were still separated.

Therapy.

Uncertain.

Lydia began.

“When you were seven, your father almost went to prison.”

Bianca stared.

“What?”

Not Karl case.

Another.

1999 tax investigation.

After old company sale, Ewald hid management bonus income through shell account.

Lydia discovered.

Authorities questioned.

Ewald blamed accountant.

Charges dropped after settlement.

But that year, Lydia considered leaving.

She took Bianca to sister’s house.

Ewald threatened custody.

Said Lydia was unstable.

There.

Same tactic again.

He had a psychiatrist friend write concern about Lydia’s anxiety.

Not formal diagnosis.

Still.

Lydia returned.

Bianca remembered only:

Mom was sick.

Dad saved family.

Her childhood story inverted too.

Bianca looked pale.

“You weren’t sick?”

“I was terrified.”

“Dad told me you had breakdown.”

“I had panic attacks.”

“Because?”

“Because he was threatening me.”

Silence.

This mattered.

Bianca had grown up believing father was stable, mother fragile.

So when Helga “declined,” pattern familiar.

The strong man manages women who become emotional around money.

Lydia had modeled compliance.

Ewald had narrated.

Then:

“He told you Helga was jealous of us.”

Bianca cried.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because she cleaned.”

Lydia covered face.

“I should have stopped him.”

“You laughed.”

Bianca remembered.

At family dinner, Ewald joked:

Some people clean success; some create it.

They all laughed.

Including Lydia.

Including teen Bianca.

Alexander maybe later heard versions.

Class contempt normalized.

Then Lydia said:

“Karl’s settlement paid for our first apartment deposit.”

My chest stopped.

“What?”

I had not known.

Ewald received performance bonus from claims reserve restoration.

He used part as deposit on apartment where Lydia/Bianca lived.

So Bianca’s childhood home directly linked.

Lydia carried guilt.

She knew after marriage, not at time? Let's say she knew bonus derived partly.

“I knew money came from bonus.”

“Did you know Karl?”

“Yes.”

There.

My grief sharpened.

Not only wealth later.

Their first home.

While Alexander and I moved to smaller rental because I could not afford ours after Karl.

Parallel.

Bianca stared at mother.

“My bedroom?”

Lydia cried.

“Yes.”

Bianca stood, walked to window.

“I don’t want to know this.”

“I know.”

“Why tell me now?”

“Because hiding made you like him.”

Harsh.

Bianca turned.

Lydia continued.

“Not because you are him.”

“But because I taught you love means conceal what hurts family.”

Yes.

Bianca cried.

Alexander looked down.

He had learned other version too:

Love means silence to avoid conflict.

Families transmit strategies.

Then Lydia handed bank receipt from 1992.

Bonus.

Deposit.

No need.

Evidence.

Bianca tore? No. She looked.

Then she said:

“I want to repay Helga.”

I shook head.

“No.”

She looked.

“Why?”

“You cannot repay childhood home.”

“Then what?”

“Stop making money your apology.”

Silence.

That was Ewald pattern too.

Money fixes.

No.

“Change behavior.”

Bianca sat.

“What behavior?”

“Tell truth before you know outcome.”

That was hardest.

Lydia nodded.

Then she told one more truth.

She had suspected Bianca was planning guardianship before Bianca told.

Why not stop?

Because Ewald promised:

After refinance, we’ll tear papers up.

Temporary.

Again.

If fixed, no harm.

Lydia stayed silent.

That silence made current harm.

She apologized to me.

Specific.

“I knew you were competent.”

“Yes.”

“I knew report was false.”

“Yes.”

“I did not know Ewald planned to use old claim against you.”

“Okay.”

“I knew apartment money would save us.”

“Yes.”

“I wanted it.”

There.

Personal.

Not only husband.

She wanted house.

Lifestyle.

No divorce.

Comfort.

“Thank you.”

For truth.

Then Bianca asked:

“Mom, did you ever love Dad?”

Lydia looked shocked.

“Yes.”

“Do you now?”

She thought.

“Yes.”

“That’s impossible.”

“No.”

I spoke.

They looked.

“It isn’t.”

Bianca stared.

I continued.

“Love is feeling. Trust is judgment. Staying is decision.”

Three separate.

You can love and leave.

Love and prosecute.

Love and refuse.

I had loved Karl, trusted.

Different.

Lydia loved Ewald, no longer trusted, left.

Bianca loved Alexander and had betrayed.

Alexander loved Bianca and uncertain stay.

No simple.

Then Alexander asked Lydia:

“Do you think Bianca can change?”

I groaned.

Everyone laughed unexpectedly.

“You too?”

He smiled sheepishly.

Lydia answered:

“Yes.”

Bianca cried.

Then Lydia added:

“That doesn’t mean he has to stay.”

Good.

Alexander stared.

“Why is every woman useless?”

We laughed again.

This family needed humor.

Then legal outcomes moved.

Dr. Voss received professional sanction, withdrew report, paid portion legal costs through insurer. Not criminal.

Bank settled Alexander/bianca transfer dispute.

Bianca plea:

18 months suspended sentence/probation, restitution for unauthorized €80k (her share), 300 hours community service? Fine, community service and financial restrictions.

She lost professional reputation but kept job? Employer reduced role, then she resigned and started work at community housing nonprofit? Perhaps later.

Ewald case continued.

Historical evidence used for sentencing/current fraud but statute limits older charges.

He pleaded to current fraud? Maybe went trial. User wants secret and dramatic ending. We'll do trial chapter 13.

Before that, insurer restitution panel.

I received formal settlement offer €522,000 plus correction/apology.

Alexander’s educational loss separately €95,000 maybe paid directly to him? Since education fund was for child. He got €110k. Interesting.

He said:

“Mom, you paid my school. This belongs to you.”

Legally beneficiary him.

“What do you want?”

“To give it.”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because then we repeat.”

He stared.

“Use it.”

For what?

He paid off remaining bank settlement.

Then donated portion to worker safety scholarship in Karl’s name.

His choice.

Good.

My €522k.

I accepted.

First deposit.

I stared at bank app.

Never had so much.

At 72.

What did I do?

Nothing for month.

Money can wait.

Then I replaced refrigerator.

Old one noisy.

€700.

Alexander laughed.

“You got half million and bought refrigerator.”

“It was broken.”

Good.

Then I paid Miriam fees not covered.

Set aside.

Building elevator? Cooperative said impossible.

I looked at new apartment? Maybe later.

Then Marta and Mehmet settlements too.

Group created "Karl Morgen Worker Safety Archive" perhaps not yet.

I wanted truth accessible.

But no vanity.

Could fund legal aid for workplace injury families.

I contributed €100k anonymously initially.

Alexander convinced name matters for history? Maybe "Morgen Fund for Worker Families" named Karl, not Helga. Fine.

Then Mother’s Day approached next year.

Alexander asked plans.

I said:

“No cash.”

He laughed.

“Understood.”

Bianca maybe not invited yet.

Good.

Then one night I got call from prison? Ewald on bail pending trial, not prison. He requested via lawyer to speak to Lydia. Not me.

But sent notarized statement:

Karl Morgen did not bypass safety procedures.

Why now?

Plea negotiations.

Still.

Could be first time he publicly cleared.

I read.

No joy.

Then line:

I made decisions after accident that deprived Helga Morgen and Alexander Morgen of compensation they were entitled to receive.

There.

Official admission.

I cried.

Maybe trial no need if plea. But user wants strong. Could have current fraud trial because plea on old statement not enough. Perhaps he attempts deal but prosecutors reject or he refuses full plea.

Let's keep: he signed statement as civil settlement but pleaded not guilty criminal charges, hoping to limit.

Contradiction.

He admitted some civil acts but denied criminal intent.

Trial still.

Then Bianca called me after seeing statement.

“Dad says he only signed because lawyers forced.”

I asked:

“What do you think?”

“I think he still believes confession is transaction.”

May you like

Exactly.

Maybe he will only understand when outcome no longer in his control.
