Chapter 6 - THE UNBROKEN LINE

The federal indictment against Alistair Sterling was unsealed three days later, sending shockwaves through the financial markets and political circles of Chicago. Unlike Arthur’s trial, which was bogged down by municipal technicalities, Alistair’s case was an airtight federal prosecution built on military-grade digital forensics, recovered adoption ledgers, and decades of hidden paper trails.
Within a week, Sterling Enterprises was placed into court-ordered receivership, its assets frozen and earmarked for municipal restitution and worker compensation funds—including the exact backpay owed to every single employee who had ever been cheated by the family’s corporate machine, stretching all the way back to the workers at the Sterling Bistro.
On a bright, crisp Saturday morning, the sun beat down warmly on the grand marble steps of Chicago City Hall. But this time, there were no campaign banners, no roaring crowds, and no television camera crews broadcasting a staged political rally.
Instead, a quiet, peaceful gathering of family stood beneath the limestone pillars.
Mom wore a simple, elegant emerald-green coat, her hair styled neatly, holding a bouquet of fresh white lilies. Vincent stood beside her, his arm wrapped securely around her shoulders, wearing a tailored navy suit. Tommy was tinkering with a brand-new tablet, while I stood right in the center, my red hoodie zipped up against the morning breeze.
Walking toward us up the grand marble steps was Julian Kane—our long-lost cousin who had spent twelve years deep inside the international intelligence grid, and who had quietly coordinated the federal logistics behind Alistair’s takedown.
Julian stopped in front of us, offering a warm, genuine smile. He reached out, gently embracing Mom.
"Welcome home, Elena," Julian whispered softly.
Mom closed her eyes, a peaceful sigh escaping her lips. "Thank you, Julian. For everything."
Julian turned to Vincent, shaking his hand firmly. "You handled the Chicago front brilliantly, Vinny. The federal prosecutors didn't even have to break a sweat."
"We made a good team, cousin," Vincent replied, a proud smile touching his lips. "Though I think the MVP of this operation was our little accountant here."
Julian turned his gaze toward me, raising an eyebrow with an amused, approving smirk. "Ah, yes. The girl who audited multi-million-dollar corruption rings with a box of coloring pencils."
I puffed out my chest, trying to look as professional as possible. "I’ll have you know my accounting methods are entirely rigorous. In fact, I'm still waiting on my backpay for the coloring pencils."
Everyone laughed—a rich, booming sound that echoed off the limestone facade of City Hall, drowning out the ghosts of the past and welcoming the dawn of a brand new day.

We walked down the marble steps together, stepping into the waiting black town car that would take us back to the KANE estate—not as trespassers, not as ghosts, but as the rightful heirs of a legacy built on truth, resilience, and unyielding family loyalty.
As the car pulled away from City Hall and merged into the bustling Chicago traffic, I looked out the window at the glittering skyline, knowing that the foundation was finally secure, and our story was forever our own.
