Chapter 5 - THE GAME OF BLUFFS

-5-

Ten seconds.

The digital countdown flashed silently in my mind as Alistair’s thumb hovered over the red button on the remote control. The four armed security contractors tightened their grips on their assault rifles, their laser sights painting red dots across Vincent’s chest and shoulders.

Mom stood frozen, her hands clenched into tight fists at her sides, staring at the server rack that held the fragile, digital thread of her true identity.

"Ten..." Alistair began counting down, his voice smooth, rhythmic, and dripping with sadistic confidence. "Nine... Eight..."

Vincent didn't panic. He didn't drop his gun. Instead, a slow, razor-sharp smirk crept across his face—the exact same expression he wore when he was about to crush a corporate rival during a hostile buyout.

"You really think I’d bring my family down into a subterranean vault without a contingency plan, cousin?" Vincent asked, his voice cutting through Alistair’s countdown like a knife.

Alistair paused at "Five," his thumb freezing over the button. His eyes narrowed. "What are you talking about?"

"Tommy," Vincent called out without breaking eye contact with Alistair.

"Got it, Mr. Kane!" Tommy shouted, his fingers hammering a rapid final sequence into his tablet.

With a loud, piercing beep, the massive smart-television screen mounted on the vault wall flickered to life. Instead of displaying a countdown, the screen broadcasted a live, crystal-clear video feed of the estate’s ground-floor security center upstairs—showing six of Alistair’s primary private guards currently tied up, gagged, and zip-tied to their chairs by an elite federal tactical team.

Standing right beside them, casually sipping a cup of coffee while holding an active federal search warrant, was Special Agent Marcus Vance of the FBI’s Public Corruption Unit.

Alistair’s face drained of color. The smug, untouchable smile vanished in an instant, replaced by a flash of genuine, unadulterated panic.

"How... how did the FBI get inside the perimeter?" Alistair choked out, his thumb slipping off the red button. "The gates were locked! The thermal sensors were offline!"

"They weren't offline, Alistair," Vincent said, taking a slow, deliberate step forward, forcing Alistair’s security guards to tense. "They were redirected. While you were busy gloating about your little remote control, Tommy was routing the estate’s master security feed straight to the federal magistrate who signed Arthur’s original arrest warrant."

On the television screen, Agent Vance looked directly into the camera lens, holding up an active radio transceiver.

"Vance to perimeter teams," Agent Vance’s voice echoed through the vault speakers. "All primary exits of the Sterling estate are secured. Federal marshals have arrived. Alistair Sterling, drop your weapon and step away from the civilian hostages immediately, or we breach the basement."

The four armed contractors panicked, their eyes darting between Alistair and the stairwell. One of them lowered his rifle, taking a hesitant step backward.

"Don't move!" Alistair roared at his own men, his voice cracking with desperation. He pointed the remote control directly at Vincent. "I’ll blow the server! I swear to God I’ll fry the hard drives right now!"

"Try it," I stepped forward from behind Vincent, my heart hammering against my ribs, holding up my phone. "Because while you were threatening my mother, Tommy wasn't just hacking your security feed. He was mirroring your server to three independent federal cloud servers in Washington, D.C."

I held the phone up so Alistair could see the flashing green upload progress bar: SYNC COMPLETE - 100% SECURED.

"The data is already in federal hands, Alistair," I said, my voice echoing off the stone walls with absolute, unyielding clarity. "You lost. Your secret server is useless."

Alistair stared at me, his chest heaving, his face twisting into an ugly, venomous mask of rage. He raised his thumb, pressing down on the red button with all his weight.

Click.

Nothing happened.

The server rack remained cool, the blue and green LED lights blinking steadily, completely unaffected by the remote control.

Tommy chuckled, leaning against the mahogany desk. "Turns out, wireless remotes don't work when you’re standing inside a lead-lined Faraday cage built by a paranoid nineteenth-century railroad tycoon. Nice try, though."

The four security guards dropped their weapons simultaneously, raising their hands in the air and stepping away from Alistair. They weren't paid enough to fight the FBI in a concrete tomb.

Alistair stood alone, his remote control completely useless, his face pale and contorted with fury. He looked at Vincent, then at Mom, realizing that the empire he had inherited and corrupted had finally been stripped away down to the bare stone.

The heavy iron doors of the vault swung wide open.

Special Agent Marcus Vance marched down the spiral stone staircase, flanked by four federal marshals in tactical gear. He walked straight up to Alistair, pulling a pair of heavy steel handcuffs from his belt.

"Alistair Sterling," Marcus announced, his voice ringing out with absolute federal authority. "You are under arrest for conspiracy, extortion, wire fraud, and the obstruction of federal justice. Turn around and put your hands behind your back."

May you like

Alistair didn't fight. He let out a long, shuddering breath, dropped his silver-tipped cane onto the concrete floor with a metallic clatter, and slowly turned around.

As the heavy steel handcuffs snapped around Alistair’s wrists, the nightmare that had haunted the Kane family for over two decades finally came to an end.
