PART 9— THE NIGHT OF THE VOTE

The six black SUVs stood motionless beyond the mansion gates.

Like chess pieces.

Waiting.

Watching.

Patient.

The men who emerged from them wore identical dark suits.

No visible weapons.

No raised voices.

No threats.

Yet they were more terrifying than soldiers.

Because true power rarely arrives with guns.

It arrives with certainty.

And every one of those men looked absolutely certain.

Elena stood at the library window.

Watching them.

The silver broken-crown insignia glinted beneath the afternoon sun.

The symbol of the Council.

The symbol Arthur had spent decades hiding from.

The symbol Sophia had spent her entire life trapped beneath.

And now...

They had come for her.

Julian stepped beside her.

"We need to leave."

Elena didn't answer.

Because for the first time since Arthur's call...

She understood something.

Running wouldn't help.

Not from people who had spent generations controlling nations.

Banks.

Corporations.

Governments.

The Council didn't lose track of people.

The Council erased them.

Then the mansion intercom chimed.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

The head of security appeared in the doorway.

His face was pale.

"Mrs. Vance."

Elena turned.

"They're requesting a meeting."

Silence.

"They claim it is mandatory."

Julian laughed.

Not because it was funny.

Because it was insane.

"Mandatory?"

The guard swallowed.

"They specifically asked for Elena."

Another pause.

"And they already know she's inside."

The room became quiet.

Because everyone understood the message.

The Council wasn't asking.

They were informing.

Then Elena surprised everyone.

Including herself.

"Let them in."

Julian immediately shook his head.

"No."

But Elena was already moving.

Because after years of being manipulated by hidden forces...

She was finished hiding.

Five minutes later.

The mansion's grand drawing room filled with silence.

The six visitors sat opposite Elena.

Their leader appeared to be in his seventies.

Silver-haired.

Perfect posture.

Cold eyes.

The kind of man who had spent a lifetime being obeyed.

He introduced himself simply.

"Sebastian Crowe."

The name meant nothing to Julian.

But Beatrice nearly dropped her tea.

Because she knew exactly who he was.

One of the Council's oldest members.

One of its founders.

One of the most powerful men on Earth.

Sebastian studied Elena calmly.

Then smiled.

Not warmly.

Professionally.

"As impressive as Arthur described."

Elena remained silent.

Sebastian nodded.

"Good."

A pause.

"You inherited his instincts."

Another pause.

"And Eleanor's intelligence."

The mention of her mother hit harder than expected.

Because until forty-eight hours ago...

Elena barely understood who Eleanor Blackwell truly was.

Now she was learning that her entire life had been built atop lies.

Sebastian folded his hands.

Then spoke the words everyone feared.

"The Council has reached a decision."

Silence.

"You are the rightful successor."

The room froze.

Julian stared.

"What?"

Sebastian ignored him.

His attention remained fixed on Elena.

"The vote occurs tomorrow night."

Another pause.

"Afterward, control transfers permanently."

Elena frowned.

"Why me?"

The old man's smile widened slightly.

Because apparently nobody had ever asked him that before.

Then he answered.

"Because every other candidate failed."

Silence.

"Some lacked intelligence."

"Some lacked discipline."

"Some lacked vision."

Another pause.

"Sophia lacked obedience."

The room went still.

Because suddenly everything became clearer.

Sophia wasn't rejected because she wasn't capable.

She was rejected because she refused to kneel.

Sebastian continued.

"But you..."

His eyes narrowed.

"...you rebuilt an empire from ruin."

Another pause.

"You eliminated corruption without destroying value."

Another.

"You inspire loyalty."

The old man leaned forward.

"And most importantly..."

Silence.

"You don't realize how powerful you are."

Elena felt sick.

Because it wasn't a compliment.

It was an evaluation.

The same way someone evaluates an acquisition.

An asset.

A tool.

A weapon.

Then Sebastian placed a black envelope on the table.

"This belongs to you."

Nobody touched it.

After a moment, Elena opened it.

Inside was a single document.

One page.

One number.

A bank account balance.

$184,000,000,000

One hundred eighty-four billion dollars.

Julian nearly stopped breathing.

Beatrice stared in horror.

Even Elena froze.

Because beneath the number appeared one sentence.

Accessible upon succession.

Silence swallowed the room.

Sebastian observed her carefully.

Waiting.

Watching.

Measuring.

Then he smiled.

"Most people say yes immediately."

Another pause.

"But you're not most people."

For the first time...

Elena smiled back.

And Sebastian's confidence faltered.

Just slightly.

Because the expression he saw wasn't temptation.

It wasn't greed.

It wasn't ambition.

It was understanding.

Finally.

Elena leaned forward.

And asked one question.

"Why was Sophia really taken?"

The room froze.

Sebastian didn't answer immediately.

Because unlike the other questions...

This one mattered.

Then he sighed.

A genuine sigh.

The first sign of humanity he'd shown.

"Sophia wasn't taken."

Silence.

"She volunteered."

Julian stood up instantly.

"That's impossible."

Sebastian nodded.

"I know."

Another pause.

"Because she was six years old."

The room turned cold.

Then Sebastian revealed the final secret.

The one secret nobody saw coming.

Sophia had discovered the truth years ago.

Long before Arthur disappeared.

Long before Elena found the files.

Long before the Council suspected anything.

And she spent twenty-five years secretly dismantling them from within.

Silence.

Every operation.

Every scandal.

Every financial leak.

Every collapse.

Sophia.

The entire time.

She wasn't the victim.

She was the rebellion.

Then Sebastian looked directly at Elena.

And whispered:

"She's the reason we're dying."

At that exact moment...

Every light in the mansion went dark.

Total darkness.

The security system died.

The alarms died.

The generators died.

Everything.

Then emergency lights activated.

Red.

Blood-red.

And a voice echoed through every speaker in the mansion.

A familiar voice.

Sophia.

Calm.

Steady.

Victorious.

"Good evening, Council."

Silence.

Then her next words shattered the room.

"The vote has been canceled."

Sebastian stood instantly.

For the first time...

The old man looked afraid.

Truly afraid.

Then Sophia laughed softly.

Because after twenty-five years...

Her plan had finally reached its end.

And somewhere beneath the mansion...

A countdown had already begun.

00:29:59
