PART 6 — THE WOMAN WHO SHOULD HAVE BEEN DEAD

The library became completely silent.
Elena gripped the phone so tightly her knuckles turned white.
"Hello, cousin."
The voice was calm.
Controlled.
Dangerously composed.
Julian immediately noticed the change in her expression.
"Who is it?"
Elena couldn't answer.
Not immediately.
Because deep inside, she already knew.
The voice continued.
"I assume you've found Arthur's letter."
A chill traveled down Elena's spine.
"Who is this?"
A soft laugh came through the speaker.
Elegant.
Cold.
"You already know."
Silence.
Then the woman finally said it.
"My name is Sophia."
The room froze.
Julian nearly dropped the photograph.
"No."
His voice cracked.
"No, that's impossible."
The woman laughed again.
"I've heard that my entire life."
Elena forced herself to remain calm.
"What do you want?"

A pause.
Then Sophia answered.
"To meet my family."
Another pause.
"And to destroy it."
The line went dead.
Silence swallowed the room.
Neither Elena nor Julian moved.
Because those six words carried something unmistakable.
Hatred.
Years of it.
Decades.
Julian slowly sat down.
His face had become pale.
"She's alive."
Not a question.
A realization.
Elena looked down at Arthur's letter again.
The more she read it, the worse it became.
Arthur had spent years secretly searching for Sophia.
Private investigators.
Hidden bank accounts.
International travel.
Everything.
And every search ended the same way.
Nothing.
No records.
No sightings.
No trace.
As if the child had vanished from existence.
Yet somehow she survived.
And now she was back.
The question was why.
Then Elena noticed something tucked beneath the final page.
A second envelope.
Smaller.
Hidden.
The seal had never been broken.
Arthur clearly intended it to remain undiscovered.
Until now.
Carefully she opened it.
Inside sat a single photograph.
The moment she saw it...
Her heart stopped.
Because the picture showed a young Sophia.
Perhaps sixteen years old.
Standing beside an elderly woman.
An elderly woman Elena recognized immediately.
Her grandmother.
Silence.
Complete silence.
Julian stared.
"What the hell?"
Elena felt dizzy.
Because according to her family history...
Her grandmother had never met the Vance family.
Ever.
Yet there she was.
Standing beside Sophia.
Smiling.
As if they had known each other for years.
Then Elena flipped the photograph over.
Three words were written on the back.
Protect her always.
Nothing else.
No explanation.
No signature.
Just those words.
Then another realization struck.
Her grandmother's maiden name.
Blackwell.
The same surname connected to the family that purchased Sophia.
Suddenly the puzzle pieces began moving.
Not fitting.
Moving.
Toward something much larger.
Then the library door opened.
A familiar face appeared.
Beatrice.
The former queen of the Vance empire.
The woman whose arrogance had nearly destroyed everything.
She froze the moment she saw the photograph.
Then all color drained from her face.
The reaction lasted less than a second.
But Elena saw it.
And that was enough.
"You knew."
Beatrice remained silent.
"You knew she was alive."
Julian stood.
His voice shaking.
"Mom."
Still silence.
Then Beatrice whispered:
"Burn it."
The room froze.
"What?"
Her eyes never left the photograph.
"Burn every document."
Julian stared in disbelief.
"Are you insane?"
For the first time in years...
Beatrice looked afraid.
Truly afraid.
Not angry.
Not arrogant.
Afraid.
Then she said something that changed everything.
"Sophia isn't coming back for revenge."
Silence.
"She's coming back for the inheritance."
Elena frowned.
"What inheritance?"
Beatrice immediately regretted speaking.
Everyone could see it.
But it was too late.
The secret had escaped.
Julian stepped forward.
"What inheritance?"
Beatrice slowly sat down.
As if decades of strength had suddenly abandoned her.
Then she revealed the truth.
Forty years earlier...
Before the Vance family became wealthy.
Before the mansions.
Before the empire.
Arthur Vance had made a deal.
A dangerous deal.
With the Blackwell family.
At the time the Blackwells were among the most powerful industrial dynasties in Europe.
And Arthur was desperate.
The Vance company was collapsing.
Bankruptcy was inevitable.
Then the Blackwells offered salvation.
Money.
Influence.
Protection.
In exchange for one thing.
Sophia.
The room became deathly silent.
Not adoption.
Not guardianship.
A contract.
An arrangement.
A transaction.
The little girl had been treated like an asset.
A bargaining chip.
A commodity.
Julian looked physically ill.
"You sold your daughter."
Beatrice closed her eyes.
"No."
A pause.
Then tears appeared.
The first Elena had ever seen.
"I thought I was saving her."
Silence.
Then she revealed the worst part.
Sophia wasn't chosen randomly.
She carried something valuable.
Something hidden within the Blackwell bloodline.
A legal claim.
A claim worth billions.
Arthur never knew.
Neither did Beatrice.
At least not initially.
Years later they discovered the truth.
By then it was too late.
Sophia had disappeared.
And the Blackwells refused all contact.
Then Elena asked the question nobody wanted to ask.
"How much?"
Beatrice stared at the floor.
Then whispered:
"Twenty-three billion dollars."
The room froze.
Julian nearly laughed.
Not because it was funny.
Because it was unbelievable.
Twenty-three billion.
Then Elena suddenly understood.
This wasn't a family dispute.
This wasn't revenge.
This wasn't closure.
This was war.
Then her phone vibrated.
A message.
Unknown sender.
One image attached.
Elena opened it.
And immediately felt her blood turn cold.
The photograph showed a private jet.
A luxury terminal.
And standing beside the aircraft...
Sophia.
Older now.
Elegant.
Beautiful.
Yet her eyes carried something unsettling.
The same cold intelligence Elena recognized in herself.
The same calculating focus.
The same relentless determination.
Then Elena noticed the man standing beside her.
And suddenly the entire room stopped breathing.
Because the man wasn't a stranger.
It was Arthur Vance.
Alive.
The message beneath the photograph contained only one sentence.
You buried the wrong patriarch.
Julian dropped the phone.
Because according to every official record...
His father had died three years ago.
And if Arthur Vance was still alive...
Then someone else had been buried in his place.
And whoever orchestrated it had fooled the entire world.
Including Beatrice.
Including Julian.
Including Elena.
And perhaps...
May you like
Arthur Vance himself.
