Chapter 12 - Return to Alderwyn

-12-

The drive back to Connecticut was nothing like their desperate escape two weeks prior. The sun was shining brightly, reflecting off the fresh layer of snow that blanketed the New England countryside. Julian drove with one hand casually resting on the steering wheel, his other hand firmly intertwined with Nora’s across the center console.

When the massive, wrought-iron gates of Alderwyn Manor finally came into view, Nora felt a sudden, sharp twist of anxiety in her chest. This place had been a house of horrors for her—the place where she had lost her father, the place where she had witnessed a murder, and the place where she had been humiliated and beaten by Camille Prescott.

As the car pulled to a stop in front of the grand marble staircase, Julian squeezed her hand.

“We don’t have to stay here,” Julian promised softly, sensing her hesitation. “If you want, I will sell this entire estate tomorrow and we’ll build a new house anywhere you choose. I just needed to come back one last time to put things right.”

Nora took a deep breath, looking up at the towering gothic windows of the manor. “No. We don’t run from it. We reclaim it.”

They stepped out of the car together. The massive oak doors opened, but this time, there was no line of terrified servants waiting to bow their heads. Julian had dismissed the entire compromised staff, keeping only a skeleton crew of trusted, deeply vetted individuals personally chosen by Marcus.

They walked into the grand foyer, the exact spot where Nora had dropped the champagne tray, where Camille had raised the riding crop, and where her life had irrevocably changed. The marble floors were pristine, the crystal chandeliers glittering warmly in the afternoon sun.

Julian didn’t stop in the foyer. He led Nora up the sweeping staircase, down the long, portrait-lined corridor of the west wing, until they reached a set of heavy, intricately carved double doors that had been locked for eighteen years.

Julian pulled a brass key from his pocket. He unlocked the doors and pushed them open.

Helena Hawthorne’s private bedroom had been preserved like a tomb. Dust sheets covered the elegant vintage furniture, and the air smelled faintly of lavender and old paper. Julian walked over to the massive bay windows, pulling the heavy velvet drapes back to let the bright winter sunlight flood the room for the first time in nearly two decades.

He walked to the vanity mirror, where a framed photograph of a young Julian sitting on his mother’s lap rested beneath a layer of dust. Julian wiped the glass clean, a sad, peaceful smile touching his lips.

“She loved this room,” Julian murmured. “She used to sit by the window and read to me while the rain fell. I locked it because I couldn’t bear the thought of anyone else occupying her space. Especially Arthur Prescott’s daughter.”

Nora walked up behind him, wrapping her arms around his waist, resting her cheek against his broad back. “She would be so incredibly proud of the man you became, Julian. You didn’t let the darkness consume you. You fought back.”

Julian turned around, taking her hands in his. “I didn’t do it alone. I needed you to show me how to be brave.”

He reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a small, square velvet box. Nora’s breath caught in her throat as he dropped down onto one knee in the center of his mother’s sunlit bedroom.

“Eleanora Vance,” Julian said, his voice thick with overwhelming emotion, his dark eyes shining with tears. “You are the bravest, most beautiful soul I have ever known. You brought the light back into this house, and you brought the life back into my heart. I don’t want to spend a single day of the rest of my life without you. Will you marry me?”

May you like

Nora covered her mouth with both hands, tears of absolute joy spilling over her cheeks as she nodded frantically. “Yes. Yes, Julian, of course I will.”

Julian slipped the stunning, flawless diamond ring onto her finger, standing up to pull her into a passionate, breathtaking kiss, sealing the promise of a future built not on lies and fear, but on unbreakable love and absolute truth.
