Chapter 11 - The Fall of the Empire

-11-

The fallout was apocalyptic.

By dawn, the name Arthur Prescott was synonymous with the greatest political and criminal scandal in American history. The encrypted files Helena Hawthorne had meticulously gathered eighteen years ago contained irrefutable, undeniable proof of a massive human trafficking and illegal arms syndicate operating out of the eastern seaboard, facilitated by corrupt judges, bribed senators, and bought police chiefs.

The FBI raided the Prescott estate in Connecticut before the sun even rose. Camille Prescott was arrested on the tarmac of a private airfield, attempting to board a jet to a non-extradition country with millions in untraceable bearer bonds packed into her designer luggage. When federal agents placed her in handcuffs, she screamed and thrashed, demanding to speak to her father, completely unaware that he was lying dead in a Brooklyn warehouse.

Julian and Nora remained in New York for a week, under the heavy, armed protection of the FBI’s anti-corruption task force, providing exhaustive testimony regarding everything they had uncovered in the crypt, the attack in the warehouse, and the death of Arthur Prescott.

Elias Thorne, miraculously, survived. The heavy revolver he had kept in his chest pocket had deflected the worst of the sniper round, shattering his ribs but saving his heart. He was recovering in a secure federal hospital, already dictating his magnum opus article on the fall of the Prescott syndicate to an eager assistant.

Marcus, too, was expected to make a full recovery, having tracked Julian to New York after surviving Victor’s assassination attempt at Alderwyn. Victor himself had been apprehended by state police attempting to cross the Canadian border, his wounded shoulder having forced him to seek medical attention at a compromised underground clinic.

When it was finally over, Julian and Nora stood on the balcony of a secure penthouse in Manhattan, watching the city lights glitter against the cold winter night. The news networks playing on the television inside were running endless, looping coverage of the indictments, the arrests, and the total dismantling of the corrupt power structures that had plagued the state for decades.

Julian wrapped his arms around Nora from behind, pulling her back against his chest, resting his chin on the top of her head.

“It feels surreal,” Nora whispered, looking out at the city. “For eighteen years, I lived in fear of a shadow I couldn’t even name. And now... it’s just gone.”

“It’s not just gone, Nora,” Julian corrected gently, turning her around to face him. “You destroyed it. You were the bravest person in that room. You saved me. You saved Elias. You avenged my mother, and your father.”

He reached out, his thumb gently tracing the silver chain of the locket still resting around her neck.

“Alderwyn is completely cleared,” Julian said quietly. “The feds have finished their sweep of the crypt and the manor. The estate is mine again, free of any Prescott influence. I’m going back tomorrow.”

Nora’s heart tightened slightly. The adrenaline had faded, leaving behind the cold, hard reality of their vastly different worlds. He was Julian Hawthorne, a billionaire corporate titan. She was Eleanora Vance, a woman who had spent the last ten years working dead-end jobs just to survive. The fire that had forged them together in the crucible of danger was burning out, and she didn’t know where she fit into his life in the peaceful aftermath.

“I should probably figure out where I’m going to go,” Nora said, looking down at the balcony floor. “I can’t go back to being a maid, obviously. And with the reward money the state is offering for the evidence, I can afford to start over somewhere new. Maybe out West.”

Julian placed two fingers under her chin, gently lifting her face until her eyes met his. The look of profound, terrified vulnerability in his gaze took her breath away.

“You can go anywhere in the world you want, Eleanora,” Julian whispered, his voice rough with emotion. “But if you leave me... I’ll spend the rest of my life following you. Because Alderwyn isn’t my home anymore. You are.”
