Chapter 7 - The Arrest in Suite 3

7

The sterile quiet of the third-floor surgical wing shattered instantly. Within thirty seconds of the nurse’s terrified retreat, the heavy double doors at the end of the corridor burst open, and three armed hospital security guards rushed into the hallway, their heavy boots thudding against the linoleum.

“Hold it right there! Hands where we can see them!” the lead guard shouted, unholstering a heavy-duty chemical spray canister while his partner reached for his radio.

Inside Prep Room 3, Dr. Aris Vance lunged toward the doorway, his face twisted in desperate triumph. “Arrest them! Both of them! They’re trespassers! They broke into a restricted medical zone and threatened my life!”

The guards surged forward, their batons drawn, ready to tackle whoever stood in their way.

They didn't expect Julian Vance.

Julian didn't flinch, didn't raise his voice, and didn't take a single step backward. As the lead guard reached out to grab his shoulder, Julian executed a short, devastatingly efficient palm-strike to the guard’s wrist, sending the chemical spray canister clattering across the floor, followed by a swift sweep that dropped the guard flat onto his back with the wind knocked entirely out of his lungs.

The second guard hesitated, his eyes darting to Julian’s massive shoulders and then to the cold, absolute authority radiating from his pale gray eyes.

“You might want to check who you work for before you raise a hand, son,” Julian said, his voice carrying the weight of a federal indictment.

He reached into his inner coat pocket and pulled out a heavy gold-embossed leather folio, flipping it open to display a federal magistrate’s warrant signed less than twenty minutes ago by Judge Thomas Sterling, alongside a stamped directive from the U.S. Attorney General’s office.

The guard froze, staring at the official seal and the bold lettering: FEDERAL TASK FORCE ON HEALTHCARE FRAUD AND BIOLOGICAL CONSPIRACY.

“Dr. Aris Vance,” Julian announced, his voice ringing loud enough to carry down the entire hallway where a dozen nurses and technicians had gathered to watch in stunned silence. “You are hereby placed under federal arrest for the premeditated murder of Elena Marsh, corporate wire fraud, and the illegal operation of unauthorized human biological harvesting facilities on federal property.”

Aris staggered backward, his face turning the color of skim milk. “No—that’s a forged writ! You can’t do this! I’m the chief of cardiothoracic surgery! The board will—the hospital director—”

“The hospital director was picked up by federal marshals at his home ten minutes ago,” Julian interrupted coldly, slipping the folio back into his coat. He nodded toward Dileia. “Miss Marsh, if you please.”

Dileia stepped forward, her hands steady as she reached into her scrub pocket and pulled out a pair of standard-issue steel handcuffs she had discreetly borrowed from a friendly ER paramedic downstairs. Before Aris could turn to run, she grabbed the surgeon by the collar of his pristine white lab coat and spun him around, slamming his wrists hard against the stainless-steel counter.

Click. Click.

The steel cuffs locked into place with a sharp, definitive sound that echoed off the white tile walls.

“This is for my mother,” Dileia whispered fiercely into his ear as Aris let out a pathetic, muffled sob of defeat.

Heavy footfalls echoed down the corridor once more, but this time they weren't hospital security. Four federal marshized agents in dark tactical vests, led by a stern-faced senior investigator named Miller, strode briskly into the prep room.

“Agent Miller, U.S. Marshals,” the lead investigator flashed his badge at the bewildered hospital guards. “Secure the perimeter. Take custody of the suspect. We have a warrant to seize all patient logs, server towers, and Level B4 biometric databases immediately.”

As Aris Vance was hauled out of the prep room in handcuffs, his head bowed, his spotless white lab coat dragging against the linoleum floor, the gathered nurses and staff stared in stunned, horrified disbelief. The invincible surgeon, the golden boy of Marlo County Public Hospital, was gone.

Dileia stood in the center of the prep room, her breath coming in slow, steady intervals. She looked down at the floor where Dr. Vance’s paper coffee cup still lay spilled in a dark brown puddle.

Julian Vance stepped up beside her, placing a heavy, grounding hand on her shoulder.

“It’s done, Dileia,” he said quietly. “The first layer, anyway.”

“No,” Dileia replied, her dark eyes flashing with a sudden, unyielding resolve as she looked toward the elevators where federal agents were already wheeling out cartloads of seized evidence files. “It’s only just beginning.”
