Chapter 10 - The Senator’s Counter-Attack

10
By 8:00 a.m., the front page of every major newspaper from Washington to New York was dominated by a single, earth-shattering headline: FEDERAL RAID UNCOVERS MULTI-MILLION DOLLAR BIOLOGICAL HARVESTING RING AT MARLO COUNTY PUBLIC HOSPITAL.
Below the fold, secondary articles detailed the arrest of Chief of Surgery Dr. Aris Vance, the freezing of municipal health endowments, and the sudden, mysterious restructuring of the hospital under the newly formed Elena Marsh Memorial Health Trust.
Inside a sprawling, mahogany-paneled estate in McLean, Virginia, Senator Richard Vance stood before a towering floor-to-ceiling window overlooking an immaculate private garden, holding a heavy crystal tumbler of bourbon so tight his knuckles were bleached white.
On the leather desk behind him, his encrypted satellite phone buzzed with an urgent, continuous vibration.
He didn't answer it. He didn't need to. The news anchor on the muted television screen mounted in the corner of the study was already displaying a live aerial shot of federal agents hauling massive server towers out of Marlo County Public Hospital’s basement annex.
The heavy oak door of the study swung open without a knock.
General Marcus Reed, a retired military contractor who ran the senator’s off-the-books security and logistics operations, strode into the room looking like a man who had just received word of an active combat breach.
“Senator, we’ve lost the Baltimore facility,” Reed said without preamble, his voice clipped and urgent. “Federal marshals secured Level B4 at midnight under an emergency judicial warrant backed by the Vance Foundation trust. Aris is in a federal holding cell, and our offshore data relays in the Caymans have been flagged by international financial crimes units.”
Senator Vance turned slowly away from the window. He was a tall man in his late sixties, with iron-gray hair combed straight back, sharp patrician features, and cold, calculating eyes that had survived four decades of federal politics.
“My nephew is a fool,” Senator Vance said, his voice remarkably steady, devoid of panic or familial grief. “I told him years ago that harvesting from unmonitored charity wards was too sloppy. He got greedy. He thought wearing a surgical mask made him invisible.”
“It’s not just Aris, Senator,” Reed countered, stepping closer to the desk. “The person who engineered this breach isn't a federal investigator. It’s Julian.”
The senator’s eyes narrowed into thin, dangerous slits. “My estranged nephew. I thought he was too busy playing shipping magnate on the Chesapeake to care about hospital politics.”
“He doesn't care about the hospital,” Reed corrected grimly. “He cares about the nurse. Elena Marsh’s daughter—Dileia Marsh. Julian has installed her as the majority trustee of the new hospital trust. They didn't just raid the basement, Senator. They recovered the encrypted comm logs from Leo’s courier drive. They have our direct signatures authorizing the Project Helix funding transfers.”
Senator Vance set his crystal tumbler down on the mahogany desk with a sharp clink. The ice cubes fractured against the rim.
“If those comm logs reach a federal grand jury, our entire political network collapses within forty-eight hours,” the senator noted, his tone chillingly analytical. “Every real estate development, every pharmaceutical subsidiary, every campaign donor who laundered money through our medical grants will be indicted under RICO statutes.”
“Then we don't let the logs reach a grand jury,” Reed said smoothly, resting his hands on the back of a leather chair.
Senator Vance looked up, his cold eyes locking onto the general’s face. “Explain.”
“Julian and the nurse are currently operating out of the Vance shipping terminal on Pier 42 in Baltimore,” Reed outlined, his voice dropping to a conspiratorial whisper. “It’s a private maritime zone. No local police jurisdiction without federal sign-off. But tonight at midnight, a container ship departs for Rotterdam carrying twenty tons of industrial cargo.”

“An accident at sea,” Senator Vance finished softly, a dark, chilling smile touching the corner of his thin lips. “A tragic maritime fire on a private pier. Very unfortunate. Extremely thorough.”
“I’ll assemble the tactical team,” Reed said, turning toward the door. “By sunrise tomorrow, the Elena Marsh Memorial Health Trust will be looking for a new director.”
