PART 2 — THE FOLDER THE DOCTOR NEVER WANTED OPENED

The hospital door slammed against the wall.

A doctor rushed inside carrying a thick folder.

His face looked pale.

Far too pale for a man who delivered babies every day.

The moment he saw me holding the twins, he stopped.

For several seconds nobody spoke.

Rain battered the windows.

Machines beeped softly.

The babies slept peacefully.

Yet something was terribly wrong.

I could feel it.

Sylvie noticed it too.

Her fingers tightened around the blanket covering her lap.

"Dr. Harris?"

The doctor swallowed.

Then looked directly at me.

"Mr. Vexley."

His voice sounded strained.

"We have a problem."

I almost laughed.

A problem?

My ex-wife had just revealed I was apparently the father of two newborn babies I never knew existed.

My entire life had already exploded.

What problem could possibly be bigger than that?

Then Dr. Harris placed the folder on the bed.

And answered.

"Someone is trying to take your children."

The room froze.

"What?"

The doctor opened the folder.

Inside sat legal documents.

Birth records.

Medical reports.

DNA results.

Emergency court filings.

At the very top rested a petition filed less than one hour earlier.

Emergency Custody Application

Applicant:

Victor Langford

The name hit me like a punch.

Because I knew exactly who Victor Langford was.

Everyone in New York did.

Victor owned Langford Biotech.

My largest competitor.

My oldest enemy.

The man who had spent fifteen years trying to destroy me.

I stared at the paperwork.

"Why would Victor Langford be filing custody papers for my children?"

Nobody answered immediately.

Then Sylvie quietly spoke.

"Because he believes they're his."

Silence.

Pure silence.

I looked at her.

Then the twins.

Then back at her.

"What are you talking about?"

Tears finally appeared in her eyes.

Because the answer wasn't simple.

Nine months earlier...

Everything had begun with a fertility clinic.

The memory seemed painful.

Painful enough that Sylvie struggled to continue.

Our marriage had already been falling apart.

The arguments.

The distance.

The endless business trips.

The loneliness.

But despite everything...

We wanted children.

Or at least we once had.

For years we tried.

Nothing happened.

Doctors.

Tests.

Specialists.

Treatments.

Nothing.

Then one physician recommended an advanced fertility program.

One of the most expensive in the country.

Ironically...

Owned by Langford Biotech.

My stomach dropped.

"No."

Sylvie nodded.

"Yes."

The room suddenly felt colder.

Because I already knew where this story was going.

And I hated it.

The clinic assured them everything was confidential.

Everything secure.

Everything professional.

Then months later...

Sylvie became pregnant.

At almost the exact same time our marriage finally collapsed.

The divorce followed.

The separation followed.

The silence followed.

And throughout all of it...

She kept the pregnancy secret.

Not because she wanted revenge.

Because someone threatened her.

My pulse accelerated.

"Victor."

She nodded.

Three months into the pregnancy, Victor Langford personally contacted her.

Not through lawyers.

Not through intermediaries.

Personally.

He revealed information nobody should have known.

Medical details.

Embryo records.

Private reports.

Then he made a claim.

A horrifying claim.

The embryos implanted during treatment didn't belong to Damon Vexley.

They belonged to Victor Langford.

The room spun.

"What?"

Dr. Harris immediately slid another document toward me.

DNA analysis.

Fresh.

Recent.

Verified.

I scanned the results.

Then froze.

Because according to the report...

The twins shared my DNA.

Yet somehow...

They also shared Victor Langford's.

Impossible.

Completely impossible.

Until Dr. Harris spoke.

"The embryos were genetically modified."

Silence.

I stared at him.

"What does that even mean?"

The doctor looked sick.

Because whatever happened...

Even he struggled to believe it.

Then he explained.

Langford Biotech had secretly conducted unauthorized genetic enhancement experiments.

Illegal experiments.

Human experiments.

The fertility clinic served as a cover.

Patients never knew.

Never consented.

Never suspected.

DNA samples were altered.

Combined.

Manipulated.

And according to internal records...

Sylvie's embryos became part of one such experiment.

The twins carried Damon Vexley's DNA.

And Victor Langford's.

At the same time.

The room fell silent.

Because suddenly the custody petition made perfect sense.

Victor wasn't claiming the twins because he loved them.

Victor was claiming them because they represented proof.

Proof of illegal research.

Proof of criminal activity.

Proof that could destroy his empire.

And if he gained custody...

The evidence disappeared.

Forever.

Then another voice interrupted.

A nurse.

Terrified.

She burst into the room.

"Security."

Everyone turned.

"What happened?"

The nurse looked ready to faint.

Then answered.

"Victor Langford just arrived."

Silence.

"What?"

The nurse nodded.

"He's downstairs."

Another pause.

"With lawyers."

Another pause.

"And federal marshals."

The room froze.

Because Victor Langford wasn't coming alone.

He was coming with power.

Money.

Influence.

Connections.

Everything billionaires use when they don't want to lose.

Then my phone vibrated.

Unknown number.

One message.

A single photograph.

The image showed a laboratory.

Hidden underground.

Rows of incubation chambers.

Medical equipment.

Dozens of files.

And in the center stood Victor Langford.

Beside him...

A woman I recognized instantly.

Sylvie.

Taken two years earlier.

Before the fertility treatment.

Before the divorce.

Before everything.

Attached beneath the photo were six words.

She knew from the beginning.

My blood ran cold.

Because suddenly another possibility emerged.

A possibility far worse than anything I'd imagined.

What if Victor wasn't lying?

What if Sylvie wasn't telling the whole truth?

And what if the twins were never the real secret?

Because hidden somewhere inside Langford Biotech existed a project so dangerous that people were already willing to kill for it.

And somehow...

May you like

My children were the key.
