Chapter 4 - The Reversal Protocol-4

The industrial summer storm over Manhattan finally broke by the time Special Agent Harris and I stepped out onto the granite steps of the federal courthouse. The cold, blinding rain battered the asphalt of Foley Square, turning the skeletal silhouettes of the financial district skyscrapers into a grey, shifting wasteland of wet stone and glass.

Agent Harris looked at me, a deep, profound sense of professional respect softening the hard lines around her eyes as she opened the rear cabin doors of her high-performance luxury SUV. "The cyber units just finalized the master data extraction loop on the Pan-Atlantic Holdings servers in Cyprus, Evelyn. The eighty-five million dollars Adrian’s mistress attempted to clear through their offshore accounts at noon... it’s been safely intercepted and returned to your son's foundation account."

"The pipeline is dead, Harris," I said, drawing a long, clean breath of the crisp mountain air into my lungs. My chest didn't throb with the phantom weight of my marriage anymore. The empty room in the Ballard estate where I had spent three long years waiting for a ghost... it had vanished from my horizon forever.

"We’re going home, Evelyn," Marcus Hale smiled, sliding his laptop terminal into his leather briefcase as he sat down on the bench seat opposite my stroller. "To the valley cottage in Maine. Your father's old land reserve... the Oakhill conservation zone... it’s completely clean of any state property liabilities now. The Vance family—sorry, the Vale syndicate has zero leverage left to bargain with."

"Not home yet," a sharp, clear voice spoke from the shadow of a massive marble pillar at the base of the courthouse steps.

We stopped, our bodies tensing instinctively as the tactical operators formed a loose perimeter around the stroller. Stepping out from the foggy gloom was Julianna Croft—the daughter of Senator Julian Croft, the chairman of the State Urban Development Committee.

She wore a flawless beige trench coat, her dark hair perfectly styled, a sleek leather briefcase in her hand. Beside her stood two men in sharp dark suits with earpieces—private security, not federal marshals.

"Julianna," Agent Harris growled, her hand instinctively dropping toward her holstered service weapon. "The state judicial committee finalized your family's asset liquidations three hours ago. Your father is entering a federal holding cell before dark."

"He is," Julianna smiled, a cool, untouchable expression that radiated absolute political immunity beneath her designer sunglasses. "Until forty-five minutes ago, when my father’s legal team finalized a separate immunity agreement with the Department of Justice. In exchange for his testimony against Adrian's board regarding the Cyprus money laundering wires... all charges against me have been permanently dropped. I’m a free woman, Agent Harris."

She walked slowly down the steps, her high heels clicking sharply against the granite until she stood just three feet away from my stroller.
