Chapter 6 - The Oakland Transit-6

The realization of Arthur’s double-cross turned the warm Napa afternoon into an icy, suffocating nightmare. He hadn't just protected the family name; he had used the wedding, the FBI intervention, and his own son’s desperation as a massive smoke screen to execute the ultimate corporate heist.

"You won't get away with this, Arthur," I hissed, my knuckles turning white as I crumpled the paper in my hand. "I’ll walk straight into that pavilion and tell Julian. I’ll tell Agent Harris."

"And say what, Christian?" Arthur scoffed softly, his tone dripping with an arrogant, untouchable confidence. "You have a wet piece of paper with a smeared signature that any forensic expert will throw out of court as water-damaged hearsay. The FBI is currently operating under the absolute certainty that they have the primary evidence bag. If you try to disrupt their chain of custody now with a wild theory about an Oakland transport, they’ll detain you for obstructing a federal investigation."

He checked his platinum Patek Philippe watch, a cold finality settling into his eyes.

"The transport vehicle is a non-descript white medical courier van, operating under a forged state health department permit. It contains the primary server core that Elena Vance originally downloaded. It crosses the tarmac at Oakland International Airport in exactly forty-five minutes, where a private Gulfstream G650 registered to an offshore shell firm is waiting with its engines running. Once that plane leaves US airspace, the ledger is permanently out of the jurisdiction of the United States government."

Arthur reached out, his hand patting my shoulder with a heavy, patronizing pressure that felt like an iron shackle. "Go back to your hotel, little brother. Enjoy the wine. Let the grown-ups secure the future of this family."

He turned and walked calmly toward the estate parking lot, where his private luxury sedan was waiting, its engine idling quietly in the shadows.

I stood alone by the fountain, my mind spinning through a thousand variables. I looked toward the pavilion where Julian and Maya were surrounded by federal agents. If I went in there, Arthur was right—the bureaucratic machinery of the FBI would stall any immediate response. They would spend hours verifying the drive, analyzing the firewalls, and by the time they realized they had been handed a decoy, the Gulfstream would be over the Pacific Ocean.

There was only one person who had the agility, the knowledge, and the raw, unadulterated motivation to stop that transport before it reached the airfield.

I pulled my phone from my tuxedo pocket, bypassing the standard network grid to log into a private, high-frequency radio application that Julian and I had used during our wilderness excursions in the Pacific Northwest years ago.

I clicked the channel open. "Julian. Do you copy me? Do not look around. Do not let the agents near you notice you're listening."

A second later, a low, static-tinged voice crackled through my wireless earpiece. It was Julian, his breathing short and tense. "Christian? What’s wrong? I’m inside the data processing unit with Harris."

"The drive you gave them is a decoy, Julian," I said, my voice dropping into a desperate, fast whisper as I sprinted toward my own rental car parked near the outer vineyard gate. "Arthur switched it in the bridal suite. The real ledger is inside a white medical courier van heading toward Oakland International Airport right now. It leaves on a private Gulfstream in forty minutes. Your father was the one who authorized the hit on Elena, Julian. He’s closing the loop tonight."

A long, agonizing silence stretched over the radio channel. I could hear the distant beep of federal diagnostic monitors through his end. Then, a low, guttural sound tore through the earpiece—the sound of a young man’s entire world shattering into a million jagged pieces of pure, unadulterated fury.

"The gravel service road along the canal," Julian hissed, his voice dropping into a freezing, lethal register. "It cuts off the Oakland highway traffic near the old refinery. I’m leaving Maya with Harris under federal protective custody. Christian... meet me at the bridge."
