Chapter 4 - The Security Matrix-4

"Stop them!" Vanessa shrieked, her voice cracking with pure, unadulterated panic as she pointed a trembling finger at Julian. "Marcus! Thomas! Secure that drive! Now!"
The two large security men in the dark suits broke into a sprint, tearing across the manicured lawn, pushing several elderly guests out of their way as they reached for the concealed weapons beneath their jackets.
But before they could reach the fountain, my brother Arthur stood up from his chair. He didn't look like a confused, grieving father anymore. He looked like the former Marine officer he was. He reached into his formal tuxedo jacket, pulled out a sleek, black compact semi-automatic pistol, and leveled it directly at the lead security guard's chest.
"State Police! Nobody move!" a loud, commanding voice bellowed from the perimeter of the garden.
Suddenly, the heavy privacy hedges surrounding the estate courtyard burst open. A dozen heavily armed tactical operators wearing tactical vests with the letters FBI emblazoned across their chests flooded the lawn, their weapons raised, their laser sights painting bright red dots across Vanessa’s security detail.
The two guards immediately stopped, raising their hands in the air as the tactical officers slammed them down onto the grass, securing their wrists in heavy steel handcuffs.
Vanessa fell to her knees on the dirty stone pavers, her hands clawing at her torn veil, a guttural scream of pure rage and defeat tearing from her throat. "Julian! You planned this! You turned this entire wedding into a trap!"
"I didn't turn it into a trap, Vanessa," Julian said quietly, walking over to Maya and lifting her gently into his arms, shielding her face from the armed agents clearing the lawn. "You did. The moment you chose to use our wedding bouquet to smuggle stolen sovereign data out of the country, you sealed your own fate. I just ensured that the right people were watching when you did it."
Special Agent Harris, the lead investigator for the FBI’s Financial Crimes Division, stepped through the crowd of terrified guests, her face hard and professional. She walked straight to the fountain, taking the silver data drive from Julian’s hand and placing it securely inside a static-shielded evidence bag.
"Julian Callahan, Maya Callahan," Agent Harris said, her eyes softening slightly as she looked at the little girl. "You both need to step out into the estate pavilion immediately. The perimeter is secure, but we need to execute the formal data download before the Swiss firewalls attempt a remote wipe."
I watched as Julian carried his daughter away from the ruined altar, his broad shoulders squared against the wind, his face completely calm. Maya wrapped her tiny arms around his neck, her head resting flat against his shoulder, her hazel eyes looking back at Vanessa with a profound, unblinking clarity that told me she finally felt safe.

But as I looked down at the weeping bride on the floor, my eyes caught something else—a small, crumpled piece of paper that had fallen out of Vanessa’s bodice when Julian shoved her. It was a handwritten note, written on expensive corporate stationery, bearing a signature that made my blood run instantly cold.
It wasn't Vanessa’s father who had authorized the transaction. It was someone much closer to home. Someone who was currently standing right next to me.
