Chapter 8 - THE STITCHED WOUND

-2-

The physical rehabilitation was entering its most excruciating phase. By early December, Luca was no longer content with mere muscle twitches; he began attempting vertical weight-bearing exercises in the privacy of his locked rehabilitation suite. Using a heavy-duty parallel gym bar he had ordered through black-market channels and installed between two reinforced concrete pillars, Luca hauled his upper body upward using his massive arm and chest strength, forcing his legs to dangle beneath him like heavy pendulums. The first time he let his feet touch the cold concrete floor, a wave of nauseating vertigo swept over him. His knees buckled instantly, sending a searing shock of nerve pain shooting up his spine that forced him to collapse onto a foam mat, gasping for air.

Yet, he refused to stop. Every morning at 4:00 a.m., long before the estate stirred to life, Luca dragged himself out of bed and into the parallel bars, repeating the brutal cycle of lifting, dropping, and failing until his palms were blistered and bloody. Elena discovered him one morning when she came down early to prep the kitchen inventories. Hearing muffled grunts of exertion from behind the locked guest suite door, she used her master maintenance key—a perk of her supervisory cleaning duties—to slip quietly inside. She froze in the doorway, her hands flying to her mouth to stifle a gasp as she watched Luca suspended between the steel bars, his teeth clenched in agony as he forced his right foot to take a fractional, trembling step forward.

Luca heard the click of the door and stopped, his arms shaking violently as he supported his weight. He looked over his shoulder, meeting Elena’s wide, tear-filled eyes. "You shouldn't be in here, Elena," he panted, sweat pouring down his forehead and soaking his gray t-shirt. Instead of retreating, Elena walked across the rubber mat, reached up without a word, and wrapped her strong hands around his waist, helping to stabilize his trembling torso against her own shoulder. "Shut up, Luca," she whispered fiercely, her voice thick with emotion. "You're an idiot for doing this alone, but you're stubborn enough to pull it off." With Elena’s steady support providing the crucial lateral balance he lacked, Luca took a second step—then a third. The movement was clumsy, robotic, and agonizingly slow, but it was walking. For the first time in twelve years, Luca Costello was moving across the floor under his own power.

The emotional dam broke silently between them. For twelve years, Elena had carried the crushing burden of raising their child in the shadows, believing the man she loved had abandoned her to a life of perpetual fear. For twelve years, Luca had sat in his chair believing his body had betrayed him and his life was an irredeemable wasteland. Now, standing together in the dimly lit rehabilitation room with their bodies pressed close, the missing pieces of their fractured past locked definitively into place. Elena rested her forehead against Luca’s sweat-soaked shoulder, letting out a long, shuddering sob that released a decade of accumulated trauma. Luca wrapped his right arm securely around her back, burying his face in her hair, feeling the miraculous, undeniable surge of life coursing through every fiber of his recovering frame.

"We have two weeks until the syndicate gala," Luca whispered against her hair, his voice steadying as the adrenaline of the moment focused his resolve. "Marcus and Dominic are planning to execute their final coup on the night of the solstice. They think I'm completely helpless, sitting duck waiting for their bullet or their federal indictment. On that night, I’m going to stand up at the head of the dining table and show them what a dead man looks like when he comes back for what's his." Elena pulled back, looking up into his fierce, unyielding eyes with a mixture of terror and absolute devotion. "They have armed guards stationed at every doorway, Luca. The entire compound will be locked down for the gala. If you try to stand up against them without absolute tactical surprise, they'll slaughter us all."

"They won't have the chance," Luca replied, a cold, predatory smile playing on his lips. "Because Viktor Vance and his loyalists control the internal security grid, Judge Sterling is holding the arrest warrants, and my captains are so arrogant they've spent the last six months walking right into every trap I've laid for them." He gently brushed a stray lock of hair from her cheek, his thumb tracing the line of her jaw. "You and Maya need to be out of the mansion when the storm hits. Viktor has arranged a secure safehouse sixty miles north, near the Wisconsin border. Once the board meeting begins, you two will be driven away under heavy guard." Elena shook her head firmly, her jaw set with stubborn defiance. "No. I spent twelve years running away from my life, Luca. I'm not running anymore. If you're standing up at that table to take back your empire, I'm standing right beside you in this house."

Luca stared at her, recognizing the exact same unbreakable stubbornness that he had fallen in love with on the South Side all those years ago. He nodded slowly, realizing that trying to force her away would be an exercise in futility. "Very well," he said, pulling her close for one brief, fierce embrace before lowering himself back into his wheelchair with controlled grace. "We face them together. But until the night of the solstice, you continue to play the quiet maid, and Maya plays in the garden. Let our enemies gorge themselves on their own overconfidence. The fatter the pig, the cleaner the cut."
