Chapter 10 - THE GALA OF THE DAMNED

-2-

The grand dining room of the Reyes estate was a masterpiece of aristocratic excess, featuring vaulted timber ceilings, roaring stone fireplaces, and a forty-foot mahogany table glittering with crystal glassware and silver candelabras. Over fifty high-ranking syndicate capos, regional enforcers, and corrupt corporate partners sat in plush velvet chairs, dining on prime rib and vintage burgundy while listening to Marcus Vance deliver his keynote address. Standing at the head of the table beneath a massive oil painting of the Reyes estate's founding patriarch, Marcus raised his crystal flute of champagne, his face flushed with triumph and alcohol. "To the next chapter of our great syndicate," Marcus proclaimed, his voice booming across the cavernous room. "To vision, to unity, and to the pragmatic recognition that old eras must gracefully give way to new leadership!"

A chorus of polite applause and clinking glasses rippled through the assembly. Dominic Rossi, sitting to Marcus's immediate left, grinned broadly, already mentally calculating his share of the eastern dock revenues. "And let us remember," Dominic added, stepping up to take the floor next, "our dear friend Luca Costello, whose long illness has taught us the sobering value of stability and institutional continuity. Though he cannot be with us tonight—confined as he is to his private quarters—his spirit lives on in every dollar this syndicate generates!" A few chuckles echoed around the table at the thinly veiled mockery, the assembled capos secure in the belief that the lion was permanently caged and defanged.

Suddenly, the heavy double oak doors at the far end of the dining room swung open with a resounding, thunderous bang that cut Dominic’s speech short in mid-sentence. The sharp, metallic clatter of heavy boots striking the parquet floor echoed through the sudden, suffocating silence. Every head at the table snapped toward the entrance, expecting an emergency, a security breach, or a federal raid. Instead, what they saw froze the blood in their veins and turned their champagne glasses to lead in their hands. Framed in the doorway stood Viktor Vance, his hand resting casually on the butt of a sidearm, flanked by four armed loyalists blocking every exit. And walking slowly, deliberately, between them, supported by no cane, no wheelchair, and no assistance, was Luca Costello.

The transformation was absolute. Dressed in an impeccably tailored charcoal suit, his broad shoulders squared and his dark eyes blazing with cold, radioactive fury, Luca walked down the center aisle of the dining room with the steady, measured cadence of an executioner approaching the gallows. The color drained entirely from Marcus Vance’s face, his jaw dropping so low his champagne flute slipped from his trembling fingers, shattering against the hardwood floor with a sharp, explosive crack. Dominic Rossi grabbed the edge of the mahogany table, his knuckles turning white as he hyperventilated, staring at Luca as if he were witnessing a corpse rise from an open casket. The entire room of hardened criminals sat paralyzed, struck dumb by the horrifying realization that the man they had poisoned, betrayed, and buried alive had just walked back into the room.

Luca stopped at the foot of the long table, resting his hands lightly on the back of an empty velvet chair. He didn't speak immediately; he let the suffocating silence stretch across the room, letting the crushing weight of his presence wash over his traitorous subordinates like a physical tide. "Good evening, gentlemen," Luca finally spoke, his deep, resonant baritone vibrating against the stone walls with terrifying clarity. "I trust you're enjoying the prime rib. It would be a shame for such an expensive meal to go to waste before we discuss the small matter of your impending bankruptcies and federal indictments."

Marcus struggled to find his voice, his hands shaking violently as he gripped the edge of the mahogany podium. "L-Luca... how... how is this possible? The doctors... the medical reports said you were permanently paralyzed! You can't—" "The medical reports you fabricated, Marcus?" Luca interrupted smoothly, stepping forward and tossing a thick manila folder onto the center of the table right beside the roast beef platter. "The Hopkins dossier detailing the exact chemical composition of Compound 77-B—the neurotoxin you and Dominic laced my scotch with back in October 2013? Yes, I suppose you expected my nervous system to remain permanently asleep. Unfortunately for you, children have a better grasp of biology than corrupt neurologists: dead things don't try."

Panic erupted instantly around the table. Several capos shoved their chairs back, reaching instinctively for shoulder holsters, but Viktor Vance’s security detail instantly leveled automatic weapons across the room, locking every man in place with laser-sighted precision. "Don't even think about it," Viktor barked, his voice like cracking ice. "Anyone who reaches for a piece gets turned into Swiss cheese before they clear leather." Dominic Rossi burst into hysterical tears, sinking back into his velvet chair and burying his face in his hands. "We didn't mean... it was business, Luca! Just business!" Luca turned his lethal gaze onto Dominic, a sneer twisting his lips. "Business? You poisoned a man in his own home, stole twelve years of his life, and tried to sell my shipping lanes to federal informants. You're going to learn what real business looks like very shortly."
