Chapter 14 - The Restored Legacy-14

A year later.
The summer sun shone brightly over a sprawling, historic timber-and-stone estate in the coastal hills of Massachusetts.
The house had originally belonged to Clara’s grandfather—the very estate her father had grown up in, which had been tied up in legal disputes for decades. Using the recovered cross-trust funds, Clara and I had purchased the property back from the estate receivership, fully restoring the grand old home to its former glory.
On the wide, sunlit stone patio, two-year-old Leo was running through the grass, chasing a golden retriever puppy we had adopted a month earlier. His happy, ringing laughter echoed across the manicured lawns.
Clara stood beside me at the patio railing, holding a glass of iced tea, her head resting peacefully against my shoulder.
My cousin David and Clara’s uncle Arthur were sitting at a patio table nearby, laughing as they reviewed architectural plans for the Arthur Montgomery & Richard Vance Children's Foundation—a charitable organization we had founded using twenty million dollars from the liquidated Vance Properties assets to support young, low-income mothers with post-natal medical care and legal advocacy.
"He has his grandfather's eyes," Arthur Montgomery murmured softly, watching Leo play in the grass. "Arthur would be so proud of you, Clara."
"We did it together, Uncle Arthur," Clara smiled, reaching out to squeeze my hand.
My phone rang in my pocket. It was a brief notification from the state prison registry office—a routine automated update that I received every six months:
Status Update: Inmate #884192 (Eleanor Vance). Location: Fluvanna Correctional Center. Security Level: Medium. Behavior Record: Isolated / No Visitors Requested.

I looked at the screen for three seconds. I didn't feel hatred, bitterness, or revenge. The memory of the cold woman at my dining table had lost every single ounce of its power over my life.
I pressed 'delete' on the notification and slid the phone back into my pocket forever.
