Chapter 6 - The Midnight Raid-6

By 11:30 PM, the atmosphere inside St. Matthew’s Hospital had shifted from a private personal crisis to a full-scale federal law enforcement operation.
The NICU floor had been cleared of non-essential personnel. Four armed federal marshals stood guard at the main elevators, while a team of forensic accountants from the FBI’s Financial Crimes Task Force set up a temporary command station in the hospital’s conference room directly down the hall from Noah’s suite.
Ethan sat in a folding chair in the center of the room, surrounded by federal agents, wearing a grey prison jumpsuit provided by the marshals. His tailored suit lay discarded in a corner trash bin. He was giving a recorded, line-by-line confession, identifying every shell company, every corrupt politician, and every bank account that Senator Arthur Vance had used to launder money over the last decade.
David Vance walked back into Noah’s room, holding two steaming cups of coffee, passing one to me as I sat beside my son’s incubator.
"How is he doing?" David asked softly, looking down at Noah.
"His oxygen saturation levels are up to ninety-eight percent," I smiled, gently stroking Noah’s tiny cheek with my pinky finger. "The doctors say he’s stronger than he looks."
"He gets that from his mother," David said, taking a sip of his coffee. "The Federal District Judge in D.C. just signed the primary arrest warrants for Senator Arthur Vance. The FBI's Hostage Rescue Team and Tactical Operations Division are surrounding the Vance Estate in Westchester right now."
I looked up at David, my eyes narrowing slightly. "Will Arthur go quietly?"
"A man who has held absolute power for thirty years never goes quietly, Claire," David warned gently. "He has immense resources, private security teams, and contacts throughout the state apparatus. He’s going to fight with everything he has."
Before I could answer, the door to the NICU suite creaked open, and Detective Marcus Miller walked in, his face dark and noticeably tense.
"Claire, David," Detective Miller spoke rapidly, dropping his voice into a low whisper. "We have a massive problem."
David stood up instantly. "What happened? Did the federal warrant leak?"
"Worse," Detective Miller said, pulling out his secure radio. "Ten minutes ago, Bianca Vance was processed at the Central Booking facility down on Centre Street. Her father’s high-priced defense attorney arrived with a state Supreme Court writ signed by a corrupt local judge, granting her immediate emergency bail on a five-hundred-thousand-dollar bond."
A cold knife of anxiety stabbed through my stomach. "She was released?!"
"She’s out," Detective Miller confirmed, his jaw tight. "And our traffic surveillance grid just flagged her white Mercedes exiting the city highway, heading high-speed toward Westchester. But that’s not all..."
Detective Miller stepped closer to the window, sweeping the dark hospital grounds below with a trained eye.
"Three unidentified black SUVs just pulled into the hospital’s lower parking structure," Detective Miller whispered, reaching into his jacket, unholstering his Glock 19 service weapon. "They cut the power to the garage security cameras thirty seconds ago."
My blood ran cold.
Arthur Vance wasn't trying to flee the country. He wasn't trying to hide behind his lawyers. He knew that if Ethan’s confession reached the federal grand jury in Washington, his entire political empire, his fortune, and his freedom would be destroyed forever.

He had sent his private enforcement detail to the hospital to eliminate the evidence, the key witness, and the woman who had dared to stand up to him.
"David," I said, my voice dropping into an absolute, icy calm as I stood up, placing my body directly between the glass door and Noah’s incubator. "Lock the internal security shutters."
