Chapter 2 - The Shadow of Cole Enterprises-2

The silence that fell over the hospital corridor was suffocating.

Ethan stared at the silver flash drive in my hand as if it were a unexploded bomb. His hands began to tremble so violently that he had to slip them into his trousers pockets to hide it. Bianca stood behind him, looking back and forth between us, her shallow, panicked breathing the only sound echoing in the hallway.

"Claire..." Ethan choked out, his voice suddenly dropping into a pathetic, desperate whine. "Claire, please... let's talk about this privately. We were married for ten years. We built a life together. You can't honestly want to destroy me over a... over a misunderstanding!"

"A misunderstanding?" I laughed—a dry, bitter sound that had no humor in it. "You left me with a stack of fraudulent debt in my name while you bought a fifteen-million-dollar penthouse in Tribeca for Bianca. You had your lawyers serve me with divorce papers while I was sitting in a waiting room undergoing emergency tests. And three days ago, your fiancée shoved me into a concrete wall, nearly killing our son. Is that what you call a 'misunderstanding'?"

Before Ethan could respond, the heavy double doors at the end of the NICU corridor swung open with a loud, metallic slam.

Two men in sharp, charcoal-grey suits marched down the hallway toward us. On the left was David Vance—my personal attorney, a towering man with iron-grey hair and sharp, predatory blue eyes that had dismantled dozens of corporate fraudsters in this city. On the right was Detective Marcus Miller, a broad-shouldered man with a dark trench coat, a gold badge clipped to his belt, and a manila folder held firmly under his arm.

"Claire," David said, offering me a tight, reassuring nod as he stepped up to the glass. "Are you and Noah alright?"

"We’re fine, David," I replied, keeping my eyes locked on Ethan. "Everything is ready."

Detective Miller stepped forward, pulling a pair of heavy steel handcuffs from his belt, his gaze landing directly on Bianca.

"Bianca Vance?" Detective Miller spoke, his voice booming with clear, official authority. "You are under arrest for aggravated assault, reckless endangerment, and felony battery resulting in great bodily harm to Claire Bennett and her infant child."

Bianca let out a high-pitched, hysterical shriek, backing away into the corner of the wall. "No! Get away from me! Do you know who my father is?! My father is Arthur Vance! He owns half the real estate in this city! You can't touch me!"

"Your father can hire as many lawyers as he wants, Ms. Vance," Detective Miller said coldly, stepping forward, grabbing her slender wrist, and snapping the steel cuff around her wrist with a sharp, metallic click. "Right now, you’re coming with me to the Central Booking facility."

"Ethan! Do something!" Bianca screamed, struggling frantically as Detective Miller twisted her other arm behind her back, fastening the second cuff. "Ethan! Call my father! Tell him to stop them! EEEETHAAN!"

Ethan didn't move a muscle. He stood frozen, his eyes wide with horror, watching his bride-to-be being dragged down the hallway in handcuffs, her white silk dress trailing along the dirty floorboards. He was so terrified of his own impending collapse that he couldn't even summon the courage to defend the woman he had abandoned me for.

Once Bianca’s screaming faded down the elevator shaft, David Vance stepped closer to Ethan, pulling a thick stack of court injunctions from his leather briefcase.

"Ethan Cole," David said, his voice smooth as silk and cold as ice. "As of 4:00 PM today, the New York State Supreme Court has issued an emergency freeze on all personal and corporate assets associated with Cole Enterprises, Vance Holdings, and your private offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands and Liechtenstein."

Ethan staggered back, his knees buckling, forcing him to lean heavily against the glass wall to keep from falling. "An... an emergency freeze? On what grounds?!"

"On the grounds of systematic corporate embezzlement, grand larceny, and document forgery," David replied, handing him the legal notice. "And effective immediately, Ms. Claire Bennett has filed a formal petition to assume controlling interest of Cole Enterprises as the primary managing partner and legal holder of the foundational patents."

Ethan’s head snapped up, his bloodshot eyes locking onto mine with absolute, frantic disbelief. "The foundational patents...? What are you talking about?! I own those patents! I registered Cole Enterprises six years ago!"

I leaned close to the glass wall, looking straight into the eyes of the man who had tried to erase me from existence.

"You registered the company, Ethan," I whispered, every word dropping like a lead weight onto his chest. "But you forgot to read the fine print of the original founding charter we signed in our small apartment ten years ago. You thought you were signing a standard spousal agreement. But what I actually drafted was an irrevocable Intellectual Property Trust."

Ethan’s mouth gaped open, his breath hitching in his throat.

"Every line of code, every automated trading algorithm, every predictive financial model that Cole Enterprises uses to manage twelve billion dollars in client assets belongs exclusively to the Bennett IP Trust," I revealed. "And guess who the sole trustee is, Ethan? Me. Which means as of five minutes ago, you don't even have permission to log into your own office building."
