Chapter 7 - The Hidden Flash Drive

Word Count: 1052

Upstairs in Ava’s room, the soft, ambient night-light cast a warm, comforting glow over the walls painted with soft pastel stars. Ava was fast asleep in her small white bed, clutching her cashmere wrap tightly against her chest, entirely oblivious to the federal agents marching through the hallways below.

Natalie sat quietly in the rocking chair beside the bed, her fingers trembling as she pulled her phone from her pocket. She needed answers, and she needed them now.

Without hesitation, she dialed Mr. Vance’s direct corporate office number—the same number she had used countless times during her father's business ventures.

The phone rang twice before a smooth, calm voice answered on the other end.

"Miss Elena," Mr. Vance greeted her calmly, as if he were answering a routine legal inquiry at 2:00 PM instead of assisting a federal raid at midnight. "Or should I call you Natalie now that you're hiding out in a syndicate boss's mansion?"

Natalie gasped quietly, pressing her back against the rocking chair. "Mr. Vance... what are you doing here? Why are you assisting a federal raid on Damian DeLuca's estate?"

A dry, humorless chuckle came through the earpiece. "My dear, corporate law and federal investigations often overlap in fascinating ways. Did you really think your family's holding trust only dealt with retail real estate and failed marriages? Horizon Holding Trust has major financial stakes in Chicago logistics—the very same logistics routes Damian DeLuca currently controls through intimidation and violence."

Natalie’s breath caught in her throat. "You're working with the federal government to take down Damian."

"We are aligning our assets with the winning side," Mr. Vance corrected smoothly. "Moreau is unstable, but DeLuca is a liability to our long-term commercial expansion in the Midwest. The federal government needed an inside track on DeLuca's shipping manifests and offshore accounts. And who better to provide the legal leverage than the family firm that helped finance his initial warehouse acquisitions three years ago?"

The pieces of the puzzle clicked together with terrifying clarity. The fourteen-hour marriage, the sudden foreclosure on Julian's estate, the corporate takeover of Bellamy & Stone, and now the federal raid on Damian's home—it was all part of a massive, calculated corporate and criminal chessboard, and Natalie had unknowingly been a pawn moved right into the center of the board.

"You used me," Natalie whispered, her voice shaking with anger. "You knew I would help Ava. You knew Damian would hire me."

"I knew that your intuition and genuine empathy made you the perfect candidate to infiltrate the inner circle of a man who trusts no one," Mr. Vance replied coldly. "And now, Natalie, you can do something truly useful for your family's legacy. Somewhere inside that estate, Damian keeps a master encrypted flash drive containing the financial ledgers of his entire operation. Find it. Hand it over to the federal agents downstairs, and your family's financial security—debts, tuition, and future—will be permanently guaranteed."

"And if I refuse?" Natalie challenged, her jaw tightening.

"If you refuse, you remain trapped inside a sinking ship when federal prosecutors indict Damian DeLuca for racketeering, money laundering, and conspiracy," Mr. Vance warned calmly. "Think about your sister Grace. Think about your mother's memory. Don't throw your life away protecting a criminal."

The line went dead.

Natalie sat frozen in the rocking chair, the phone glowing dimly in her hand. She was trapped between two ruthless worlds: her family's cold, calculating corporate empire represented by Mr. Vance, and Damian DeLuca's violent, protective syndicate world where she had finally found a sense of genuine purpose protecting a terrified little girl.

Suddenly, a heavy, urgent knock echoed at Ava's bedroom door.

Natalie jumped, her heart leaping into her throat. She slid the phone into her pocket and stood up slowly, her muscles tensing.

"Ms. Carter?" a gruff, unfamiliar voice called out from the hallway. "Federal agents. Open the door."

Natalie swallowed hard. She glanced at Ava, who stirred slightly in her sleep but didn't wake up. If she opened the door, the federal agents would search the room, and if they found anything—or if they questioned her connection to the DeLuca family—everything would collapse.

"Just a moment!" Natalie called out, her voice trembling slightly.

She needed to buy time. She looked around the room, her eyes landing on the bookshelf near Ava's toy chest. Behind a row of children's fairy tales sat a small, locked wooden keepsake box that Damian had given Ava on her birthday.

Could the master encrypted flash drive be inside?

Natalie rushed across the room, ignoring the second, louder knock at the door, and dropped to her knees beside the shelf. She grabbed the wooden box. It didn't have a traditional keyhole; it had a numeric combination lock set to Ava's favorite mathematical sequence—the Fibonacci numbers that Ava constantly tapped out during her sensory exercises.

1 - 1 - 2 - 3 - 5...

With shaking fingers, Natalie dialed the numbers into the brass dial.

The lid popped open. Inside, resting on a bed of blue velvet, wasn't just a child's trinket. It was a matte-black encrypted USB flash drive, stamped with the exact same faint crest as the business card Damian had handed her at Bellamy & Stone.

The door handle to Ava's room began to turn.
