Chapter 6 - The Federal Warrant

Word Count: 1049

The sharp, synchronized glare of police flashers painted the grand limestone facade of the DeLuca estate in alternating flashes of harsh red and blue. Sirens wailed into the cool night air, shattering the serene suburban silence as half a dozen marked Chicago Police cruisers and black federal Homeland Security SUVs blocked every exit of the long, winding driveway.

Inside the main foyer, the heavy double doors stood wide open. Standing upon the polished marble floor was Assistant U.S. Attorney Thomas Vance—a sharply dressed, ambitious federal prosecutor known in the Chicago media as a relentless crusader against organized crime—flanked by a dozen armed federal agents in tactical gear.

Damian descended the grand staircase with deliberate, unhurried steps, his expression an impenetrable mask of cold, corporate calm. Natalie followed closely behind him, her heart pounding as she watched the federal agents fan out across the house, securing exits and demanding compliance from the estate staff.

"Mr. DeLuca," Assistant U.S. Attorney Vance greeted him with a tight, humorless smile, holding up an official-looking document stamped by a federal judge. "It appears we meet under less-than-ideal circumstances. I have a federal search and seizure warrant for this property, authorizing us to inspect all commercial and residential structures for illicit contraband, unregistered firearms, and financial records tied to the syndicate."

Damian stopped at the bottom of the stairs, his hands resting casually in his trouser pockets. He didn't flinch, nor did he raise his voice.

"Good evening, Counselor," Damian replied smoothly, his deep voice carrying an effortless authority that made several of the younger federal agents shift uncomfortably. "You're welcome to search every square inch of this house. You'll find plenty of legal briefs, tax documents, and perhaps a few antique hunting rifles locked in the armory with proper permits. But if you think you'll find anything tying my legitimate transport and logistics empire to your career-building conspiracy theories, you're going to be terribly disappointed."

Vance’s smile vanished, replaced by a sharp, predatory glint. "We'll see about that, DeLuca. Word on the street is your primary rival, Moreau, has been stepping on your toes, and your warehouses are buzzing with illegal freight. Sooner or later, your house of cards is going to collapse."

While Damian and the federal prosecutor engaged in their psychological chess match, Natalie’s eyes scanned the perimeter of the foyer. Her gaze locked onto a familiar figure standing near the open doorway, holding a clipboard and talking quietly with a senior federal agent.

It was Mr. Vance—the corporate lawyer who had represented my family's holding trust during the disastrous fourteen-hour marriage corporate takeover.

Natalie’s breath hitched. Mr. Vance? What is our family's corporate lawyer doing assisting a federal raid on the DeLuca estate?

Before Natalie could process the staggering coincidence, Mr. Vance turned his head, his cold, professional eyes locking directly onto hers across the crowded foyer. He didn't look surprised to see her standing there beside Damian DeLuca. In fact, a subtle, knowing smirk crossed his lips before he quickly turned his attention back to the federal agent.

A chilling wave of realization washed over Natalie. The corporate restructuring of Bellamy & Stone, the sudden acquisition of the mortgage debt, the federal investigation into Damian's transport empire—none of this was random. It was all connected by a much larger, invisible web of corporate espionage and underworld warfare.

"Ms. Carter?"

Damian’s voice pulled Natalie back to reality. She blinked, realizing that Damian was looking at her, his dark eyes narrowing slightly as he noticed her pale, shaken expression.

"Are you alright?" Damian asked quietly, stepping closer to shield her from the view of the federal agents.

"I... I'm fine," Natalie whispered, her mind racing a mile a minute. She couldn't tell him right now about Mr. Vance, not with federal agents swarming the house and listening to every word. "Just... a lot of flashing lights."

Damian nodded slowly, placing a protective hand briefly against her shoulder before turning his attention back to the federal prosecutor.

"Search the estate thoroughly, Counselor," Damian challenged coldly. "And make sure your men don't break any of my mother's porcelain while you're tearing through my home. Because if anything is damaged without a valid evidentiary reason, my legal team will sue the Department of Justice into bankruptcy before sunrise."

Vance scowled, turning on his heel and barking orders at the search teams. "Clear the upper levels! Check the library and the private study! I want every hard drive imaged!"

As the federal agents fanned out across the mansion, Damian leaned down slightly, speaking directly into Natalie's ear so only she could hear.

"Go upstairs to Ava's room," Damian instructed firmly, his voice dropping into a low, urgent register. "Lock the door from the inside and stay with her. No matter what you hear or who knocks, do not open it unless you hear my voice."

"What are you going to do?" Natalie asked, her eyes searching his face.

May you like

"I'm going to ensure our federal guests don't find anything they aren't legally authorized to see," Damian said with a dangerous, chilling smile. "Go, Natalie."

Natalie turned and hurried up the sweeping staircase, her mind consumed by the terrifying vision of Mr. Vance standing alongside federal agents in the foyer below. Her family’s corporate world—the very world she thought she had left behind when she walked out on her fraudulent marriage—was colliding head-on with Damian DeLuca’s criminal empire. And she was standing right at ground zero.
