Chapter 4 - The Fire Ax Intercept-4

The air inside the concrete terminal vault grew rapidly hot, thick, smelling of ozone, dry dust, and the sharp chemical tang of short-circuiting electrical lines. The emergency lighting system had kicked in, painting the white masonry and the long rows of server racks in a dim, pulsing amber glow that throbbed like the heartbeat of a dying monster.
Charles stood caught between a terrifying choice. If he allowed Marcus Chen to finish the master data purge, he gave the syndicate that had systematically destroyed his marriage and poisoned his wife's heart the ultimate financial victory. If he ordered Detective Miller’s tactical operators to fire, Marcus would detonate the lithium battery core, cutting the electrical power to the third-floor maternity critical care unit where Evelyn and his newborn son Rowan were currently fighting for survival on a low-trickle feed.
"The power grid doesn't rely on your state committees, Marcus," Charles said, his voice dropping into a freezing, clinical baritone that carried the absolute weight of his newly awakened protective instinct.
He took a slow, measured step forward, his gray eyes locking onto his CFO’s face with a profound, unblinking clarity that stripped away any trace of human hesitation. He didn't look at the gun; his gaze traveled past Marcus's shoulder toward the secondary structural pylon adjacent to the vault door frame—where a heavy, long-handled steel fire ax was mounted inside a red glass security case.
With a raw, desperate roar of pure fatherly fury, Charles didn't lung toward the keyboard; he hurled his body weight to the right, smashed his elbow through the glass security case, and ripped the heavy iron ax from its mounting brackets before the private security guards outside could even clear their holsters.
"Charles! Stop!" Marcus shrieked, his voice cracking into a high-pitched, desperate wail of pure panic as he saw the steel blade rise above Charles's shoulders. "If you hit that transformer column, you’ll drop the voltage across the entire east wing! The medical monitors will fail!"
"The east wing has an independent, non-networked federal maritime emergency generator circuit that my father designed twenty years ago, Marcus," Charles whispered, his teeth clenched so hard his jaw muscles pulsed violently beneath his skin. "The only network that is about to go dark tonight... is yours."
He slammed the heavy steel blade of the ax directly into the center of the vault's high-voltage electrical transformer box.
CRASH-BOOM.
The iron casing disintegrated in a brilliant explosion of high-voltage electrical arc fire that hissed violently as the standing condensation water on the floorboards flooded the exposed circuits. A massive cloud of acrid gray smoke and burning copper wiring flooded the server vault, short-circuiting the main three-phase industrial power line running into the warehouse grid.

The automatic carbine fired a wild, uncontrolled three-round burst into the concrete ceiling panels as Marcus Chen was thrown backward by the sheer concussive force of the electrical blast, his weapon flying from his hands and spinning off into the dark recesses of the drainage trench below.
The entire subterranean sub-level was plunged into a sudden, dead silence, the high-density server mainframes grinding to a dead halt as the progress bar for the master database wipe froze dead at 19.8%. The text overlay blinked twice, turned a pale, mechanical amber, and the heavy pneumatic locking bolts of the circular steel vault door clicked open with a soft sigh of compressed air.
