Chapter 2 - The Nicosia Proxy-2

The old, windowless consultation room on the third floor of St. Aurelia’s looked less like a medical alcove and more like a high-security tactical bunker. The air conditioning was turned up to an icy frequency that made Charles’s shoulders tensed beneath his tailored blazer jacket, the smell of institutional bleach and cold espresso thick in the humid air.

Senior Special Agent Harris from the FBI’s Financial Crimes and Public Corruption Division sat on the opposite side of the small particle-board table. She was a sharp woman in a tailored dark navy coat, her gold federal badge glinting beneath the harsh glare of the overhead fluorescent lamps, a thick leather folder clutched under her arm.

"Mr. Burden," Agent Harris said, her voice a hard, unyielding baritone that stripped away any remaining trace of corporate pretense. She slid a digital tablet across the mahogany table surface. "Our cyber unit just finalized the master data extraction loop on the Pan-Atlantic Holdings servers—the offshore shell firm based out of Nicosia, Cyprus, that your real estate group has been utilizing for the riverfront development project."

Charles sat down slowly on the metal stool, his hands flat against the table. "What does a Cypriot money laundering pipeline have to do with my ex-wife’s cardiac failure, Agent Harris?"

"Everything, Charles," Harris corrected ruthlessly, her fingers tapping the screen to bring up a rapid, scrolling line of cryptographic ledger files. "Six months ago, when you authorized the initial escrow routing sequence for the downtown high-rise acquisitions, your firm's secondary signature token was used to validate an international asset disclaimer. The document claimed that Evelyn Burden had legally waived her elective shares to the Vanguard Group's maritime infrastructure fund in exchange for a private cash settlement."

She paused, her eyes locking onto Charles’s pale face with a freezing, clinical clarity.

"The signature on that disclaimer is a flawless digital forgery, executed under a localized hardware clone of your personal administrative key. But the real problem is the source of the capital that funded the transfer. The eighty-five million dollars siphoned into that Nicosia vault didn't come from your development profits, Charles. It was siphoned directly from the legacy trust fund your late father established for Evelyn’s ancestral family estate in the Oakhill district."

The world seemed to lose all its heat, the ambient noise of the hospital corridors outside completely vanishing into a dark, suffocating void. His father had been a senior structural engineer who had spent forty years building the city's marine terminals alongside Evelyn’s grandfather; he had left her that trust fund as a permanent safety repository before his passing.

"The forgery was executed from an IP address routed straight out of the private residence of Sienna Voss," Agent Harris whispered, her dark eyes filled with a grim finality. "She wasn't just your mistress, Charles. She’s the primary corporate trustee for the Eastern European syndicate that has been trying to execute a hostile takeover of your logistics network for two years. She used your affair, your isolation, and your absolute self-absorbed blindness to turn your company into the ultimate money laundering filter. And Evelyn... Evelyn discovered the pipeline three weeks ago."
