Chapter 5 - The Ghost Corporate Office-5

The corporate headquarters of the Vanguard Group occupied the top three floors of a sleek, glass-and-steel skyscraper that towered over the financial district of Silver Valley. On a normal Friday afternoon, the building would be a hive of activity, filled with hundreds of analysts, traders, and executives rushing to finalize end-of-week transactions.
But today was different. Because of the multi-billion-dollar European merger, I had ordered a partial security lockdown of our specific wing to prevent any premature data leaks before Monday's formal announcement. The executive floor was eerily quiet, the long corridors of brushed aluminum and frosted glass completely deserted.
I stepped out of the private elevator at 4:15 p.m. Agent Vance was right behind me, her hand resting flat against the grip of her concealed service weapon beneath her trench coat. Two tactical officers disguised as building maintenance workers had taken up positions in the maintenance stairwell just twenty feet away.
The air conditioning hummed a low, monotonous tune that amplified the tension in my chest. Every shadow cast by the modern minimalist sculptures in the hallway looked like a threat.
"The main executive safe is inside my private office at the end of the hall," I murmured to Vance, my voice echoing slightly off the polished granite floors. "If she’s here, she’s either inside or waiting in the adjacent boardroom."
"Keep your eyes up, Arthur," Vance warned in a hushed tone. "A woman who can systematically abuse a child and execute a multi-million-dollar international fraud scheme doesn't hesitate to pull a trigger if she feels cornered. She’s a cornered predator right now."
We walked slowly toward the heavy mahogany double doors of my office suite. The electronic lock was glowing green.
Someone had already bypassed it.
I pushed the doors open. The office was vast, featuring floor-to-ceiling windows that offered a panoramic view of the storm-swept city below. The sky outside was a dark, bruised purple, heavy with rolling thunderclouds.
Sitting in my high-backed leather executive chair, her silhouette framed by the dramatic, lightning-lit skyline, was Lauren.
She looked absolutely immaculate. She was wearing a tailored cream-colored pantsuit, her blonde hair pulled back into a flawless chignon, not a single strand out of place. On the glass desk in front of her sat an open bottle of my most expensive Scotch and a sleek, carbon-fiber briefcase.
"You're late, Arthur," she said, spinning the chair slowly to face us. Her face was a mask of cold, beautiful serenity. Then her eyes shifted to Agent Vance, and a small, amused smile touched her lips. "And I see you brought a friend from the State Police. Detective Vance, isn't it? Or should I say, Special Agent? I must admit, your brother-in-law at the hospital is a much better conversationalcore than you are."
"It’s over, Rachel," Vance said, stepping forward, her hand moving to draw her weapon. "The perimeter is secure. The tactical teams are in the lobby. There is no way out of this building for you."
"Oh, please," Lauren scoffed, standing up gracefully. She picked up a small digital device from the desk—a remote detonator with a glowing LED screen. "Do you think I didn't anticipate you tracing the call? Do you think I didn't plan for the eventuality of Arthur breaking down and confessing to the authorities?"
She walked around the desk, her high heels clicking sharply against the floorboards.
"Let’s talk about the infrastructure of this building. Vanguard Plaza utilizes a state-of-the-art automated gaseous fire suppression system in its server rooms—specifically, an Inergen gas mixture designed to extinguish electrical fires by rapidly displacing oxygen. If I press this button, the emergency isolation valves for the entire top three floors will trigger. The vents will seal, and the room will fill with Inergen. Within ninety seconds, the oxygen levels will drop below ten percent. You will both be unconscious in two minutes. Dead in five."
Agent Vance froze, her weapon half-drawn. "You're bluffing. You wouldn't kill yourself just to escape."
"I wouldn't kill myself, no," Lauren smiled, tapping her ear. I noticed a tiny, flesh-colored wireless earpiece nestled inside. "Because I’m wearing an oxygenated micro-respirator hidden beneath my collar. And more importantly, I don't need to escape through the lobby."
She turned her gaze to me, her blue eyes colder than the Arctic ice. "Arthur, open the safe. Now. The bearer bonds are worth twelve million dollars in untraceable international tenders. Give them to me, and I will manually enter the abort code for the Vanguard Group wire transfer. If you don't, I press this button, you both suffocate, the eighty-five million moves to my offshore account at 5:00 p.m., and I use the private helicopter currently waiting for me on the roof helipad."
"The helipad is locked," I said through gritted teeth, my fists clenching so hard my nails bit into my palms.
"Not when you have the access codes of the Senior Vice President," she countered, tossing a printed document onto the desk. "I downloaded your master security profile months ago. Now, open the safe. We have precisely six minutes before the automatic wire script locks down and becomes irreversible."
I stood there, caught between a terrifying choice. If I opened the safe, I gave the woman who tortured my daughter the ultimate financial victory and a clean escape. If I refused, she would asphyxiate us, ruin my company, frame me for corporate theft, and leave Grace entirely alone in a world full of monsters.
"Arthur, don't do it," Agent Vance said, her eyes locked on Lauren's detonator hand. "She’s going to press it anyway. It’s her pattern. She eliminates the witnesses."

"Tick-tock, Arthur," Lauren whispered, her thumb hovering over the red button. "Think about Grace. Think about what happens to her if you die a disgraced criminal."
I took a deep breath, stepped toward the painting on the wall that concealed the biometric safe, and placed my trembling thumb against the digital scanner.
