Chapter 4 - The Final Clause-4

"You are a monster," I whispered into the phone, my knuckles turning white as I gripped the device. "If you ever come near my daughter again, I will kill you myself. Do you hear me? I will tear you apart."

"Oh, Arthur. Let’s avoid the melodrama, shall we? It doesn't suit a man of your corporate stature," Lauren’s voice was cool, crisp, and entirely unbothered, sounding exactly like she did when she was coordinating a catering menu. "Besides, we both know you don't have the stomach for violence. You’re a man of numbers. A man of contracts. Which is exactly why we need to talk about our contract."

Agent Vance was hovering over my shoulder, staring at her laptop screen as the tracking software attempted to ping the cellular tower Lauren was routing her call through. She gave me a signal—three fingers up. Thirty seconds left.

"What contract, Lauren? You cleared out my accounts. You took four hundred thousand dollars. Take it and run to whatever hole you crawled out of," I demanded, trying to keep her talking.

"Four hundred thousand? Please, Arthur. That was just walking-around money," she laughed, the sound sending a violent shiver down my spine. "Do you really think I spent three years playing the doting housewife and managing your miserable, grieving household for a measly six-figure payout? I told you in the note: you should have looked closer."

"What did you do?"

"I’ve been the sole administrator of your personal and professional digital signatures for the last twelve months, darling. You were so grateful that I 'handled the bills' and 'managed the digital clutter.' You never did notice the shell companies I established in the Cayman Islands under the Vanguard Group’s subsidiary umbrella, did you?"

My heart plummeted into a bottomless, icy void. The Vanguard Group. The cross-border merger I had spent the last fourteen months finalizing. It was a twelve-billion-dollar acquisition of a European tech conglomerate. As the Senior VP, I had total authorization over the initial escrow wire transfers.

"You didn't," I gasped.

"Oh, but I did," Lauren purred. "I initiated the preliminary capital transfer of eighty-five million dollars into an escrow account held by 'Vanguard Global Holdings'—a company that belongs entirely to me. The final authorization code is scheduled to execute automatically at 5:00 p.m. today. Your digital token is already embedded in the protocol."

I looked at the clock on the hospital wall. It was 3:42 p.m. We had less than an hour and a half.

"If that money moves, the SEC will shut down the company within an hour," I said, my voice cracking. "I’ll be arrested for corporate embezzlement. They’ll think I was in on it with you!"

"Exactly," Lauren said, her tone dripping with sadistic satisfaction. "They’ll think you used your daughter's 'accidental' injury as a distraction to execute the largest corporate heist of the decade and flee the country. You’ll spend the next thirty years in a federal penitentiary, Arthur. And do you know what happens to Grace then? She becomes a ward of the state. She goes into the foster system. And as her loving stepmother, who was never formally charged with a crime before she vanished... well, I might just have to come back and adopt her all over any time I want."

"You sick, twisted bitch!" I screamed, completely forgetting about the need to remain calm for the tracker.

"Keep your voice down, Arthur. You’ll wake the child," she said coldly. "Here is my offer. I will cancel the automatic transfer script. I will release the eighty-five million back to Vanguard, and I will vanish from your lives forever. But it will cost you. I want the deed to the Aspen estate, the physical bearer bonds locked in your private safe at the Manhattan office, and I want you to sign a document stating that Grace's injuries were entirely accidental, witnessed by you."

"I will never sign that," I growled.

"Then enjoy federal prison, Arthur. You have until 4:45 p.m. to text me the confirmation of the bond transfer from your office safe. If I don't receive it, the wire executes, and your life ends. Goodbye, darling."

The line went dead.

I dropped the phone onto the floor, my breath coming in ragged, desperate gasps. I turned to Agent Vance. "Did you get it? Did you trace the call?"

Vance slammed her laptop shut, her expression grim. "She’s using a sophisticated military-grade VPN and a burner satellite array. The signal pinged off three different towers simultaneously—one in Chicago, one in Miami, and one just three miles from here in downtown Silver Valley. She’s spoofing the location, Arthur. We can’t pinpoint her based on the call."

"She’s close," I said, a sudden realization washing over me. "She said I have until 4:45 to transfer the bearer bonds from my office safe. My private office is in downtown Silver Valley, on the top floor of the Vanguard Plaza building. The safe she’s talking about... it requires a biometric thumbprint and a physical key. She doesn't have my thumbprint. She needs me to physically be there to open it."

"It’s a trap," Agent Vance said, stepping between me and the door. "She wants to draw you out of the hospital. She wants you at that office. If she gets those bearer bonds and you open that safe, she has everything she needs to frame you perfectly before she executes the wire anyway."

"I don't care about the money! I don't care about the company!" I shouted, pointing a trembling finger at Grace’s bed. "She threatened my daughter! She said she would come back for her! If I don't stop this wire, I go to prison, and Grace is left entirely unprotected. I have to go to the office."

"You aren't going alone," Vance said, her eyes flashing with a dangerous resolve. "Miller, call the SWAT unit and have them deploy to the Vanguard Plaza. We’re going to give Mrs. Callahan exactly what she wants. A face-to-face meeting with her husband."

I walked over to Grace, kneeling one last time. She was looking at me, her eyes wide with fear, having heard everything.

"Daddy has to go fix something, Grace," I said, kissing her forehead gently. "But I have the police here, and I will be back before you know it. Trust me."

"Don't let her win, Daddy," Grace whispered, her small voice suddenly carrying a fierce, unexpected spark of strength. "Don't let her hurt anyone else."
